Have you ever taken it easy on an opponent for any reason? I play my dad quite a bit and I take it easy on him, but the way he is, it's like he forgets that tennis is a competition. I mean yes it's about having a good time, but I don't think anyone plays a game or a set and doesn't try to win. But do you guys ever play anyone where you take it easy on them? Here are some examples for me...I never intentional lob or drop shot. If I hit a short ball and it forces him to come to net, I'll usually give him a very easy shot to volley next. It's like I'm giving him an IOU...I hit the ball short, now he has to come to net and instead of me passing him I'll give him a slow kind of high ball that a 114 year old could put away...I'm not actually doing it so he can hit a winner, but just doing it so we can continue the rally and he can make his way back to the baseline. If I ever get the feeling I'm going to end up hitting a short ball...sometimes I can just sense my shot is going to be short, so I purposely try to hit the ball deep FOR HIM and often times hit the ball out. I mean hey it's my fault, but I'm changing what my natural swing was so that I can make it easier on him. I was killing his serve for awhile just by nailing returns to his feet with good pace...he says as soon as he finishes serving the ball is back at his feet so I'm now trying to hit deep but I'm not putting the pace on I was before. When I hit deep on purpose, it's because my dad has a hard time getting to short balls so I want to make sure they're back easy for him. Ok I don't want to bore you with anymore details so I'll just leave it at this for now. I think my dad looks to be in pretty good shape, he's in his mid 50's and we've both been playing for only a couple of years but he complains about EVERYTHING and it can take its toll mentally.
