Did Tony Roche go too far with courtside abuse of Tomic?

Yup. You have to figure if Tony is acting like that its a last resort. Only thing left to to is kick him off the team and let him think about things for a while. Meanwhile everyone coddles him because he is the new flavor of the month. In all its a bad combo and will hurt his carrer for a while. I give him a godd 4-5 years before he figures it all out. Basically when another Aussie start getting the limelight and he has some competition in his own country. Tomics biggest problem is he thinks he is bigger than the game....hes the future....once he gets over that we might see what he is capable of. Tony and Patrick are just trying to ground him.

Patrick never had that problem as his brothers kept him in line for the most part. He also had some injuries kick his rear when he started having success and the game kind of went past him for a few years. He actually had a pretty big opening when he entered the ATP. Wins over Sampras (Indianapolis 93), Close 3 setter with Becker (indy 93), win over Muster (on clay!), Courier (lipton or newsweek). Tight match at Wimbledon (5 setter I think) in 93 against Agassi. Then he got injured and plunged in the rankings. Took him a couple of years to come back. So he was humbled early on.

Hewitt was a different breed of competitor entirely. That kid scared the hell out of players when he first came on the tour. People thought he was nuts. I thought he would get into a fist fight before his career was over. He was like a really mean version of Jimmy Conners.

It's an Aussie thing, mate, so I don't expect other nationalities to get it. It's part of our culture to let people know when they get too big for their britches (and Bernie certainly fit the bill). Nobody is considered above criticism here.

Looks like it did Bernie the world of good anyway.

Bernie said that the Davis Cup had nothing to do with his turn around now. He has just had time to work on some things and an off season to get a fitness base and to change his equipment etc.

Hewitt has also turned it around since his dismal 5th rubber effort vs the lowly Stebe and is playing far better this week -if only rafter and Roche had sent a rocket up him mid match, then he could have been playing like he is now and would have beaten Stebe easily.

You're not completely wrong actually. Rafter's public persona is very different from the real man. I did a TV commercial with him once. The guy is very disrespectful and foul mouthed.

Worked on his game, worked on his fitness, messed with his equipment. Hmmm, what could have motivated him to do that?

Tomic isn't a future #1. He isn't nearly consistent enough.

Maybe Pat was having a bad day the one time you met him

I'm a bit more inclined to believe all the other people who know Rafter and say what a good bloke he is.
