tim, there is always someone better.. but most are in a rec player bubble and have delusions of granduer

klem, its all about CRUSHING the ball right? ;)

"they don't look so tough when looking at them from this angle
it makes me think I do this all the time"

and the vid for reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6p5ZdGR4hU

    ^Wow. Just wow.

Ha... I wish! Saw him up close at the Legg Mason one year, here in dc, and he was completely destroying the ball. It was focused anger..... laser-guided bombs. Very fun to watch. Him and Safin are THE biggest hitters I've ever seen up close.

Finally video taped our session today... been promising a video of my wife and I hitting around. Will get it clipped and uploaded as soon as I can.

That's why this thread is epic. Incessant, fun racquet talk but not as much blind and often weird fanboy-ism when talking about the pro game. General Pro Player discussion is a weird, weird place.

    ^Oh my, a steamy FedK's back!

I locked the Falcons in at +5, so if you're gonna win, make sure it's by a field goal. My man in Vegas has been riding you guys all the way, including last weekend.

Watch the mike on sunday, he'll be shadowing you all game. Safety's gonna play-up, man-zone, just like they did against Russell ............. Wilson. (the man with two iconic sports brand names, that's why I call him the locker room). You need a nick-name as well.

No worries at all! It might have just been me, but they did feel pretty similar.

Regarding flare it felt pretty stock, maybe a touch bigger. I can't really comment though, I flare the cap on all my rackets with my over grip a little as well. :)

    Trader Joe?

That's the best I have for now.

Good to see FK (i.e. CK) posting again. The "Tahoe" story was rich. This Sunday at 3 Easter Standard Time, I'm sure he'll be "on the courts," but we know the truth.

^I think there might be a famous San Francisco'an named Joe to whom that nick-name might apply to better.

Colin 'the kid' is out there, too generic.

Out of Kaepernick, Russell and Rg3... I'm taking Russell for the long haul. Can't believe the 'Skins didn't pick-up this local kid, as usual, they wanted to make a splash and $$$. They could have had all their 1st round picks (for the next 2 years), Russell & Kirk Cousins.

I'm taking Russell because of his vision and demeanor.

Rg3's a great athlete, a track star, prone to injury and selfish as well. Local media can't even get an interview with him, unless it's arranged and scripted. Poo on that. Has a lot to learn about dropping back and timing routes.

Kaepernick's a phenomenal athlete, but the 49er's were in this position last year with Alex Smith, so I don't know how much value to put into his performance. On a less talented team, what could he do? Needs to learn how to throw the ball in there with touch, too much mustard on the ball coming out, too many times.

Russell Wilson, down 14 points in dc, almost a historic come-back in atlanta last week and all year long on a team that's missing a lot of pieces, o-line and receivers in particular, has done it with class, touch, strategy, skill and vision.

My vote for Rookie of the year, Russell Wilson....... and I'm a Redskin's fan!

Russell: Wolfpack in the house  He's a winner and I agree with you.

I think CK7 is the missing element for the 49ers; he eviscerated the packers last weekend(kiss my bicep) not to mention what he did to the Pats last month. Big fan of RG III as well. The big difference they did as opposed to Cam last year was all three of these rookies (including Luck) went to the playoffs, all about the results.

Gads, just think what your Texans could do with a Russell Wilson or RG III.

After Ross's comments and FedK's purchase, I'll be hanging in the Steam room as well. Mine will be here Wednesday. I took advantage of the TW matching program. Paid the extra 10 and ordered one stick. If I want to order more, they'll match the next ones to the specs they have on file.....nice work TW.

You don't even understand how sad/jealous I am that there are all of these epic young quarterbacks taking over the league, and my team, which is basically a quarterback, a coach (hate Kubiak's conservative and too-predictable playcalling) and a big-play receiver short of being a super bowl team... And we're stuck with Matt Schaub. We can't even really go out there and take a chance on trading for an Alex Smith or a Matt Flynn, either, because we just signed Schaub to a fat contract extension before the season began. GREAT!

