does a rough string give you really so much more spin?

No. It depends entirely on the string. Most geared polys do: Spiky Shark, Blue Gear, Cyclone, SPP HEXtreme. Some textured polys do: Tour Bite, BHBR, B5E, Cyber Twirl Black. Some textured polys do not: Hexablade, Super Smash Spiky, Black Code, Zo Twist.

    Slightly, I would say.

I definitely prefer rough over plain.
