Ya probably. That match in Rotterdam last week was super close. But then again I thought DelPo would beat Federer last week after seeing Fed's craptastic form in his SF against Denko, and we all saw what happened there. So you never know.

Either way, a good two weeks for DelPo. Now he should withdraw from Dubai and rest up for IW/Miami. It's not like he's going to win Dubai with the draw he has anyway.

I thought Delpo would beat Fed too - anyway, if mika serves like hwe did today it will be super close. I think delpo would have rathered face tipsy tomorrow...

Del Potro likes to play tournaments in groups with little or no rest.
He'll play till he is worn out. :)

He the people number 5 player but I don't think he is number 5 in ability just yet. He still around 2008 level. Better than Berdych but not better than Tsonga or Ferrer yet.

That's a bad decision from him. What is it now, his 3rd tournament in a row? Then Dubai and Indian Wells/Miami is coming next with virtually no days of rest inbetween. I would seriously think about pulling out of Dubai if I was him.

I think so too. If his coach has any brains he will suggest that to DelPo tomorrow, win or lose the final. Remember in 2009 he won Washington and got to final of Montreal, lost to Murray, and then pulled out of Cincy to be ready for USO. He should apply similar logic here.

I would tell him to tank the first round and take the good money they give him.

That's just about where I'd put him now too.

He still has some more work to do but is finally gaining ground by the tournament.

    didnt!!! [IMG]

mika hasnt beaten delpo in the past, and i doubt that he will this time ... yes it's true Del has had some not-quite-2009 moments on and off during these two weeks ... but ... one of the reasons i believe delpo will beat mika in the final is:

Sorry if I haven't looked back enough in this thread for an answer : but would a win here take Delpo to #8 ?

i think he would miss by small margin though almost sure after dubai :)

So coming big tournaments delpo would not have draw disadvantage he could at least make quarter without facing big4!!

thing is, oh lovely loser wintintu (just today of course) ... he's already done all he needs to do ... and juan martin is a very intelligent student ... according to the atp website, delpo's career win-loss ratio (before today) against left-handers is 31-16, and i'm willing to bet that most of those losses came before he began being coached by Davin ;)

I disagree. he demonstrated already fair and square that he is better than Tsonga.
I would put him about 6th in the world right now

Ranking-wise (in today's ATP landscape), he's a solid #6 or #7 as he's beaten both Tsonga and Berdych recently, and quite comfortably as well.

Form-wise, he's far from his 2009 form. I would agree that his form is around 2008 form, when he was winning those 4 small titles in the summer and picking up steam for the 2009 year.

he needs to have more imagination in his game to beat the likes of fed and djok. fed really exposes his single dimension play.

if the austrianator doesn't take out the montreal missile at memphis later today, then delpo's position at fifth in "the race" w/b erased in a few hours ......... otoh, even if the canadian wins today, he still has a ways to go to get inside the top ten ...

About right for rankings. I was comparing level of play.

His endurance isn't there, his ground game is still not there and movement is still not at 2009 levels.

He can improve movement, endurance and forehand for starters.
Not near his potential yet but still doing well in tournaments.

All of these things can be done with consistent work, now with the serve becoming better he can be better than 2009.
The serve will set up his game nicely.

K so ... Delpo progresses to R2 with the 45 points, and Alex is off to play first round of dubs with Lukas Dlouhy. Tomorrow Juan w/b going after the 90 points for winning R2, and his opponent w/b the somewhat slumping Golubev, so Delpo w/b forced to win! :p

    WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 29
    COURT 1 start 2:00 pm
F Cipolla (ITA) vs [7] J Tipsarevic (SRB) - ATP
    [Q] L Lacko (SVK) vs [5] T Berdych (CZE) - ATP
    Not Before 4:30 PM
    [8] J Del Potro (ARG) vs [Q] A Golubev (KAZ) - ATP
    [4] M Bhupathi (IND) / R Bopanna (IND) vs L Dlouhy (CZE) / A Dolgopolov (UKR) - ATP

anyhoooo ... our man is now JUST BEHIND murray in "the race." 1045 points compared to 1060 at the end of today. I read that coach ivan lendl lost in delray beach today, so i wonder whether andy sent him a demand to show up in dubai now that he's available? it would be most inconvenient to fly halfway around the world just to advise his charge, tho i doubt that will happen, since I assume lendl was planning to meet him next in california for IW.

muzza and delpo are very competitive, so i expect them to both be going for a wins tomorrow! andy in the top half + delpo in the bottom half = could only meet in the final, and frankly i dont expect that to happen, but they w/b going after every point they can get!