Meanwhile, we've got one of the league's very best running backs and a beastly defense that's getting a pro bowl linebacker Brian Cushing back from injury next season... but if the playoffs have proved anything, it's that you HAVE to have a quarterback who can throw the deep ball. Schaub just can't. He made deep throws earlier in the season but it was always on play action fakes where the defenders got faked out and left the receivers WIDE open. He's otherwise incapable of throwing the 'dime' deep bomb where you have to put the ball on the guy's hands. Especially in today's NFL where a deep pass at the very least gives you a pretty good chance of drawing an interference penalty, since it's so hard to truly defend anymore. (don't even get me started on the 'defenseless receiver' rule)...

On the Young Guns front, I'm enamored by them all: Griffin, Wilson, Luck, FedKennedy, even Cam Newton (he did finish strongly, a good sign). The NFL is in such good hands with those guys going forward, once Brady and Manning finally head out... And I have no idea which one I'd want the most. There's a crazy part of me that kind of wants to say Kaepernick, because even though he's still a bit rough around the edges, MAN does he have an arm and such an easy breakaway speed aspect to him when he gets outside the pocket. His ceiling might be the highest of them all. And he completely obliterated the Pats, Bears and Packers in big games on very big stages.

The 'smart' option might be Luck, since he has the both the arm and the Big Ben Roethlisburger size to hopefully avoid injury and the occasional sack... But it's very hard to trust a guy with that neck beard. All that being said, he's also now the most famous alum to come out of my high school in Houston, so I like the kid.

Wilson is a safe, safe bet for stardom. Just doesn't do anything wrong. And RG Knee is now the wild card, depending on how he comes back from injury and also if he can avoid it in the future. Dude is a star. He just has that 'it' factor, he makes great throws and he's smart -- his td/interception ratio was ABSURD. Of course, a lot of that was helped by that zone read option play which opened up passing lanes BECAUSE of the threat of him keeping and running, which is now compromised. ... I still think he can be a star even if he runs less. An Aaron Rodgers type that doesn't run designed plays much anymore, but if you give him a lane or he breaks outside the pocket, look out.

Anyway, yeah, I'm so jealous. You Young Gun QB teams are the future of the NFL. My Texans appear doomed to solid 10-6 regular seasons that end in the playoffs to the best of the defenses who play Schaub as he should be played - giving him the deep ball because they know he can't throw it. Even look at Joe Flacco, the guy gets a ton of flack(o?), but being able to hit that home run - and having that ability in the heads of defenders - it's just so wholly necessary in the postseason.

    NFL Rant over.

If Kaepernick officially switches to the Steam, there will be bedlam.

    ^Ha.

Fran Tarkenton went to 3 super bowls..... how many did he win? NONE.

Give me a mobile (within the pocket) passer, whose got his drops, reads and timing down any day. I like watching this hybrid-slash type of QB'n (kordell stewart?!, Vick?!) but when there is 58 seconds left, one timeout and they're down by 2..... Give me someone like Ryan,Flacco,Brady,Rogers,Manning(eli), etc.....

Shaub will pan out one day. That game should have been played in Houston anyways. The whole coaching staff should be fired for letting the last quarter of the season go bust.

Anyhoot, wanted to stay away from the steam.... keep telling myself it's not for me, it's too stiff, I'll break the strings and shoot my eye out, it'll make my palms hairy... oh wait...

But, the truth is I stopped by my local pro-shop today, all the demos were out, otherwise, I'd have one handy. ;)

Hahaha. Classic Racaholic behavior. We've all been there.

I'm having a racaholic conundrum within my own set of sticks. The ol' extended vs. standard debate. I really do play well with both. I definitely HIT better with the extended, like in just rallying and more leisurely sets, but then in a lot of more serious set play, I've been having success and a degree of comfort with the whippability of the standard length. It's an ongoing saga.

Meanwhile, epic Aussie Vapor Battle tonight between the kid and the goat.

I'm staying up for tonight's match. Took the day off, had to. This open always eats up my vacation/sick days at the beginning of the year.

Was checking out Ross' stick of fame... the Radical Tour (zebra) XL. Probably similar to your 'zues stick'? Might pick one up. Even though I'm the constant fiddler of racquets, this puppy looks as if it doesn't need it.

Man I love XL sticks. They just get amazing pop with very little extra effort from the bump in SW.

I'd love to see an XL Steam 99S. Now THAT would be a frame that interests me!

