I was a fan of Soderling after his win over Rafa in 2009 FO 4th round...since It would give Federer the chance to win his only French Open title. I fully expected Federer to defeat Soderling in the final and he did.

Now this year watching the final of Soderling and Nadal. As much as I am a Fedal fan...I wanted Soderling to win this French Open...Since Rafa dominated the French for so many years.

In my opinion it wouldn't do justice if he doesn't win the French open in his lifetime....Hurts to be a cosecutive finalist at RG and not win once.

I see next year the finals being a Soderling vs Del Potro Final....and Soderling winning in 5 sets of power.

Do you guys think he would ever win the French Open? He does turn it up in the 6 matches out of 7 matches at the French! I don't really care if he can win another slam anywhere else. I do see him winning a US open...but the French Open is the one that could carry a lot of good memories and failures in his life.

I said no, mostly because of Nadal. You could replace Soderling's name with any of the current players, and I would have to say No. If you had the option "Maybe" maybe I would have chosen it, but between "Yes" and "No" I will say "No."

That being said, if Soderling remains consistent I think he has a good chance in HC (I think Wimbledon would be a possibility too, but more remote because I think Soderling is not the best mover, and movement in grass is more important.)

He surprised me last year but backed up his results this year.
he has a chance albeit a small one. Every year he doesnt do it (after reaching finals) it gets that much harder.
with the likes of Delpo who has the game to beat Soderling (or for that matter the likes of federer) , And the upcoming Almagro types it wont be easy.

No rationale but my gut feel is that Soderling wont win French.

I think Soderling can do a HC run if when Fed gets older/not as motivated and if Rafa stays at his current HC level, which is good, but not brilliant. Rafa is a big,big favourite for the french in the next two years IMO, I still put money on Fed/Nadal/Roddick at WB before Sod,so maybe USO or AO for Soderling.

I voted yes before I read the whole title. I think he can win a Grand Slam, but it won't be the FO unless Magnus helps him improve even further. Nothing to do with technique or fitness, but rather his strength up there.

Yes.

Apparently all the players that reached 2 consecutive FO finals in the Open era, ended up winning the FO eventually....

No, he will not win the French. But he has a chance in Australia or the US Open. Soderling had two monumental victories the last two years at Roland Garros. But, he did not win the tournament. Also, I do not feel that he is the 3rd best clay courter in the world. The other Spanish players (Almagro, Verdasco, Ferrer) will beat him if they are on their game. Soderling is a streaky shotmaker, who is 6'4" with shots that can penetrate on any surface. If he cannot get those shots past his opponent, then he will lose. There was nothing he could have done to beat Nadal today.

Anyone that's beaten two of the currently utterly dominant champions in back to back years at Roland Garros, as Soderling has done, certainly deserves to win a slam. It might not come at Roland Garros but I don't think he'll mind where it comes.

I hope Robin can put it all together and make a serious run at Wimbledon this year. He deserves it as much as anyone.

Classy post, ksbh. Classy and true.

I honestly doubt Soderling can steal another FO from Rafa, but a title in USO or AO (even, although less probably Wimbledon) is not out of the question.

No, but I think he has a good chance to win it after his death.

Most bizarrely worded question ever.

Soderling isn't really a great mover. He depends on blasting people off the court to win, and he's getting older so it will be harder for him. Nadal is younger, and better on clay, and we could get a breakout star next year that turns up and lights up the field over the two weeks.

I'd say it's unlikely.

My final answer? I have no idea.

I dont think so. I think the 2 finals are as close as he is going to come. If he were destined to win it he would have done alot better in atleast 1 of those 2 finals.

I still dont think clay is his best surface despite his 2 FO finals. I think he is more likely to win a slam at the U.S Open or maybe Wimbledon than at the French if he is ever going to win one.

He needs to avoid Nadal in the final but for that someone needs to take care of Nadal, which is the single most difficult thing in all of sports -- beating Nadal on clay.

The field's only hope is for Nadal's level to come down and until then he will take most of these RG title's and deprive everyone else of ever winning it.

If someone does what he did to nadal last year he has a very good chance. To back up his performance this year by taking out the defending champ both years he's proved that it was no fluke. I believe he can in the not to distant future.
