Good info, Ico :) ... so the vigil continues ...

Fish out of Basel 1st Rnd = 0 points
Berdych out of Basel 1st Rnd = 0 points
Tipsy out of Basel 1st Rnd = 0 points
Almagro out of Valencia 1st Rnd = 0 points
Simon out of Valencia 1st Rnd = 0 points

Delpo thru to 2nd Rnd Valencia = +45 points
Monfils thru to QF Valencia = +90 points
    .........................................................

Delpo is scheduled to play 2nd Rnd tomorrow, thursday evening, versus K.Anderson (Del beat And last week in Vienna, but it was a 3-set battle). I'm guessing the result w/b the same tomorrow ... that match really took a lot out of delpo in vienna, so it would be nice if he could win in straights tomorrow . . .

edit: NVM ... false advertising ... apparently the ATP packed up its cameras and went home!

Almagro/Tipsarevic both say they need to reach Paris final to stand a chance to qualify for the World Tour Finals yet Del Potro who is beneath both players says he's "looking to climb" - is this cos he still stands a chance to be in London because he's playing Valencia?

Actually, I do believe I have something here. The World Tour Finals 'qualifications cut' (Qualification Cut: any player with more points than the cut is qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals)

Currently, the cut is at 3325 - anyone with points above that is qualified for London. That numbers is reduced as the tournaments go by. DelPo currently is sitting on a very strong 2270 so far.

So behind Ferrer who last qualified, Tsonga/Fish/Berdych/Tipsarevic/Almagro are all in Delpo's way - but have all lost in the last week. So Del Potro has to take advantage of this week with his competitors all at a loss.

thanks, Homeboy Hotel ... so there's still some hope, not mathematically impossible yet ... good link! [IMG]

K so Delpo makes it to the QF by doing the hat trick on robby koenig's countryman, K.Anderson ... next challenge w/b to face the vanquisher of tsonga, namely, American Sam Querrey!

So am I doing the math right? Would DelPo have to gain 1055 points?

Or does it get into that thing where people have points added and taken away and I get confused ...?

If Delpo makes the finals he moves ahead of Tipsy and Almagro into 9th in the race, but only just. In that case he would also need at least the finals in Bercy to move into the top 8 (and need at least one of Tsonga/Fish/Berdich to lose early), much the same as Tipsy and Almagro.

If he wins the tournament, he'll still be 9th but will only be like 260 points behind Berdych, 285 behind fish, so a SF finish in Bercy might well be enough for him to qualify, depending on how those ahead of him do.

Back to #13, where Delpo was after the US open.

Top 8 after Paris is unrealistic with Delpo's current form, so overtaking Almagro and Tipsy should be the goal to become YE#9. Then win the DC.

True, his form is good but it isn't 'that' good.

He seems happy to put the ball back near the court center (playing safe) and that isn't the kind of play that will take him too far.

Another problem is that he seems a little sluggish, I haven't seen him rush the short ball hard and put it away with conviction.

I'm looking for these signs all the time but few have shown up since early this year.

Not sure about that, rueroo ... i stil have some questions bout bercy/paris points to figure out ... today one of the commies said that if he wins his qf v querrey today, he'll move into the #10 spot in the race to london ........ and he's currently up a double break in the first set, 4-0 :)

Check out this web site Love Game. It has up to the minute rankings and the right hand columns tell you what the player's points will be if he wins the next match and/or what their maximum points would be if they won the tournament. Best tennis site on the web.

thx, vernonbc ... I was curious who, of the players vying for the top eight, has points to defend at Paris/Bercy, since that's the last chance for them to improve their standings after Basel and Valencia:

    Monfils defending ... 600
    Berdych defending ... 90
    Tsonga defending .... 0
    Fish defending ...... 0
    Tipsy defending ..... 0
    delPotro defending .. 0

If Del Potro can win tomorrow the race standings will look like this.

6 Jo Wilfried Tsonga FRA ----3040
    7 Mardy Fish USA ------------2965
    8 Tomas Berdych CZE --------2940
9 Juan Martin Del Potro ARG 2480
    10 Janko Tipsarevic SRB -----2395
    11 Nicolas Almagro ESP ------2370

Today I noticed a little bit of spark from Juan, it looks like he's getting back to himself.
    :)

    If he takes the title:

6 Jo Wilfried Tsonga FRA ----3040
    7 Mardy Fish USA ------------2965
    8 Tomas Berdych CZE --------2940
9 Juan Martin Del Potro ARG 2680 (260 out of 8th place)
    10 Janko Tipsarevic SRB -----2395
    11 Nicolas Almagro ESP ------2370

And can also get in by someone withdrawing.

