As of today, Del Potro is nº9 ( and Almagro nº11 ).

If Del Potro wins tomorrow, he will be nº8.

Let's take it step by step.

As of today, the ranking would be:

    1 Novak Djokovic 11440
    2 Roger Federer 8950
    3 Rafael Nadal 8420
    4 Andy Murray 6980
    5 Jo Wilfried Tsonga 5230
    6 David Ferrer 4820
    7 Tomas Berdych 4685
    8 Janko Tipsarevic 3200
9 Juan Martin Del Potro 3180
    10 John Isner 2655
    11 Nicolas Almagro 2605

Djokovic will leave Paris as nº1 no matter what.

Nadal will leave Paris as nº2 if he wins the tournament or if he reaches the final and Federer loses in the QF. Else, Federer will be nº2.

Del Potro (if you are interested) can get to nº7 if he wins the tournament (not that he would care about the rankings if he wins the tournament).

How about Tsonga? What ranking would he be if he won the event? I'm just curious, thanks.

Congrats to DelPo for making it all the way back to the Top 10. Love his game. Very torn about his match with Fed, who is probably the greatest spokesman for any sport ever.

Did you see Berd's opening service game on Sunday? at 30-15 when Birdy and Delpo were both at the net because of a dropper? It looked like Berdy hit Juan in about the same spot that Almagro hit Berd when Tomas refused to shake hands after the match. then remember how he claimed almagro had been trying to hit him in the head (even tho the ball struck him on the upper arm)?

I couldnt get a clear screen sshot of it, so Delpo might have been fast enough to swat it away before it hit him, but Berd didnt do what he said almagro should have done, namely: there's a whole court to choose from; not necessary to hit your opponent!

If Tsonga wins the tournament he adds 1640 points (to the list I put yesterday, that was a "live" Ranking as of yesterday), so he stays at nº5 (though very close to Murray if Murray loses in QF).

    Round One Wimbledon 2012

Robin Haase (NED) v. Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG)[9] - (first meeting)

juan martin had the one match vs. alex dolgo at the boodles that ended in the second set because of rain. otherwise, i think it's wise that he didnt take more chances for injury on untrampled, new, slippery grass courts ... he did have a few slips and falls on the grass last year, so I hope he's okay tuesday vs. robin haase. robin, a tall guy himself, went out in the first rounds of both Unicef and Halle, so he also seems to be keeping his powder dry.

havent seen a lot of robin haase, but if he gets on a roll, he could give juan martin trouble; however, he's a lot more of a hot-head than delpo is, so i'm pretty sure JMDP will go thru to the second round! :)

K so ..... Delpo FINALLY getting closer to Centre Court.
if he wins today, he needs to be given at least ONE match on Centre, before meeting Murray in the quarters! :!:

Kei Nishikori (JPN)[19] v. Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG)[9]
(Second match up (after Kvitova) on No. 1 Court)

question: have ALL of murray's matches thus far been scheduled on Centre?

close in the second, but delpo's gone two sets up ... looks like he's gonna take it in straights.

if so, he'll next play the winner of ferrer/roddick ... has juan martin played andy roddick before?

Won't matter now if he had ... he gets Ferru again.

I would love for DelPo to move forward, but Ferru is a pitbull, and also he won their last match (even though I know it was HC and best of three) and I think he really wants this.

The way this Wimbledon has gone for me so far IDK if it's foolish to be optimistic.

Delpo will rise to #8 if he defeats Ferrer. If he wins the entire tournament :))), he'll get to #7.

Delpo will be sixth in the race after this tournament. He sure feels like the no. 6 for the year so far. Ferrer clearly ahead, Murray as well, but he's defenitely outperformed Berdych and Tsonga. Been way more consistent

sad about the whole davis cup, wrist injury aggravation ... now, juan martin and roger and rafael are the only three in the top ten who are not playing the asian 500s, beijing and tokyo ... delpo fans can only pray his wrist w/b healed in time for . . . well, it appears atm that delpo has no points to defend for the rest of the year ... is that right? ..... if so it seems he s/b able to take his time to heal ... maybe he shouldnt even play the shanghai masters this month?

I hope Delpo heals up and gets to play at WTF. His 2009 apperance doesn' do him justice for his rightful place.

Nadal would be out I think, and if Delpo too. Then damm Almagro gets it without deserving to get in....just like Radek Stephan!