K so ... Delpo's back on center court for tomorrow's QF match vs. JoWilly, so it w/b broadcast, tho it's the last match of the day/night again, but maybe a few more fans will stay to watch on a Thursday than they did on tuesday ... and Del's still no. 5 in "the race" and 15 points behind Muzza, who also made it into the quarters and will face Berdy tomorrow ... hmmmmmm

strategically, this would be the time for Del to lose and start heading for Indian Wells. BUT pride may preclude that strategy due to the fact that Andy's likely to lose to Berdy (their h2h is 4-1 in favor of the Berd, who last beat muzza in Paris last year) ... and Delpo just beat Jo last week in 3 on JW's home turf.

[IMG] the QF winners will each earn 180 points and $87+ ... so if both roger and juan martin win tomorrow, fed will supplant rafa as no. 2 in The Race and delpo will become no. 4, relegating andy to the fifth spot

    Vamos Delpo! [IMG]

This is good news about DelPo.
Nice to see him playing well without any problems, he seems physically fine.

He's playing a lot and trying to improve, get his strokes fine tuned and increase endurance.

It's important for him to know he can still play this way even if he gets run down some.

The rankings will come but right now the level he plays at will help his confidence in the long run.

    good analysis, Talker :)

don't want to create problems where there are none (as if I could pfffft) ... but ... I recall fred stohle in the comment booth talking about bernie tomic and the whole deal with the media making a big thing about his girlfriend, showing her throughout the match, etc., and fred giving the free advice that tomic should not allow himself to become derailed and, instead, should: 'stay away from the girlies' ... i know that sounds weird, but i'm pretty sure he did not use the word 'sheilas' :p

anyway, i've seen around that delpo's GF is with him in dubai, so i won't be surprised if the cameras seek her out ... does cause a little concern cuz he's only 23 y/o ... of course, we've seen kim sears for years, and muzza's only 24 ... and xisca peralta, and rafa's only 25 y/o ... but somehow i feel more protective about juan martin ... sigh ... they grow up sooo fast [IMG]

Rotterdam match was uber fun to watch. I felt Tsonga had the advantage in the court preference there.

Here I don't know who gonna get the advantage....but I don't think that matters.

Del Potro or Tsonga in 3.....either one will have fun fight with Federer.

So Delpo will pass Tipsy this week in the rankings right? Possibly Fish soon too.

Delpo keeps beating those top 5-10 guys regularly which is really impressive. He's beaten Tsonga and Berdych twice over the past few weeks.

K so ... best that can be said about delpo's semifinal loss to roger is that he finished the week with an additional 300 points and his serve was not broken during the entire match ... definitely seems to be improving ... right shoulder taped, bothering him a bit isnt good. dont think ive ever seen him have shoulder issues before ... mmmmmmm [IMG]

I was hoping he'd overtake Fish after Indian Wells, but that looks really difficult. Fish is defending 10 points, while Delpo's defending a semi. After Indian Wells, though, he's got plenty of room to gain points. And having a decent seed will make it a lot easier to do so.

Fish in a slump you know.......He can lose 1st round again...and Del Po can defend his semi.

In the end it is inevitable that DelPotro will rise to number 5.

Wow ... didnt realize how much of a slump fishy is in  ... according to "the race," he's down at no. 76 (even tho he improved 3 levels from last week) with a total of 140 points this season*

whereas delpo in "the race" is at no. 6 with 1145 points this season ... if juan martin were to win indian wells, he'd have a total of 2135 points*

whereas if fishy were to win indian wells, he'd have a total of 1130 points ... iow it's quite possible for delpo to overtake fishy by Miami:D

*unsure if this takes defending points into account @ http://live-tennis.eu/race

And another quarterfinal vs. Federer. You would almost hope Delpo loses to Ferrer for a change. A fourth meeting in 4 events Federer played would be just ridiculous.

Considering delPotro came soooooooo close in Dubai and has been inching toward success over Roger, I give him a good chance of sending the swiss maestro home after the quarters this year (assuming he's healthy). But I must admit I was saying "ridiculous" myself when I saw the draw!

And, as you say, a red hot Ferrer could be a problem, except for the intangible of having played on clay for his last 10 matches, while Delpo's been tuning up on hard. and never underestimate the revenge factor. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Delpo's looking forward to avenging that DC loss on DF's "beloved clay" last November. I'm thinking juan martin's actually hoping to meet ferru in the fourth round! :D

Didn't have just something to do with it, he created it. I think his name was Chewbacca(?) or something like that? I'm glad to see he has some ads on it now so he's making some money for all his work, or at least is getting his costs covered.

Guys, I am sorry to say, Delpo will probably be stuck in #5-#8 ranking for the rest of his career, like Wozniacki. Except in Delpo's case, that wrist injury really f***ed him up big time, and I don't think he will ever recover his 2009 form.

I'm just so distraught right now...can't see this ever improving for us DelPo fans. I really do love the big guy, 2010 was one of the saddest years of my life in tennis fandom. Even with DelPo back on the tennis court, I am still sad to see him lose over and over again to ******** in such disappointing fashion. FML...
