Djokovic US 2011 vs Del Potro US 2009

Curious what you think about this match-up..

Both beat Federer in 5 sets at USO, but Del Potro beat younger Fed.

In both cases, Federer seemed in control and then lost dramatically, even though the match against Djokovic was a bit closer.

Del Potro smashed Nadal in 3 easy sets as well ( who admittedly wasn't in his true all court prime then)

So your thoughts.. ?

Legitimately a good match, Delpo was so good that year but novak would most likely have won, I don't believe Delpo's paCe would have effected Djokovic the way it did ppl in 2009

It's a very, very difficult match-up to evaluate, IMHO. On one hand, Del Potro is very vulnerable to any player capable of moving him around; on the other hand, '09 Del Po is probably the only player in recent times capable of hitting through Djokovic on a consistent basis.
In my eyes, it all comes down to whether Djokovic is able to employ some variety and how high his 1st service percentage is on the given day. If Djokovic manages to slice and move the ball around well, prevent Del Potro from pounding it all match long, he wins it. If he serves poorly and falls into the trap of trying to outhit Del Potro like Federer did, (or worse, tries to grind and defend his way to victory) Del Po takes it. Whatever the result, it's a match-up Del Potro loses 100/100 if it goes to five sets.

Del Potro 2009 vs Djokovic 2009 at the U.S Open- Del Potro wins

Del Potro 2009 vs Djokovic 2011 at the U.S Open- Djokovic probably wins, but in the final Djokovic didnt even serve that well and was injured/fatigued so maybe because of that Del Potro wins

Delpotro took a set this year from Djokovic on clay...i'm pretty sure that he would blast away through Djokovic.

On any surface.

The way he moves around a mover like Nadal, you can only imagine what he could do to a lanky Delpo on a fast surface.

He cannot hit through him either, he can absorb power and send it back at you with interest, just look at his serve retunrn to get a clue.

This is a no brainer.

Tough to say about Djoko-Delpo, but your observation shows that playing against Federer is more difficult for both of them than playing against Nadal.

They are also the only men to beat Fedal in a major.

I think 2011 Novak would have won because of the match-up(I think Novak is a terrible match up for him) but Delpo's 2009 USO level was probably higher against the field.

Novak isn't a great matchup for DelPo.
However DelPo beat Nadal and Fed in more convincing fashion.

Djokovic would have a problem getting to some balls no matter how well he moves.
A player like Davydenko can beat DelPo, he moves him around and has some sharp angles to his shots while taking the ball early.
Djokovic doesn't do this as well, he gives you the ball back with good pace, DelPo likes this a great deal.

Top form Djokovic lost a set to an very below 2009 DelPo on clay that negates power, so he has some kind of problems with DelPo's game.

Endurance would probably be a factor though DelPo did go 5 sets with Fed and looked strong in the fifth set.

DelPo in 4.
His power that semi and that final was simply outrageous.
Nole would have had a very hard time to defnd against it in the long run.

Delpo. If he never got injured and played 2010 he would be number 1

Totally agree with this. If tennis was stationary Delpo would win, but there's no way in hell he would track down the sick angles, drop shots, and lines Djoker hits.

You make it sound like Del Potro would win no more than 5-6 games in the match.

No brainer? Granted, Djokovic should handle Del Potro logically, Del Potro displayed the best power game I have seen probably since Safin 2005. Del Potro also returned "with interest" and made Fed's first serve look like the second at times.

I would say it would have been too much for the Nole, but I might be wrong.

Yeah, Djokovic in straight sets for me too.

I didnt say 5-6 games, I said 3 or 4 sets.

And, we are not comparing Delpo against Fed. Rodge, at least post his prime, has shown power players are not the best match up for him. There is no evidence Djoker has any problem against any power player. Tsonga's arm was falling off last time they played

I think Djokovic would win, maybe in 4 sets. Even looking at those highlights you can see how many times Federer was hitting towards Del Potro's forehand, even serving directly to it at times.

Djokovic would have the sense not to do that.

If Del Potro takes one of the first 3 sets....then he can win in 5 but if he doesn't he loses in 3!

Fed did a lot of things wrong in that match and he probably even knew it at the time.

Looked to me he wanted to beat DelPo at his own game.

It seems at times he wants to win how he wants and tries to force a losing strategy.
He's very stubborn that way and has done it numerous times.

It's all part of the Federer package.
