Quiroz beats Cunha again - this time 6-4 6-4
@tenniscp I agree. I think it will be a Nguyen/Frank finals. Nguyen beat Frank in straight sets a couple of weeks ago in Buffalo and although it looks like Frank has been playing really good ball lately, my money is on DNguyen to win the tourney.
Just checked live scoreboard and Frank did indeed beat Schneider 0,5. Nguyen down a set but serving for second against Bambridge. I also saw the Frank-Nguyen match in Buffalo. Frank was serving for set, faltered and then played very erratic after that.
It will be Frank vs. Nguyen in the finals with Nguyen beating Bambridge 4-6 6-4 6-4.
ATP 500 - Washington DC Qualies:
aTm recruit Jordi Arconada got a gift win over Michael Llodra when Llodra retired down 3-2 in the 1st - next up will be the winner of the Ryan Shane/Alex Kuznetsov match with the winner qualifying for the main draw.
$100K Vancouver Challenger - Qualies
Brayden Schnur beat #900 Mico Santiago 6-3 6-1 and will next face former Michigan #1 Evan King.
USA Future Decatur IL - Qualies
Lots of guys in qualies couple of interesting R64 matches are George Goldhoff vs. Hunter Callahan, Chris Diaz vs. Andrew Korinek, and new UT Vol Jack Schipanski vs. old Vol Jarryd Chaplin
frustrating to see his chance for good chunks of points get halted by the same guy twice in a row - keep working at it, Cunha!
Tough day for Ryan Shane against Alex Kuznetsov in DC qualies - 9 doubles faults, 33% 1st serve %, and won just 10 of 40 return points - lost 6-2 6-1.
Roberto Quiroz won the hardcourt $15K Future in Venezuela with a 6-3 6-4 win in the finals over #714 Jorge Panta.
About 35 people at the Frank/Nguyen match - I made the 45 minute drive over to watch it.
I went to the tournament last year, for a juco campus the tennis facilities are very good
It is very nice - covered seating coming in handy with the sun shining. Frank up a double break and serving up 3-0. Nguyen struggling at the net missing several low volleys and the majority of points have ended with a Nguyen miss. Frank being his usual steady self but his 1st serve with some nice pop.
Nguyen gets 1 of the breaks back - combo of Frank not getting enough 1st serves in and Daniel finally keeping his shots in play. Quick love hold too so Frank will serve up 4-3 after leading 4-0.
Frank breaks to take the 1st set 6-3. Nguyen left a drop shot short and took one out of the air instead of letting it bounce and hit it long. Very humid with Mitchell already on his 3rd shirt.
@topdawg Please keep the updates coming.
Nguyen breaks to start the 2nd set - he hit a nice drop shot on deuce and a nasty back hand slice on break point that bit into the court and just died. Mitchell lunged for it and came down hard on his right side and was grabbing his hip for a few minutes. Nguyen consolidates the break with a hold at 40-15.
Frank comes back from 15-30 down on his serve to hold for 1-2. Nguyen has picked his game up a good bit and is finding some nice depth.
Nguyen holds at 40-15 for a 3-1 lead then breaks at 30-40 for a double break 4-1 lead. Mitchell missing more frequently and Nguyen pounding his forehand and hitting some sharp angles too.
Both with easy holds in less than a minute - Nguyen now serving for the 2nd set up 5-2
Nguyen comes back from 15-40 down and holds to take the 2nd set 6-2. 3rd set to decide it - Nguyen playing a good bit better than Mitchell right now it'll be interesting to see if Mitchell can turn it around
In the 1st set most points ended on a Nguyen unforced error; in the 2nd set most ended with either a Nguyen winner or shot that was placed too well for Mitchell to put back in play. Mitchell had some success on the Nguyen 2nd serve when he took it a few feet inside the baseline - we'll see if he tries that more in the 3rd.
Nguyen breaks at love to go up 1-0 in the 3rd. He was painting the line on just about every shot.
Sounds like a great final
It has been a good one. D-win has really upped his game since that bad 1st set.
Frank was serving 0-2 30-40 2nd serve but came back to hold. Nguyen now to serve up 2-1.
Mitchell has had 2 break points on this serve game but Nguyen has fought both off. Now a 3rd break point coming up
Break point #4 for Mitchell erased by a Nguyen winner down the line. Mitchell getting punished when he leaves the return short.
Nguyen fights off 4 break points and holds for 3-1 in an almost 15 minute service game.
After a quick Frank hold Nguyen throws in 2 doubles and Mitchell breaks for 3-3
Now Mitchell is the one hitting lines - 3 straight winners followed up by a Nguyen miss at the net and now Nguyen will serve 3-4
15-40 Mitchell - Nguyen struggling with his serve
Nguyen got it back to deuce but just dumped a drip shot in the net - break point
Nguyen with a forehand winner followed by an unforced error - break point again
Mitchell passes Nguyen with a winner down the line and will serve for it up 5-3
Break point Nguyen
Mitchell was up 30-0 and lost 4 straight points to get broke - he doubled on break point.
Nguyen serving 15-40
Back to deuce - Nguyen a little serve and volley
Nguyen hits a nice drop shot for the ad then hits a big serve out wide for the hold 5-5.
Mitchell holds for 6-5. Went up 40-0 then Nguyen got it back to deuce before Mitchell gutted it out.
Tiebreak for the match - Nguyen has won at least 15 points with a drop shot.
Nguyen wide on a forehand - will serve 0-1
Nguyen goes for the dropper and Mitchell drops back - 2-0 Frank
Nguyen lands the drop this time to make it 1-2 then hits a lob winner for 2-2
Frank long on a forehand - Nguyen to serve up 3-2
Nguyen with a bad dropper but Frank over hits it and it sails long - 4-2 Nguyen
5-2 Nguyen - nice 1st serve not returned
Frank doubles and then Nguyen hits a forehand winner to take it 7-2
Very enjoyable match to watch at a super venue.