Just picked up a YTIG Prestige Mid. I really wish it came in an open pattern lol. I think it'd be GOAT for me if the pallet was different and it had an open pattern.

Mad Dog has a Rad Tour XL that I've hit with on a few brief occasions. Way too much stick for me. A tank. I can get Zeus around far more easily. The Rad Tour is one of those sticks that you just have to relax and swing smoothly - Granvilling, if you will - rather than cocking and sort of slapping the ball (Gersting?)... When I relax and just hit very very smoothly, the Rad is a fun stick to hit with for five or ten minutes, but nothing I could actually play with consistently. Beast frame.

Speaking of Zeus, my tgk 231.2 brother Jeremy Chardy is swinging it quite well tonight, I must say. In my limited searching, he's the only guy who definitively plays with it.

Cannot wait for this Fed match at midnight my time. Will be VERY impressed, Klem, if you can manage to pull the all-nighter on the East coast. That's some love right there. Respect.

Trust me klem, it is too much. 369 SW IIRC. Had a very minor hit with my old one a while back and I couldn't use it properly.

But as JG described his Zeus stick, this does do something similar, ie., really pummels the hell out of the ball, consistent depth, enormous spin, incredibly solid. But unless your name is Sebastian Grosjean, who I think did use this exact frame back in the day, well, maybe not for the 'Holicy likes of us.

What about the standard size Rad Tour TT? I think it's underrated personally. Same mold as the PT630. Nice feedback, pockety feel, very solid, etc etc.

What do you dislike about the string pattern? If it is the feel then the racket may not be for you. But if you are concerned, as people sometimes are, about hitting with topspin you needn't be. You can really rip the ball with a poly in that stick.

That does sound excessive, violent and tendon shaking, all at the same time. Sign me up!

Kidding, of course, was looking for the Rad Tour or Rad TT, and all I could seem to find was the OS and that tour xl.

    Full steam mode Ross?!

    Gads, everyone...
Tried to stay up for the Fed match last night, 3am eastern start time. Passed out 20 min before (during intros) and woke up at 5:17am.... saw the post-match-interview in a confused, dream induced, poppy-like panic and went back to bed. PeRFect.

Well, I've only had the initial outing, but my hopes are high - it seems to be just what I've been looking for. Definitely suits Western-gripping, heavy topspin hitting, etc (and I did find the spin was pretty addictive.) But it also has added elements which I believe broadens its appeal... it's really solid, I suspect it's more than good in and around net, think it serves with a ton of zip and spin, swings lovely, seems to hit with variety of trajectory/power etc, seemingly has pretty nice control.

Anyhow, the 99s users obligatory string: 4G has just arrived through my letterbox, so, we'll see...

Seems like (from the reviews) a very solid stick. Ease of swing, spin potential and comfort?! Don't know about the comfort level but the string pattern should do wonders for that aspect.

I want to serve and try various grips out with that one. Must demo. Too bad no one has it available for demo atm.

SUPERB match to watch. First two sets were alarmingly brilliant from both guys, loads of winners compared to UEs, nifty shotmaking from both. The second set tiebreaker was really the difference and is almost must-see on Watch ESPN app or whichever way you might be able to replay it, if possible. The winner was totally out of the point at 3-5 but made some RIDICULOUS defensive stabs to stay in there, fight, and eventually win, which turned the tide.

Really, really high quality. Was thoroughly impressed by both guys.

The volkl 10s don't have the feel I enjoy. I really like how crisp this stick feels, but I've yet to put poly in it lol. I'm scared i'll just turn it into just another stick. The Volkl 10s always seem to lack feel and feel sluggish to me. I can't quite put my finger on it. It feels more like a Diablo mid than a Prestige 600 you know?

Definitely not the feel. I bough this racket because since first hit, it had the feel of the old POGmid's sweetspot, but more forgiving. Crisp, pure control, just enough plow, with great mobility. I just feel that certain aspects of my game have really been complimented well by open patterns. Slightly heavier serves, a teeny bit more spin, and a nice powerful feel.

I'm trying to find the perfect set up for both my prestige and my black ace. Nothing beats the feel of fresh synthetic gut, but the extra spin and low powered polys have just took my game to a more consistent level. Which is nice

The future of Tennis could be 6'5" and up, quick and athletic. Scary.

