Ohio State 6-1 over Ole Miss. Not sure why Kalle Norberg did not play, but must be injury-related. Ole Miss were underdogs anyway, but no hope at all with Norberg out.

UCLA looks overrated at #6 win a 4-3 win yesterday over UC-Irvine.

I have to think that Baylor will beat UCLA on Sunday in Waco and the rankings will certainly be juggled next week.

Texas 4-3 over Texas A&M. I picked Texas A&M to win that one. Comeback in doubles was crucial.

I think that those who picked Stanford 4th in the Pac-10 would have to reconsider by now. UCLA loses Nick Meister and looks shaky. Cal loses to Texas Tech who loses to Stanford. Only USC looks better than Stanford in the Pac-10.

I am also wondering how USC will look in May. Newcomer Emilio Gomez sounded like a scary addition. I had visions of him playing #2 and pushing everyone else down a spot. Yesterday he lost at #5 to San Diego. Maybe he is still getting acclimated to college tennis, etc., but I don't think that USC matches up well at 2/3/4 against Tennessee and Virginia. It will be interesting to see USC at the indoors and see if they are truly part of the big 3 at the top as I thought.

Well, i think it was more of a prospect ranking. UCLA has great future prospect with all the talented Freshmen. I think they will be tough once these kids get more experience in NCAA tennis and playing better tennis. I don't think they are over-rated at all.

UCLA is struggling. Their doubles is weak, and all they really have is a couple good freshmen, but even Kosak lost yesterday so not much to save the team.

Actually, early season rankings are primarily based on the rankings from the end of the previous season. Once a team loses, then the voters will put them where they actually belong in the rankings. There is a big drop from last year to this year at UCLA, plus their ranking cannot take into account the injury to Nick Meister that just happened a month ago. Poll voters do not immediately drop you 8 spots when the injury is announced. They wait for a loss to happen.

If Baylor beats UCLA on Sunday, as I expect, I think that UCLA will not just drop a couple of spots. My guess is that the poll voters will take that opportunity to drop them out of the top 10. We will see on about Tuesday when a new poll is released.

In fact, at this point, I doubt that UCLA can stay ahead of Cal in the Pac 10 this year. They play on February 26 (at UCLA) and March 25 (at Cal). We will know a lot about the Pac-10 pecking order on February 26.

If Clayton can get to it I think Stanford could end up beating USC both times this year.

big match tonight between kentucky and UVa. i think virginia will be super motivated to get back at kentucky for last year. regardless it should be a very good match. for kentucky to have a chance they will have to win at doubles. i have a hard time seeing any team in the country taking 4 singles matches from UVa this year. but the matches at 1,2 singles should be good.

another thing about Uva's lineup was that after the fall season I would have thought courtney would have played ahead of jenkins but courtney's results having been as dominating as I would have expected them to be at 5.

USC and Stanford are clearly the best teams in Pac 10. What a joke to think Cal is a better team! UCLA does look shaky. Is USC better than Stanford? I don't think so. If they were goind to meet today, it would certainly be a 4-3 result but I couldn't say who would win it.

uclatennis.wordpress.com is posting several blogs a day about their Baylor match and their battle with the ice/snow. It's a very fun blog to read with recaps after every match. Should be a fun match tomorrow at Baylor. Wonder who will win, lol.

According to Huskies, there will be Live Video feed on every court but there is NO sound at the moment. They say they are working on it but there is a good chance they may not have sound still at the start of ITA indoors event...

Virginia swept the doubles matches and won in straight sets at 1, 2, 4, and 6 singles and in three sets at 3, 5 singles.

Jenkins had tonsillitis in the fall and other illness. He is getting to 100% now. Courtney, on the other hand, has been sick recently and should be fine in a week or two.

never doubted a UVa win haha. just saying for any chance for kentucky they'd have to win at those positions.

it seems like jenkins gets sick a lot. i don't know it might just be me haha.

also i think uriguen could move back into the lineup at 6 when the outdoor season comes along. shane's game is tailor-made for indoors with his hard, and very flat groundies and his high ball toss. uriguen's game has more margin and spin. but all speculation. they have the ability to see which matchup works better for the specific team with two good number 6 players like that.

Cunha is #9 in the country. The website must have mixed up his and Watt's rankings

Duke wins 5-2 in a very close match. Notre Dame's team is improved this year IMO. Duke vs Illinois should be a very interesting match to see if either of those teams can distinguish themselves from the Sweet 16 pack and into the Elite Eight crowd.

Florida squeaked by Florida State 4-3. Florida is probably overrated this year. having players transfer out to other schools year after year probably does not help the team. Maybe the coach could figure out why half his players leave him behind and do something about it.

Ohio State dominated 6-1 over Georgia. I had picked it the other way. Taboada did not play for Georgia, but mostly it was just a matter of Ohio State being better at several positions.

I also picked Texas A&M to upset Texas on Friday and Texas held on for a 4-3 win.

These three matches saw the higher ranked team win, so no big rankings scramble yet.

