Now that we are almost at the end of 3rd day, please discuss the permutations and combinations of who will stand second and third in each group. We know that first is already taken! :)

Nadal 3-0 in his group fo' so'. I'm liking Wawrinka's chances to go through to the semis (I expect him to beat Ferrer).

Group B - Djokovic should dominate Gasquet and is the likely winner against Del Potro. Since Federer-Del Potro is scheduled on Saturday and the semis are played on Sunday, whoever wins loses to Nadal in the SF so it doesn't matter.
Djokovic on the other hand should beat Wawrinka in the semis so we can see another Nadal-Djokovic "classic".

Federer can still qualify 1st if:

    - He beats Delpo and Gasquet in straights
    AND
    - Delpo beats Djokovic in straights
    AND
    - Djokovic loses 1 set to Gasquet

Fairly obvious that Nadal and Djokovic will win their groups.

Less obvious but still quite likely that Wawrinka and Del Potro will go through in second. (Berdych and Federer have a chance, too).

So, the semis look like being Nadal v Del Potro and Djokovic v Wawrinka.

We all know who's winning the second of those two. Nadal should win his one, but if Del Potro can regain his focus, he certainly has a chance.

Is it though? If Berdych beats Nadal 2-0, he is first in the group...And given that Nadal has already qualified, I wouldn't be surprised...
On the other hand, if that happens Nadal will likely have to face Djokovic in the SF, so maybe he would like to avoid that...not sure.

I would still put my money on your predictions for the SF though, with Delpo-Federer likely deciding which one of the two goes to face Nadal in the SF.

How does the group stage work? I know the best two are going through in the both groups but do you count points when you win, and those two who has the most points go through?

These points is collected by wins of course, but i have heard something about sets? Like "now federer has to win in 2 to have a chance" for example.

Can someone explain briefly how the group system in WTF works?

    Thx

Nadal wouldn't tank a match, so I doubt he'll lose to Berdych.

I think that he would benefit from playing Djokovic in the semis. Sure, he'd probably lose a round earlier than he would if he played Djokovic in the final. But being runner-up isn't that much more significant for him than being losing semi-finalist, and his chances against Djokovic are probably higher in the semis than in the final, because Djokovic will have played a match the day before, whereas Nadal will not have done. Mind you, that match will be against Gasquet, so Djokovic will probably think of it as little more than a good workout.

It's the easiest 200 points out there. I doubt Nadal tanks.

Whoever has the most wins advances as the first player of his group and plays the second player of the opposite group in the semifinals. Whoever has the second most wins advances as the second player of his group and plays the first player of the opposite group in the semifinals. In the event of a two-way tie, head-to-head determines who advances first (i.e. whoever wins the round-robin encounter between the two tied players). If three players are tied, the percentage of sets won to sets lost is used. If any players are still tied, the percentage of games won is used. This is why it matters whether one player beats another in straight sets or not. In 2009, Federer, Murray, and Del Potro were all tied at 2-1 and tied in sets, I believe, and Murray got ousted because he won a fewer percentage of games than the other two.

I see Nadal and Wawrinka coming out of one group. Del Potro and Djokovic the other. I have a feeling Nadal is taking it all this year, but not sure what path will be taken to get there exactly.

Have you ever picked Nadal to win a match? No matter what you post is Djokovic winning. Pointless comments to threads since all it is going to be is something promoting Djokovic.

I would lke to see Nadal Del Potro in the semis. Del Potro will punish Nadal on this surface. Hate to say it but noone is beating Djokovic.

Yeah Djokovic looks like a man on a mission.I expect rafa to reach the final but even if Rafa is playing his best , I don't see him taking down this on form Novak(He'll take a set though, He never goes down in straights in big finals)

Don't see Nadal beating Djoko on indoor - in fact I'd put Del Potro and Djoko ahead of Nadal.

Hoping for a real badass Nadalovic final! (for both maximum drama and quality of tennis).
The final I would NOT watch: Fedrinka (zzzz I'm asleep already). I would not like Fed/Delpo either (it would be their 4th indoor match in a matter of weeks, a bit of an overdose).
Any other combination would be OK I guess (assuming elimination of Gasquet/Ferrer)

A Nadal-del Potro semifinal or final would be very interesting. Currently on hard court their head-to-head is 4-4, with 3 of Nadal's wins at IW and the only GS meeting resulting in a del Potro victory (at the US Open).

This, along with the generally poor showing against Ferrer on hard courts, is something Nadal needs to remedy. His defeat of Ferrer recently was a big step in that direction.

