Del Potro, Gulbis & Korolev Are Far Better Than Donald Young

You all here are just so jaded and focused on Donald Young - I just cannot believe you guys. Why hasn't anyone feted other young players like Juan Martín del Potro, Ernests Gulbis & Evgeny Korolev?

Donald Young is clearly the most overated & overhyped player at the moment. Young players around Young's age like Juan Martín del Potro, Ernests Gulbis & Evgeny Korolev are far better results and have higher rankings than Young and yet the media doesn't cover them. Why is the media so focused on Young? I think because he's unusual - he's black. This is so unfair.....

What is your problem with Young? You seem to have an unhealthy preoccupation with his race. The attention he's been getting has nothing to do with his race. It has everything to do with the fact he had a successful junior career and showed enormous potential, has talent on the court and great hands, impressed Mcenroe and was talked up by him, is American when American fans seem to be desperate for an American champion, was signed up by IMG and endorsed by Nike. This also happens to be a website predominantly frequented by Americans, who would have experienced all the hype surrounding Young when he first started to emerge. Donald Young is not really talked about outside of America at the moment. By comparison, Scoville Jenkins, who was a little ahead of Young at one point last year and also happens to be black, got no attention. So how do you explain that? Each of the players you mentioned will be more familiar to their countries natives, we are just not on an Argentinian, Latvian or Russian website. As the previous poster said, get over it.

Big deal that Donald Young won Junior Grand Slams, so did Gael Monfils, who did far better in the Junior Grand Slams than Donald Young. You are right - Scoville Jenkins is doing far better and should be feted not Young. My problem is that the media is just hyping the wrong person - Donald Young. Del Potro, Gulbis & Korolev are way better. Gulbis is also 18 years old and is now the youngest person left in the US Open when Juan Martín del Potro (No. 54 in the world, who is also 18 years old like Donald Young) lost last night. Gulbis should be the talk of the media not Young.

The media hasn't mentioned anything about Ernests Gulbis and this is so unfair. This thing about Donald Young being a genius needs to go away. His talk of winning at least all grand slams at least twice is just a horrible joke. Nadal will wear him down and destroy him on any surface and shut him up.

Firstly, Young said he would like to win the Grandslams twice when asked about his dreams, and when he was a kid. Secondly, attention serves no long term purpose. You still have to produce. Do you think Gulbis cares he is not receiving a lot of attention, which will probably change anyway? Only attention wh(o)res crave attention. Really, get over it. Donald Young comes across as a very down to earth person, does not appear to be arrogant at all. He can hardly be blamed for the pressure and hype which has been heaped on him.

I depends where you live. I don't know if you live in America but Donald Young is really over hyped here. Del Potro is probably just as hyped as donald in Argentina. most likely the same as Gulbis in Latvia and Korolev in Russia.
However I do agree they should concetrate on other youngsters than just Young..

let me just say that i am far from being donald young's #1 fan, since i don't follow the juniors and he hasn't done much on the tour. i recognize that he's an up-and-comer . . . but i am also the same dork who posts "who's donald young?" every time someone starts a thread about him. (yes, guilty as charged - heh!)

HAVING SAID THAT . . . i still don't understand why you feel compelled to start threads bashing him. you have one in pro results, and now this one. i mean, if the hype around him bugs you that much, ignore it. that's what i do (not that he bugs me). or better yet, start threads hyping the guys you think are better. talk about what those guys bring to the table. there's no need to bring young down in order to elevate the others. time will tell which guys emerge as the creme of the crop.

donald can't help the desperate american media looking for their next tennis star. and he also can't help that he's black. but you bringing up his race all the time is a little odd, in that it distracts from the main issue: talent. and it also undermines your cred a little.

the people you talked about are often mentioned in conversations about up and coming players. however, donald young is an american, and we are in the middle of the us open. This major is generally one that americans excel in. the media that you and I are listening to is pro american and biased.

now, to address your racist remarks: you're an ******* man...

Donald Young wasn't hyped because he's Black, he was hyped because JOHN MCENROE wanted him to be and wouldn't stop talking about him. Johnny Mac got DY signed to his agency (IMG) and his personal agent helps manage DY. He only gets hype in the US, and almost all of it is the result of extensive work done by his agents (so kudos to them for earning their paycheck).

But, you really are just a bitter, racist baby. I'll have to agree with everyone else there. Since you don't seem to contribute to any other discussions around here, I can only say welcome to my ignore list. :)

How is what he said racist? It seems to me that he's blaming the white contingent of the tennis world - not Young himself.

Mcenroe had one great talent, and that was playing tennis. He is the worst commentator in sports history. He doesn't clue into anything about anyone elses game and he is a horrible, horrible example to the game. It is noooooo coincidence that tennis has died a miserable death in terms of popularity as soon as this ignorant boor was given a mike(microphone).