Very tight match between UCLA and Baylor. 5 singles went to 3 sets... It's 3-3 right now, and last singles fighting in the 3rd.... Kosak lost his 2nd dual match of the season with T-B in the 3rd.

UCLA weak doubles are going to cost them in dual matches during the season.

Freshman Clay Thompson ( long lost relative of Andre the Giant ) is the HERO of the day. UCLA pulls it out in 3rd set tiebreaker in the LAST and deciding match by Clay Thompson......4 - 3.
I knew this Clay was good when he beat Denis Lin few weeks ago.....

UVA will win it all, no question. saw them play against #12 Kentucky last week, 7-0 sweep. only 2 matches went 3 sets. Domijan is dominant. haha

Illinois is looking suprisingly good against Duke, or should I say that Duke is very disappointing today?

Still no KU Singh for Illinois. This is the second day in a row that he was listed at #2 singles for Illinois but was pulled from the lineup. Must be hurt or sick.

This result makes me wonder about Virginia's 7-0 beating of Illinois. After watching that match, I thought Duke would beat Illinois today.

Is Wietoska not playing in the starting lineup for Duke anymore? He played #4 for them last year if I remember correctly

Yeah, but considering Illinois losing 2-5 to Tennessee (who I think is clearly a bit of a cut above Duke), I wasn't expecting anything other than 4-3 if Duke pulled this one out. I don't know what to make of Nevolo. I watched Reid crush him earlier this year at AAs, and he beats Williams 6-0 in the 3rd a couple days ago (tankjob?). His match and Mengel's look to be the critical ones.

I'd say UVA's 7-0 over Illinois should be considered just as impressive as their UK match a day or two ago.

We shall see, Duke needs this one to avoid playing one of the top couple seeds in Indoors.

Yeah, must be injury issues, though I haven't learned of any details. I can't imagine him slipping out of the lineup this year if he was healthy, but who knows.

Marchese forcing a 3rd set would be huge as well, gotta stem this Illini momentum. I'm told Illinois is a pretty lively place to play, need to keep some breathing room for the players left on the court.

One thing to note about Virginia's win over Illinois, neither Singh nor Kalmanovich played for Illinois. The Illini's full powered lineup is:

    1. Nevolo
    2. Singh
    3. Hamui
    4. Souza
    5. Kalmanovich
    6. Hoh

    Against Virginia, it was:
    1. Nevolo
    2. Hamui
    3. Souza
    4. Hoh
    5. Brian Alden
    6. Abdelnour

Not sure how much of a difference it would have made.

Also, Nevolo's third set win over Williams was apparently aided by several penalties. That's all I will say about that.

lol, he's a wonderful ambassador for college tennis, that's for sure...

so much for Duke avoiding a tough opener in Indoors, looks like a 15/16 seed in the making...if they play Tennessee twice back to back that would be really odd (especially since they play the two teams they played in the kickoff weekend again right after Indoors)

Mikej, Illinois is definately a great place to watch a match. It is always one of the attendance leaders for NCAA tennis. The students really get into the matches. In fact, Illinois will be hosting the NCAA Championships in a couple of years. Illinois also plays a very tough schedule so the record can be deceiving. For example, this weekend they play Kentucky and Florida. Later in the year they play Texas A&M. Typically they also play Stanford but I don't think they play this year.

In regards to Nevolo, he is a true shotmaker. He literally has every shot in the book in his arsenal. Because he is not a power player, however, many people cannot assess how good of a player he is. The other players know how good he is. I cannot tell you that he is going to be a top pro but he is able to change his game to various situations. In many ways, Evan King, Tennys Sandgren, Marek Michalika and to a lesser extent Klahn have the same qualities. Obviously, Klahn has had more success in college but each of these guys usually compete well with a few exceptions.

The spring college season is really almost two seasons for us in the cold weather states. You have the indoor season and the outdoor season where the conditions really make play difficult. Players like a Devarmann, Klahn or Kohlhoffel do well at the NCAA tournament because they can change their game. A power player like a Britton has to really get hot or have the conditions be perfect where as these other players can change their games to deal with the conditions.

The University of Illinois is hosting the 2013 NCAA Championships. They have plenty of courts and one of the nicer tennis centers in NCAA tennis.

Interesting thoughts, thanks. Yeah, I've seen Nevolo play in person a few times, and he's interesting to watch for sure. I thought he was kind of over-ranked at 11 going into this week, but he's definitely showing some good form and proving me wrong with those last few performances (even though Rhyne seems like he had one of his nutcase moments, and Cunha it seems has not quite found his form from last season yet this year). He and Illinois will be interesting to follow this year, especially once they have their lineup fully intact.

Why does the City size matter? It's not like the Football, Basketball, Baseball or Lacrosse championships where you need a massive number of hotel rooms to accommodate the teams and the fans. If you can accommodate a home football game for a team in the Big 10, you can accommodate the NCAA Tennis Championships, easy.

I tend to agree with you. UVA is very strong Indoor team. If this was held outdoors, i don't like their chances but fast indoors, UVA is favored.
