Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro has ruled out defending his U.S. Open title this year after having wrist surgery, he said on Wednesday.
"If all goes well, I'd return after the U.S. Open," said Del Potro, who had an operation on his troublesome right wrist in the U.S. early this month. The U.S. Open starts on Aug. 30.
"The tournament is and always will be very special for me, all my life but I don't want to rush things," the rangy 21-year-old world number five said on his return to Buenos Aires from seeing his surgeon in the U.S.
Del Potro said he might be able to play in the Paris Open indoor tournament near the end of the season in November.

///I am so good, eh? I can bet that someone thought that he will be playing in FO, but no.

At this point, any dates thrown out there, even by the man himself and medics can be regarded as pure speculation.

Long-term recoveries are nothing to **** with.

    Clever title!

I'm hoping he comes back fully healthy. He made shockwaves last year, and the game really needs him.

That's not good news, that's terrible news. He has no shot at the WTF without the USO

I think Davydenko might have to hope he wins the US Open to get the rarely-used wild card, but maybe with really bad play he could still get direct entry

Looking forward to it,the surface(slow high bouncing HC)certainly suits his game so not a bad tournament to comeback. Here's hoping 2011 goes injury free for Juan,he could really achieve great things if his health allowes.

how unfortunate that he doesn't get a chance to defend his USO title. i hope anyway he comes back healthy and better than ever! i love his game, and i cheered for him at the final--it truly was amazing to see--fastest forehands i've ever seen in my life!!!

i hope argentina beats russia in july so perhaps he has a chance to play davis cup it's going to be a very very tough task without him!

Funny, i guess we all thought "no way, he can't be ready for Roland garros".
All the players are very lucky to have JMDP sidelined.

While I hate Del Po, but like I hate the Yankees or Manu. I do not wish for them to be injured and not able to come back as strong.

So, that sucks. No more hair pulling as he beats Roddick in 3 sets.

Takes the fun out of sport. Need someone to root against. Plus he could beat Nadal....enemy of my enemy :)

I think the OP crossed the line here - yeah Delpo has Roddick figured out, but lets not wish for people to be injured.

    Somebody change the thread title...

This is just unbelievable. He rose to the scene beautifully then vanished in a blink. What a shame.

I wonder if he can play a few tournaments post USO. Hope he comes back strong in 2011.

I suspect he'll be back strong in 2011 but not much before. He'll slip in the rankings, of course, but he's young enough and talented enough to work his way back up.

Patience (for us - for him!) is a virtue.:)

Even though I don't like him, it is a smart idea to not rush into coming back fast.

Hopes he does make a good comeback in 2011
