That's kinda funny, he is going to experience what it's like for junior or some college players to play, with only two rackets. The pressure is on, after you break the strings of the first one and you have at least two sets to go.

But why can't Wilson just make 50 new sticks for him?

^ Because it takes time for a racquet to be 'broken in'. They tried that, and he didn't like it. Check to Delpo racquet thread for more info.

Can't he find a few more on the used market? Can't they replicate the mold exactly? A truly fascinating story over the last few years.

Why would he use racquets that were used by someone else? The man is very picky about his frames.

    See post #4.

Surely Nadal is getting new sticks all the time even though the racquet is officially discontinued?

Hey, this has probably been answered to death, but, what's with the Kraphite pj?

Does the paint affect the weight, or balance or something?

There aren't any on the used market. It was a custom racquet made to his spec's, not the racquet sold to the public.

James Blake went through the same thing with Dunlap. He got used to his "old" racquets and didn't like any of the "new" ones. I imagine the old ones change over time, but so gradually players don't even notice. If they stick to the same batch for a long period of time they kind of get stuck! Now any new frame just doesn't feel "right". Over enough time even the base materials used to make the racquets probably changes as well, making it hard to duplicate the originals exactly even with the same molds and other efforts to construct the exact same racquet.

Makes sense, so why didn't he order new batches quicker? Couldn't afford them?

No, when Wilson produce the next batch, he just was not happy. Cost for a sponsored player is seldom the problem.

Some pro, I've used 30 different racquets since 2009. And carry each one. And that's just the Wilson racquets.

They're the exact same racquets he's been using for four or more years now. He might've switched more frequently before where he didn't care as much about the broken in feel, but after injuring his wrist when he switched to the BLX PJ he went back to his K Factors and hasn't wanted to risk it since.

The most hilarious part about this is watching Delpo catch himself whenever he felt like smashing his racquet in frustration last year.

isn't it true that Delpo refused any PJ on his frames because he's superstitious and didn't want to change "a winning formula" (expecially after his injury in 2010) ?

Honestly, he has only himself to blame! I can understand him in some way, but as a pro you've got to be realistic: starting a new season with only 2 very heavily used rackets is not going to bode well!
He should've stuck them on the wall and forced himself to use a new model, he has had almost two months off without any tournaments for testing...

It's true though!Or do you see any other pro in the top 100 touring with only 2 rackets??
And then additionally complaining that he has it harder on tour than the others who have 8 or more rackets in their bag:confused:

“I was close to change, but I'm not feeling 100 percent at the moment,” said del Potro, who joked that if he does break both racquets in Melbourne, he will ask fellow Wilson player Roger Federer to borrow one.

So..... Federer is now using KFactor 95 under that black paintjob :D

Del Portro, it's time to grow up! I like you man but cammon this is sad....quit being superstitious!
I can't believe he lacks that much of confidence on himselfs that he can't find a racquet!
He mentally got stock in 2009

Years ago, there was a pro named Jay Berger. He used the Prince Pro, and when Prince stopped making them, he went around to all the K-Marts of the cities he visited on tour & loaded up on them.

Had TT existed back then, I'm pretty sure he'd have been in the 'For Sale' & 'Wanted' sections every day...

What I don't understand is, why doesn't Wilson just take that exact mold of the racquet, hook it up to a fixture that will hold the racquet by the grip or throat at the baseline, and have a ball machine fire balls at it repeatedly until the strings break, and then rinse and repeat? That way, over time, the racquets will be broken in, and it won't really cost Wilson anything..

Well, I have a really beatup (not cracked) HPS 18x20 on 3/8 grip size, I'm ready to let it go if Delpo is interessed, he only has to tell someone to repaint it with K Factor PJ

It's not a 6.1 classic 18x20, but it's as close as I can get - and the beatup job is already performed for free...

I know Wilson will jump through hoops for some of their Pros. They made Mark Woodforde some 12 x 16 special drilled frames. I got a few and they're my main frames

One interesting thing though I would ask. During the years, why didn't his racket get a paintjob to promote the new models? Instead he stayed with the same racket and with the same paintjob as compared to other players who get a new paintjob. hmmmmmmm

Rumor has it he was superstitious and wanted to keep the PJ that won him the US Open. I believe he wouldn't even allow them to replace the grommets, just patch w/ tubing.

I feel like Delpo is eventually just going to get new frames of the same mold he's using currently and just get the new paintjob. He has to get something new VERY soon.

Plus, what other line would Wilson want to have Delpo endorse? A blade or prostaff 95 perhaps? They already have players for that. I think yes just going to get the new 2014 six one 95 paintjob.

nope, nope it's not actually. You really think this guy doesn't have access to the best racquet customizers there are? I think if this was an easy problem for him to solve, he'd have a solution. It's a head issue for him certainly, but it's clearly an issue for him.