That kid Berankis is one of my favorites to watch though. All 5'8" of him.

    Right!?

Definitely a brattish quality about him, but he's still a pup and that could change with a few more humblings. Overall I'm just very impressed with how he's changed his game to being a lot more aggressive and going for shots this year, rather than shoveling shots back all day and waiting to see what happens. I was completely OFF of the Tomic bandwagon last year, thought, 'Nah, this guy's a joke, a pusher, won't get anywhere.' Suddenly I'm totally back on the bandwagon, thinking he's a definite Top 10 guy within a year or two.

Right now I think he and Janowicz are the youngsters that will actually break through, get inside the Top 10. Raonic probably as well, but he has such a huge, wide-sweeping forehand that's big but is also error prone.

LOVE Berankis. He wowed at the LA Tourney this year, going from Qualies all the way to the final, where he finally ran out of gas against Querrey. Same deal at the AO - qualies, then runs into Murray, but still fought very well.

He's such a great player -- good enough for even Roger to invite him to train with him in Dubai a couple offseasons ago -- but that height will always be an issue.

Story on Berankis with some background on himself and his coach -- really charming relationship between the two, and a super sweet kid...

^Yeah, heard about that. One of my favorites to watch at the moment. Takes it so early and just fights.

For me, it's still early to form an opinion on Tomic.

Tomic definitely has Top10 talent, could he crack the top5? That takes a lot of dedication, commitment and love for the game. Preparation, watching tape, hours in the gym, willing to change, etc., etc.,

To me, he's still so young. Loves the money and the fame but not the game... yet. But he will, eventually, if he wants to get to where he can and should.

Agreed. Still early. But ceiling is definitely very high if he puts the work in. He's got the touch shots and craftiness down, solid consistent serve, and now we know he can actually HIT. ... First thing's first: he's gotta gain a bit of weight, put some muscles on those bones. He was cooked both physically and mentally in the third set.

Great read. Short of leaving me verklempt. Like Berankis even more now. In 2-3 years, we'll probably lose Ferrer to retirement, this kid has his heart for sure. His score against Murray was not indicative of how he played.

Definitely. Needs to get more stamina.

Still is not mentally ready. A more mature player or psychologically stronger, would not have thrown in the towel 2 sets down against Federer. He kind of gave up in the 3rd after squandering that 2nd set tie-break.

The best 20 year old prospect by far though.

Would love to see Berankis become the Ferrer battler of the future. And you're right, I feel like he absolutely has it in him, the desire. Feel like (and very much hope) that he'll maximize his potential, like David.

Speaking of Battlers, two Little Battler matches could be very entertaining today. Ferrer-Nishikori, Almagro-Tipsy. Both could be fun.

Gonna go shower after a very weird 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 league victory this afternoon, and settle in for some Little Man tennis viewing.

    Ha, love it.

Too cold here for a stroll or going out. Tennis it is.

And we should take it a little easier on Tomic. If I had the A'tomic' Kittens following me around, my legs might be a little weak in the 3rd as well.

Just pick one, Bernie, and get some rest. My vote is for the one on the far left. Prrrrrrrrrrrr.

its currently strung with what looks like SPPP/CoF. Since I've never played with either string i'll try it out for a while. I've read good things about hyperion, but i think its out of my price range. Will probably buy a 75$ reel of BHBR17. Love that string.

All that and a bag of chips..... however disappointing the first two matches of the night were, that last one! Woke up early and still caught 2 hours of tennis!

    Amazing.

Incredible. Couldn't believe my eyes when I checked the score line upon waking up.

I walked into my club today at 9 AM and was like "Is this live tennis?"

Will attempt to stay up for Fed-Raonic tonight. Probably a 2 or 230a start time on the left coast. Pray for me.

Felt so bad for Waws. So wish he could win one giant match like that -- you see him make deep runs and get so close to beating the giants, but he never seems able to really take one down on the biggest stages. Gotta respect that epic backhand.

    Fed, PED, others,

Any news yet on early 99s thoughts?

    RHs,

Couldn't resist as I liked the + version so much and the standard one has been long desired to compare and contrast. Anyhow, I'm shortly to be in receipt of this beauty. I'm going to string her up with full TB @ 50 lbs and see what secrets she has to yield.:)