Del Potro is finished. He will never win another Slam in his life.:(
He's done nothing even remotely impressive in 2 years and he's injury prone. Another Safin on our hands.

Points to defend don't matter in 'The Race'. The top 8 will be the ones who have accumulated the most points during the current year, period. Defending points matters in the ATP rankings but even then, ATP rankings and Race rankings will be the same at the end of the year as all the results from the previous year will have dropped off.

Finishing 2011 in the top 10 (which looks very possible) from where he started this year is very impressive. He's a shoe-in for comeback of the year.

I presume Del Potro needs to rely strongly on the other top 3 guys infront of him to fail strongly at Paris for him to be in London?

delpo's semifinal match against granollers is the first singles match today ... starts in a little over two hours. granny's been tough this week, knocking off dolgopolov, cilic, and monfils ...

Such fail in this post. So Delpo wins 3 straight sets matches in a row and makes another SF run consecutively and now he's done? Do you even watch the matches or just wake up and feel like trolling?

Yup, and the results from last year's WTF will fall off the same week. I think maybe you're confusing ATP rankings with 'The Race'. The results from Paris 2010 will have an effect on when or if JMDP gets to the Top 10 but it's only results from 2011 tournaments that count towards the total that will or will not get him into this year's WTF.

But, as I noted, it will all be a moot point because once Paris and WTF 2010 points fall off in a couple of weeks, there will be nothing left from 2010 counting in anybody's point totals.

Del Potro out (for now). Berdych in.

Berdych qualifies for London - two more spots left. I'm pretty sure Tsonga will take the other, but will it be Fish or Del Potro?

Del Potro would have to win Paris to qualify for the WTF. Fat chance of that happening. Pretty safe to say the final spots are Berdych, Fish, and Tsonga. Almagro, Tipsarevic, or Simon would probably also have to win Paris to make it.

He aint even playing in Paris because of injury he had against Granollers. No time to recover.

Trainer suggested him to retire when he was leading 2-1 in 2nd set.

    Yeah, afraid so now.

Even when top 8 qualify, there are always two alternates that make the trip over. However I have heard somewhere that Del Potro said to Argentina media that he wouldn't go to London as an alternate.

Once we get an updated 'qualifications cut' number, then this table should make more sense.

Delpo is never going to reach his potential, he will always be fighting injuries. He is to tall and dorky, his type of build is not meant for the atp tour.

It depends. Delpo's desire to rise to the absolute top of the men's game is kind of like telling a boy to do his homework.

For Delpo, the season is over for him. He's got roughly 12 weeks from here till the Australian Open to do how he pleases, obviously he has to rest this injury a little but if he really has the burning desire to get right back to the top then he has to pencil in some sorta training bootcamp over the winter to get extra fit, healthy and to prepare his 2012 assault back to the top.

If he just takes on a 'Verdasco the fiasco' attitude of taking a bit of a backseat and expecting good thing to come to him, then it's just not gonna happen.

He reached his potential when he won the USO. It's just that some people for some reason think that he's got more to offer than top 15 with the occasional streaky good form to beat the best players.

    He doesn't.

Delpo was never gonna make ATP Finals guys....he doesn't want to, otherwise he would have played Toyko, Shanghai, etc.

He's just preparing for DC, if he gets completely healthy by then.

+1, yes, I'm sure he would have played it, but he wasn't going to kill himself to do it. I'm sure if you'd have said to him at the beginning of the year, at the end you will be #10, he'd have said great. If he remains healthy he should continue his rise up the ranks next year.

Is there any chance Juan Martin could win enough points in december davis cup to rise one more level to No. 10?

You know, I think it depends more than I'd like on how Mardy and Tomas continue to perform as well. I think once you get to a certain point, hovering around Top Ten and above, it's as much about your opponents' performance against you and others at that level as it is about your own.

Delpo has a ton of points to gain at the AO, since he was in a tough position there last year. I think he'll make the WTF again next year. He should however be selfish at this point in his career. Little chance of them beating Spain, so just skip it citing injury.