Young is awful. I cannot believe he won two rounds in this championship, it just goes to show you that every dog wins a race, and has a day. Guy is slower than molasses, has a girls under 16 serve, and has the most wooden hips I have ever seen. And his backhand blows.

And here is Thomas Berdych in obvious physical discomfort, probably because of the phenomenal air pollution in New York, and the boor is going on, that it is all mental. But what can you expect from a guy who looks 300 years old, and hasn't even reached 50 yet?

It racist because he makes it sound like Young is being hyped because he's black, not because he's a good player. When the hype surrounding him has more to do with the American media looking for the next American thing. Since the Sampras generation has been retiring, the media has been asking where is the generation that would take up the mantle. Well, Andy, James, Marty and their generation hasn't done much. So they are looking for someone to pick up the baton and run.

Get over the whole "black" thing already.

What are you talking about, Mcenroe is probably one of the greatest personalities in tennis ever. He's no analyst but he's good for American fans because his voice and personality is familiar and he has a good sense of humor. Honestly, who do you want to hear, Mary Carillo? To say that a single commentator single-handily was responsible for the death of tennis popularity not only sounds ridiculous, but is extremely ignorant. Especially if your talking about John Mcenroe, who instead brought tennis popularity to its all time highest.

Young slower than molasses? Of any weakness discussed about him, speed was never once an issue. Did you ever even see him play? Girls serve? He constantly serves in the 120s. Again what the hell are you talking about? Bad backhand? Nickolay Davydenko said he was the most solid American from both sides. Thats gotta mean something, right? Your ignorance slays me, and your hate of American tennis is extremely obvious.

120's with no accuracy. And he has no hips. He has quickness off the first step, but after that he is hilarious to watch. Americans haven't a clue about movement, not since Connors. And a hate on for Americans? Who loves Americans these days? Not even Americans. See ya in Iran.

The above guys are not Americans...it is as simple as that. If they were, I am sure they would get plenty of coverage.

Latvia of all places...

What is with you with Young and his hips?

His hips are very, very, very weak, and seized up from trying to get extra horsepower out of them. As a result, it makes for a short little man with no shoulders that walks like a penguin. I have seen many athletes like this, and they generally have great hands, I suppose as a compensation, or the creator giving very few people all the face cards at one time. But it is rectifiable, but obviously, whoever is coaching him, hasn't a clue about it.

I will say, that he has a great forehand, and phenomenal angle on it. Something to build on, but apart from that, he needs to go to town.

Amazing that certain members can work overtime crappng on a kid, but are not as vocal about the majority of the so-called established, baseline bashing top pros who will never amount to anything great whether Federer exists or not.

Scoville Jenkins hasn't done anything of late - he has been struggling even on the Challenger level, whereas Young has had great results there this year. I don't know enough about Gulbis or Korolev, but I have seen Del Potro play enough to safely predict that Young will have a better career than him - he is way too mechanical and "cloddish" as a big guy.

I'm not sure if it's appropriate here since he's not that young (22 i think) but i think Dancevic has some good potential he developped lately. He beat Del Potro 2 times in a row, Roddick, Verdasco, ... Late developpment but we'll see what he can do.

I have no idea what you mean by 'weak hips', and I don't think you do either. Then you go and insult him by saying he walks like a penguin? What? Its clear you have no basis for argument, because you don't know what you are talking about. If you mean he's skinny, then its obvious he will mature and fill out. The strength will come, he already has great racket head speed.

I think Del Potro and Korolev are also very talented. Donald Young however is the youngest ever to win a junior Grand Slam, remember? There is a reason for his hype.

I agree with you on that. And that is what I'm getting at - his backhand blows. His serve may be fast but not well placed. I have sen girls under 16 run faster than him. Also, what is really lacking in Donald Younh is mental. His mental strength is nowhere in the ATP league players yet. He really needs to develop on that. He's not ready for the big time yet. A few years ago, Andy Roddick became the youngest #1 player in the world at 19 years old. I can assure you that Donald Young will never break that record let alone win a grand slam tournament. Nadal, Djokovic & other players will win before he ever does.

Gulbis is from Latvia. I'm sure he's all over Latvian TV at the moment. Sorry if Americans don't care about a Latvian tennis player as much as an American one.

I, personally, find Young's game more interesting. I like the way he constructs points when he is playing well. Young is also the least physically matured compared to Gulbis and Del Potro, so there is a forthcoming physical element to him that has yet to be seen.

All I know is, he fought hard against Lopez, who later took a set off of Federer. Young is a talent. He's American. America has the biggest media outlets in the world. Do the math.

You know what if one more idiot tennis fan accuses one more tennis player of getting special treatment because of their race I am going to get nasty with my comments. I'll refrain for now and simply ask the question

when the hell has anyone in america recieved special treatment especially in the public eye because they had dark skin, seriously ?
