The US was down 2-3 at the 78 minutes mark, and it looks like the underdog Canada is going to win. However, Canadian goalie(McLeod) was penalized for breaking the rule by holding on to the ball too long. The call was a "delay of game" that the US was rewarded with an indirect free kick. Rapinoe took the kick and one of the Canadian player was called for "hand" which results in a free kick. Wambach converted to tie the score at 3-3, and force the game into 2 overtime. The US managed to score the winning goal when it was only 30 seconds left to play in the 2nd period.

Canada's loss to the US can only guarantee them for the Bronze medal while the US will play for the Gold.

Do you believe they got robbed?

I saw both instances, and what I read is the delay call is technically correct but never called this aggressively, and the hand call was wrong as it was in a defensive posture. Very poor refereeing. I wonder what action is going to be taken against her.

I didnt see it because I dont watch soccer but heard it was as bad a call as the 72 Olympic basketball call when the US lost to the Soviets. Pitiful to make that bad a call.

I hear the Canadian goalkeeper may have been warned about taking too long, so I can't find fault with that one.

The handball is a bit more problematic. In real time, it looked close. Replay looks close but probably not a handball. Very tough call, but not a completely wrong one.

Very, very tough call on that one. In real time with no replay I think it was in good faith. A mistake, but not a glaring one.

Was the 6 seconds rule too tight? The goalie has only 6 seconds to get rid of the ball. I'm sure there's plenty of times where the goalie has kept the ball in his hands more than 6 seconds.

The difference here was that canada was deliberately try to slow the game down. The goalkeeper also had a previous warning about holding onto the ball too long. At the end of games in tight matches is probably the most important time to enforce this rule. Given the fact she was given a warning makes it a reasonable call.

The gollie NEVER keeps the ball for more than 6 seconds, there is no reason for it, unless she wants to delay the match, she was warned so I think that call was OK, the penalty kick was not a good call but is tough to make those in real time.

I've seen keepers hold on to the ball for much longer than six seconds and not get penalised for it. I've seen them get booked for delaying goal kicks deliberately however, which ironically wastes even more.

True. I think they keep an eye on it more with the underdogs, it's like they're looking for any chance to give it. I remember Cech got a yellow card against Barcelona and he wasn't really wasting time. I'm not really fan of it.

I think either call on there own maybe be forgivable, but the fact they were back to back was the part that everyone is enraged about.

Let me get this straight, the Canadian goalie who fully understands the rule trying to take advantage of the rule, getting called on, then her teammate and coach blame the ref for enforcing the rule?
It’s the goalie who blew it and her coach as well if he encouraged her to do so. If you choose to take your chances at critical moments of the game, then prepare to face the consequences. How often the rule is enforced is irrelevant.
Had the call not let to the penalty or the Canadians won, it would have been a non-issue. The Canadians are just looking for excuses and scapegoats for losing the game.
I admired the Canadian team for playing a fantastic game, but not so much for the post-game sour grape when they suggested that there was a conspiracy against them.

The delay of game call didn't lead to the penalty, the (awful) handball call did. Canada has reason to be upset. If the shoe was on the other foot, you know US would be doing the same.

Bad handball call. BUT, Canada's goalie set that up to happen by trying to cheat by holding the ball too long. Not entirely the ref's fault, and Canada certainly wasn't robbed.

First time I've ever seen a free kick for the attacking team inside the penalty area, and I've watched a lot of football over the years. I think it was the first time for many many people as well. I didn't even know this rule existed. Normally you would expect a yellow card for that, which the keeper never got as far as I know. So that was definitely bizarre, and then the penalty call was even worse.

when a player of the same team pass the ball to the goalie using his feet and the goalie takes it with his hands (inside the penalty area) it is also a free kick.

The US coach said she had never seen the delay rule enforced this strongly.

Don't make it a black and white affair and get all righteous about it. We all know what the rule is without the preaching.

The hand call was quite dubious.

To a casual observer like me, it seemed the referee was in a hurry.

The penalty call was a right one as the player’s arm was not tightly by her side and her elbow was raised. Soccer players know this.
The Canadian team should be upset at… not be able to hold their lead 3 times as a team, their disorganized defense, so-so midfielders, average goaltender (letting in 2 soft goals and the delay of game), lack of conditioning and mental collapse towards the end.
The ref was the least of their worries but they chose to focus on that.
