Draw for Canada vs Spain is out:

    Event Representing Canada Representing Spain
1st Singles Rubber – Friday, February 1, 1:00 p.m. PT Milos Raonic Albert Ramos
2nd Singles Rubber – Friday, February 1 Frank Dancevic Marcel Granollers
Doubles Rubber – Saturday, February 2, 1:00 p.m. PT Daniel Nestor/Vasek Pospisil Marcel Granollers/Marc Lopez
3rd Singles Rubber – Sunday, February 3, 11:00 a.m. PT Milos Raonic Marcel Granollers
4th Singles Rubber – Sunday, February 3 Frank Dancevic Albert Ramos

Wow, although I'm excited that Canada has a great shot to win this tie, it feels a bit cheap because Spain's top 3 players - Nadal, Ferrer and Almagro - aren't playing.

Regardless, I hope Canada seizes this opportunity. A victory in this tie, regardless of Spain's weaker roster, would still be huge.

    GO CANADA!!

It was Raonic/Pospisil that beat Nadal/Djokovic in doubles at the Rogers Cup.

Well ... to be fair, Rafa, Ferru, and Feli all said that they wouldn't be participating in DC this year, after the last tie.

And the news that Nico would be pulling out with an injury didn't hit the interwebs until early last week. I think he went further in the AO than most expected him to, and he played some hard matches.

That said, I think the doubles will be the tournament blockbuster. Kind of excited for that.

Thank you. It's been a minute -- when was that match, 2009? -- so I figured I had at least one of them wrong.

I also figured, this being TW, that someone would correct me.

Just as I suspected. I'm almost certain Canada will sub in Pospisil for Dancevic if the 5th rubber proves decisive. Smart move keeping him fresher for the doubles match and the singles tie where he'll have a much better chance of pulling off an upset....having him waste his energy in a probably hopeless match against Granollers on Day 1 would have been pretty stupid.

You mean Laaksonen? Evidently a sacrificial lamb to Berdych on the first day who will give Chiudinelli some rest for the doubles and 2nd singles tie (basically the exact same role Dancevic will play for Canada vs. Granollers). Or maybe they think #289 in the world can beat #6.

That should be quite an interesting tie....those teams both have absolutely no depth outside of their top 2 players. With each missing one of them, we could see something like a Rosol v. Chudinelli match-up as the decider.

It's too bad the Swiss are missing Fed...both him and Wawrinka could have beaten Rosol in singles and then probably won the doubles together against Berdych and whoever. Or Fed would also have a good chance against Berdych in singles of course. With their draw, they probably would have made the Semis quite handily.

You are ... really a bit of an instigator.

    1) Nico fell out with an injury a couple of days ago. It was in the news. Google is your friend.

    2) For what is perhaps the ten thousandth time, Rafa, Ferru, and Feli had said after last year's DC tournament that they would not be participating this year (Rafa said he would not participate in 2012). So this is ... not news.

    3) The Spanish team has this thing called "depth". Marcel and Marc playing together have already won 10 doubles titles, whichever combination the Canadians come up with to throw at them.

I have a lot of respect for Milos' ranking, and am excited to see him play.
But what is the matter with you?

Fed absolutely travels w/ personal security.

I remember after the 2010 AO Judy Murray blogging about how she and Andy happened to run into the Fed team in the airport and how they had bodyguards - "a different world", as she put it.

I've read of Fed having extra security when he's played DC as well.

Rafa used to travel a lot of places alone but he had to stop, I think … in part because he was causing near-riots in places like the Apple store in downtown NYC when people started to figure out who he was.

The hard courts that are being used in the Swiss v Czech tie...I've seen clay courts that are faster than this. My god.

They're fast, the problem is the high bouncing.

Rebound Ace is high bouncing but medium/slow.
If they are new & really gritty they play slower like this court.
They are playing with Wilson US Open Balls which shouldn't be too bad.
Stan didn't mind, seemed to frustrate Lukas.
He got de-Rosoled!:) (Apologies to Batz)

I still can't believe Goffin lost, he was completely outplaying Troicki...

If you look at the stats Goffin won 17 points more, damn, that's gotta hurt.

It's bad for the tie as well, Day 3 won't even matter now and Djokovic-Goffin probably won't happen.

He could end up making quite the double gift to Federer. First taking out Rafa at Wimby to clear Federer's path and then choking away the Czech DC tie and potentially allowing Switzerland to make the Semis even without Fed playing (Kazakhstan making the QFs would be the equivalent of a bye for the winner of this). I'm wondering how much of a favourite he'd be against Chudinelli in a decisive 5th match.

Berlocq was serving 3-4 when Kohl pulled his left harmstring.
Kohl served at 4-4 and Berlocq kept hitting to his forehand (for some unknown reason), and Kohl was ripping them because he couldn't move left.

Berlocq served at 4-5 and won 3 points just hitting at 20 mph to the backhand. At 40-0, Kohl decided to retire. He couldn't walk. 8 points later it would've been over.

I wouldn't either, but Switzerland would still need to win the doubles in order to avoid having to rely on Chudinelli for the last singles match.