You know what? I'm a little lost, and just realizing something.

Doesn't WTF have to have a certain number of players qualify, just to have the tournament?

I mean, can they go ahead and have the tournament if only 4 players qualify?
    How would that even work?

I appreciate your kind wishes for juan martin ... but ... you dont think being finalist in wtf 2009 did the 21-year-old Delpo justice? against the wiley 28-year-old veteran Davydenko?

Is there a 21-year-old who did better that year?
Or any year before or since?

I meant one appearance at the WTF does not make sense for his ablity? Coria had two apperances there and Moya had 2-3.

Hopefully Delpo makes it a couple more times in the top 8....is what I mean. 2010 Wrist INjury...2011 he was pretty close. Now 2012 he might miss the cut because of his left wrist.

If he doesn't recover well....and never reaches top 10 form again because of it? That sole appearance would be pretty sad for his ability.

There are always 8 players qualifying, plus alternates.

Injured players are replaced with the next best ones.

What I'm saying is, LoveGame's graphic gives us the cutoff for "qualifying points".

What if not enough players get enough qualifying points with the next few tournaments to qualify?

I mean, I'm sure that Ferru will, since he's playing in an Asian swing tournament *and* is ranked high enough. But, for example, unless Nico wins every tournament he enters between now and then, there's no way he was going to qualify.

I'm concerned for JMDP because, even though he's ranked highly enough to qualify if he participates in at least two tournaments between now and the WTF and does well, if he doesn't participate in any tournament till then -- which, given his current condition and doctor's advice, is certainly a possibility -- he won't get enough points to qualify at all.

Unless what you're telling me is that they'll lower the qualifying point threshold if enough players don't get to 4945, or whatever the qualifying cut is -- do you see what I'm getting at?

It is just a number based on hypotheticals that becomes continually lower throughout the season until all the pre-WTF points are allocated and the top 8 in the rankings go through. In June it might have been at 6000 or something.
"If you want to be guaranteed qualification right now you would need x number of points".

Okay. Thank you both for explaining that and for setting my mind at ease re: JMDP. Sounds like even if he misses all the tournaments up to Paris, he might still be able to compete.

poor guy ... seems fragile toward the end of the year

i have a feeling he'd love to play vienna indoors, where he made the finals in 2011, but that's probly too soon ... delpo and dnalby both seem to do well indoors, but theyre both on the disabled list ... maybe they'lll both play the basel 500, where delpo lost to nalby in the semis ..... and bad news he's only played paris twice since 2008, best being the quarters in 2009

but this year he's been better rested than any of the previous four years .... marseille was a good sign, so he might attain a personal best in paris ... if if IF ..... I'll just be so sad if delpo is unable to readch his goal of WTF 2012

Delpo and Berdych are almost a lock for the WTF.

The last berth will go to either Jo or Tipsy unless someone goes on a tear.

I think just based on all the time his doctor mandated that he take off, he's out for pretty much all of October.

    *sigh*

Del Potro should overtake Berdych on Monday, correct? He gained 200 points at Rotterdam, putting him at 4410, and Berdych will lose 180 since he didn't play this year, putting him at 4395.

Rotterdam is a good win for Delpo (his 14th). 4 of his last 5 titles happened on indoor hard. Is he on his way to become an indoor specialist?

No he won't. Berdych does lose 180 however one of his uncountable tournaments will be countable, in which case he regains 90 points making a net loss of 90.

DelPo moved pretty good and the endurance was there.
He's playing a bunch of tournaments in a row, he usually gets a little better at each one till he runs out of gas.

For all of JMDPs awesome play and with victories over Fedal, never quite understood how he's fared so poorly against David Ferrer - h2h is 2-6.

Delpo is hard to figure. Of all the non-top 4 players, he's the guy that could be in that group, IMO. He's the only one that doesn't surprised me when he takes out one of the top players. He can absolutely bludgeon players off the court when he chooses to flatten his shots out (a la Federer in the 2009 US Open). He has some puzzling performances at times (see 2013 Aussie Open vs. Chardy). I think Delpo plays too conservatively at times. He moves well for a big man, but not well enough to out-rally the top 4. It seems to me that he's too content to play that way at times. However, he's only 24, and I think it has taken him some time to regain full confidence in that wrist. I don't think we've seen his best yet.