Singles Group A qualification scenarios on Friday

    1) Regardless of score, if R. NADAL defeats T. BERDYCH and D. FERRER defeats S. WAWRINKA, then R. NADAL wins the group and T. BERDYCH qualifies 2nd.

    2) Regardless of score, if R. NADAL defeats T. BERDYCH and S. WAWRINKA defeats D. FERRER, then R. NADAL wins the group and S. WAWRINKA qualifies 2nd.

    3) Regardless of score, if T. BERDYCH defeats R. NADAL and D. FERRER defeats S. WAWRINKA, then T. BERDYCH wins the group and R. NADAL qualifies 2nd.

    4) If T. BERDYCH defeats R. NADAL in 2 sets and S. WAWRINKA defeats D. FERRER in 2 sets, then T. BERDYCH wins the group and R. NADAL qualifies 2nd.

    5) If T. BERDYCH defeats R. NADAL in 2 sets and S. WAWRINKA defeats D. FERRER in 3 sets, then T. BERDYCH wins the group and R. NADAL qualifies 2nd.

    6) If T. BERDYCH defeats R. NADAL in 3 sets and S. WAWRINKA defeats D. FERRER in 2 sets, then R. NADAL wins the group and T. BERDYCH qualifies 2nd.

    7) If T. BERDYCH defeats R. NADAL in 3 sets and S. WAWRINKA defeats D. FERRER in 3 sets, then R. NADAL wins the group and T. BERDYCH qualifies 2nd.

Since Nadal is already through, I wouldn't be surprised if Berdych wins their match. I'm not sure if Nadal finds it that important to finish 1st in their group.

Whether in the SF or F, I don't think he will care that much.

Nadal is generally best when there is a lot on the line. In this match, there really isn't anything (avoiding Djoko in the SF doesn't seem a big enough motivation), so I don't expect him to be at his best. Berdych has to be at his best to make the next round.

I'm going for Berdych in 2

Actually now that Djokovic has won the 1st set against Delpo, I think Fed will qualify as long as he beats Delpo, regardless of score and the other match.

If Djokovic wins, Federer will qualify if he beats Delpo regardless of scoreline.

If Delpo wins in 3 and Fed then beats Delpo in straights, Fed qualifies 1st regardless of outcome of Djokovic-Gasquet match. If Fed beats Delpo in 3, then it will depend on Djokovic-Gasquet match (Fed qualifies 1st if Djoko loses, if Djoker wins in straights then they have to compare game W-L ratio, if Djoker wins in 3 then Fed qualifies 1st.)

Basically, at the start it might look bad for Fed. But because he didn't lose in straights and won his second match in straights his situation is much better than it could have been.

So if JMDP can get it done and Fed wins against him, Fed has a good shot at finishing #1 and playing the #2?

    I like that!

Thanks for the update on scenarios :)

    Is this right?

"1) Regardless of score, if R. NADAL defeats T. BERDYCH and D. FERRER defeats S. WAWRINKA, then R. NADAL wins the group and T. BERDYCH qualifies 2nd."

I'm sure I'm missing something, but how is this so, that the scores don't matter?

If this happens, all three (except Nadal) will have 1 win, and then doesn't sets and then games matter?

    What am I missing?

underground, any help here? even I am confused. If both Berdych and Wawrinka lose, then they both would be tied in which Wawrinka should go since he won his match with Berdych.

Djokovic has won his group and subsequently qualified.
The one who wins Delpo-Fed qualifies as 2nd

    Nadal has already qualified.

If Ferrer wins -> Berdych qualifies and the one who wins Nadal-Berdych is 1st and the loser is 2nd

If Ferrer loses -> Wawrinka only qualifies if Nadal beats Berdych. If Berdych wins in straights then Berdych 1st Nadal 2nd. If Berdych wins 2-1 then Nadal 1st and Berdych 2nd

If Djokovic loses to Gasquet, which is unlikely, that would give him 5-4 set record, and Federer will be 5-3 which should make him a winner of group B. Why do they say Djokovic won the group?

YOu made it like I missed everything. I got it 3/4 right and missed only Del Potro/Federer.
The final will be Djokovic - Federer and the winner will be Djokovic.

Unless Novak is really exhausted and will be unable to play three tough matches in three days. The Bercy/WTF scheduling really sucks big time and it is by far the worst for Novak this year.

There you go again. It's never just about Djokovic winning for you, it's also about Nadal losing. Your hatred of him is truly pathetic.

And you think you're an impartial poster
