Tough loss for Steve - 3-6 7-6 7-5. He served for the match in the 2nd and had a 5-2 lead in the 3rd.

Thiem is going places fast. Not a bad loss for Johnson on clay

The nimrods at the other forum I go to are calling Johnson's loss one of the top chokes they've ever seen

Right. No one in sports ever makes a comeback by making good plays. The other team, or player, chokes. It is always a negative story. Thiem did not play well; Johnson choked. Got it.

Chase Buchanan has reached the quarters at the Karshi challenger though he is the 5 seed so I suppose that was expected.

Saketh Myneni and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan make the quarters as well.

I asked before, did you play tennis at Ole Miss or play college tennis in the states?

Yannick Maden owned Mies in college. Was a nightmare matchup for Mies.

Lot of current and former college guys playing in Tulsa and Buffalo this week. Jarmere Jenkins is the #1 seed in the Tulsa qualies despite being ranked 236 so he must have forgot to register for the tournament and had to go through qualies for the late entry.

Buffalo main draw has Nathan Pasha (UGA), Herkko Pollanen & Connor Smith (Ohio St), Mitchell Frank & Ryan Shane & Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (UVA), Henrique Cunha (Duke), Jason Tahir (Duke), Daniel Nguyen (USC), Jean-Yves Aubone (Florida St). The qualifying draw has a few guys that have made it to the final round - Alex Lacroix (Florida), Luca Corinteli (UVA) will face Chris Diaz (Ohio St), Hunter Harrington (Clemson), Matt Kandath (Stanford), Chris Mengel (Duke), and Ralf Steinbach (Ohio St) will face Aidan Talcott (Denver).

Tulsa has Eric Quigley looking like he may be the 8 seed, nice to see he is still trying to make it, currently 574 in the world. Brayden Schnur of UNC is 5 on the acceptance list. I then saw the name Saxon Buehning in the quals and a little research shows he plays at Alabama and is the son of Fritz Buehning, a John McEnroe partner of old.

It's odd that there are 2 US Futures this week - didn't Tulsa used to a Challenger?

Any way, it looks like Brayden Schnur, Andrew Harris, Mackenzie McDonald, Alex Sarkissian, Connor Farren, and Dane Webb should all be in the main draw.

Jarmere Jenkins, Ray Sarmiento, Ian Dempster & Nick Horton (NC St), Brady Bohrnstedt (Ok St), Drew Lied (Mich St), Nick Papac (OU), Austin Smith (UGA), Cale Hammond (Duke), Farris Gosea & Aron Hiltzik (ILL), and Tam Trinh (LSU) are all still alive in the qualifying draw.

Not odd in the sense that theyve had two Futures a week this time of year for the past few yrs, East Coast clay, *******/West Coast hardcourts. Pretty sure the Futures used to be in Sacramento and maybe Bakersfield this time of year in the past.

Tulsa used to have a fall Challenger after the US Open. Guess that changed.

I went back and looked at the USA Future's schedule over the last 2 years and there has never been 2 Future's Tournaments in the United States in the same week like there is this week in Buffalo and Tulsa.

Not sure why. I do know that Oklahoma City that was scheduled for early spring was canceled back then and move to this summer. Without even looking at the ITF schedule, my guess is that has something to do with it.

Nice win today for Nathan Pasha over #576 Luke Bambridge 6-7 6-2 6-2. Next up he'll play Connor Smith (FSU/Ohio State) in the quarters.
Ryan Shane went down to former FSU #1 Jean-Yves Aubone 6-4 6-4.
Jason Tahir beat #627 Pavel Krainik 6-3 6-2 to advance to the quarters where he'll face #431 Ashley Hewitt.
Mitchell Frank up early 2-0 on #1167 Marcus Fugate.

Mitchell Frank handled Fugate pretty easily 6-2, 6-1. He'll play Daniel Nguyen tomorrow and what should be quite a battle.

    Tulsa Future:

Mackenzie McDonald beat former Texas #1 Dimitar Kutrovsky 7-5 6-4 to advance to the semis where he'll face Jared Donaldson who beat #375 Sanam Singh (UVA) 6-2 7-5.
Ray Sarmiento went down to 17 year old Ernesto Escobedo 7-5 6-3. Had Sarmiento won he would have faced for UVA #1 Jarmere Jenkins who beat former Illinois #1 Dennis Nevolo 7-5 7-5.

    Buffalo Future:
Nathan Pasha leads Connor Smith 7-5 4-2
Daniel Nguyen leads Mitchell Frank 7-5 1-0
    Jason Tahir plays later

Nguyen ended up handling Frank rather easily 7-5, 6-1
This and Ashley Hewitt have just split and are headed to a 3rd. Depending on this result, the semis will have at least 3 of the 4 players who are either currently in college or just finished. Doubles have a ex collegiate team as well. College tennis make another positive statement.

Good showing for Pasha, but would have been awesome to see him hold on against Cunha. He's got a new stick (Blade 98 instead of Pure Drive), which I normally wouldn't put too much stock in, but it may actually be doing something positive for his game.

cunha 396 in latest rankings, could move up a bit more though he has some good futures results to defend from summer of last year

might be seeing him in a lot more challengers main draws soon - excited to see how he stacks up at the next level

    Blanket statement.

Maybe maybe not. Rola played the defending champ from England, at Wimbledon on ct. 1. Quote from Rola Monday after he won his first round, "I just hope I don't poop my pants".

Tim Puetz who recently played at Auburn, has never played a main draw ATP match (I could be wrong) beat Gabishvilli in the first round. Now he just lost to Fognini in 4 sets. I'd put Fognini in a top tier compared to college players.

Match ups and a number of factors play into how college or former college player will outcome against a pro, top tier or not.
