Does Lendl hit balls with Murray?

Has any of you seen him doing that, during training, etc?

Or he just plays the expert observer and adviser?

How "hands on" his approach is?

    Just curious.

Lendl can't even handle inferior-to-5.0 groundstrokes from McEnroe on the pensioner's tour, how is he supposed to keep up with Murray in GS-winning form?

So my answer is: I highly doubt it.

I don't think Lendl would need his racquet while coaching Murray if he never hits with him.

I have not seen any footage of andy Murray training with Lendl as his hitting partner, Lendl may be able to just warm him up, but train with him it's out of question.

Murray has a hitting partner and at the tournaments he practices with other players.

Most of the coaches just coach, don't hit with them.

Bob Bret, Uncle Toni, Lendl, Stefanki and many others can't really rally with these guys, they feed the ball and do court pattern with them.

There may be one or another that are the coach and hitting partner.

I've seen Darren Cahill hitting with Agassi when he was coaching him and he had no problems at all keeping up with Agassi.

well, like Lendl, Cahill was a top level tour pro. What these guys no longer have is movement, not skill.

of COURSE they can hit with someone like Murray, for coaching purposes.

for match play practice, however, I am sure they would use younger hitting partners, often in teams.

I don't get it with all the sarcasm. Murray won and we should be happy for him after watching him struggled.

Lendl hasn't played tennis in a long time due to his bad back. He cannot keep up with Murray during the rallies. But I am sure Lendl can hit a few balls to evaluate Murray's strokes. Lendl is a conditioning, strategist and mental coach.

Cahill is only 5 years older than Andre, whereas Lendl is more than twice Murray's age.

I'm waiting for Lendl to get with the plan and switch to Adidas gear. I wonder how long his Nike deal runs for?

I think I read somewhere that Lendl doesn't hit with Murray because Murray hits too hard for Lendl

Lendl as a player was pretty synonymous with Adidas, with the old Adidas logo painted onto his racquet strings.

I have seen Murray practice quite a bit here in Miami. Always has a hitting
Partner . Never seen him hit with Lendl or his Best friend Danny Valverdu. The only coach Murray has had that I saw hit with him was Alex Corretja. Alex is in great shape and had no problem rallying with Andy .

I don't think that matters that much. McEnroe regularly plays against and keeps up with guys more than half his age during World Team Tennis and that's actual match play, not just hitting or practicing.

I find that hard to believe given that Lendl used to hit just about the hardest forehand in pro tennis. I doubt that he has completely forgotten his technique.

That's because he used an Adidas racquet. It's the same with pros using Wilson racquets have the Wilson logo on their strings.

McEnroe has regularly hit with the best tennis players ever since his 1992 retirement as a player, and he has constantly been involved in tennis ever since he first arrived on the scene as a teenage player. On the other hand, the only involvement in tennis I remember Lendl having from his December 1994 retirement to his return to the seniors to face Wilander in 2010, had been doing the pre-match coin toss before the 2001 US Open final between Hewitt and Sampras, as well as being inducted into the Hall of Fame 2 months before that. Lendl threw himself into golf after his retirement and had nothing to do with tennis for years. In his Hall of Fame speech, I believe Lendl said something along the lines of "I am here to formally close the tennis chapter of my life."

Lendl has a racket so he can pick up balls off the court, and possibly also feed them from the net post to Andy and his partner. In the picture notice that Lendl is holding two balls in his hand.

During the Open they showed Murray practicing with a partner. Lendl was hovering behind Andy, occasionally picking up stray balls.

Most of the time they have racket to just feed balls while they hit with other pro's or semi-pro's

who among the coaches of the top 3 players can beat lendl right now?
paul anacone, marian vajda, and uncle toni.

if they can't beat lendl, they probably don't hit with the players they coach either, for the same reason that the OP brought up.

What's up with Lendl's strings in that pic, does he only have the middle mains and crosses strung?

Lendl used a 75 sq. in. Adidas racquet when he was on tour so he's used to hitting the center of the stringbed, so he doesn't need all those extra strings that he never uses anyway. LOL

But why is holding two balls an indication of anything? Don't you hit holding two balls first and hitting one of them? Pros used to play matches holding one ball in their hand during the entire point if they got their first serve in. They would hold two balls in their hand and toss one of them to hit their first serve.

Today's serves require coming off the ground and landing forward to generate the fantastic pace. Holding 2 balls is not feasible anymore. Also, in the old days men used to wear short shorts with no place to put the ball.

I agree about the tight shorts but I think it's also more because most pros these days hit with two-handed backhands so obviously they can't hold a ball in their off hand during the point. But Lendl used to wear the short tight shorts and hits a one-handed backhand so I think he's just doing what he's used to doing. :)

I saw them practicing in the second week of the US Open, and Lendl was hitting a fairly hard ball. The Czech's main problem-as Murray says-is changing direction during points. Lendl has already managed to tag Murray at the net, and with a slam in his trophy cabinet Andy will now feel emboldened to return the favour one day.

Andy travels with Dani Vallverdu as his hitting partner. He used to hit with Miles quite often, but he hits with Dani mostly now. I'm sure Ivan could handle some drills and practices though!

    Cheers

I don't see why you'd say that. It's hard to illustrate what you want someone to do with a racquet without holding one yourself.

Very bad practice. That was drummed out of me quick when I was playing.
You should never get into that habbit.
Everything should be the same on every serve and every rally.

On another note, man what a great physique Arthur Ashe had.

Lendl could hold Murray's racquet. Besides, I think Murray is way past the fundamentals and doesn't need Lendl to show him how to hold a tennis racquet. :) LOL

After winning the USO, I think Murray gets bumped up to a 5.0, at that level it is not necessary for Ivan to show Murray how to hold a racket, hit a backhand etc.

I guess its a Czech thing to use Bosworth racquets. Radek Stepanek and Martina Navratilova (and now Lendl) are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head that yield the Bosworth stick.

I think it's weird how Lendl wears Nike while Murray wears Adidas. Usually the coach wears the same brand as the player.
Even more odd is that back in his playing days, all Lendl wore was Adidas. The shoes, the clothes, and even racquet!.. all Adidas.

^^we all know nike tennis shoes (well the vapors) aren't cushiony at all for lendls aging knees, more low profile for performance..so if you look closely those aren't nike tennis shoes but look to be running or cross trainer shoes which happen to be super cushiony.

and nike shorts/shirts are a little bit softer than adidas though, so with gazillions in the bank like Lendl has he can wear whats the most comfortable, he's not worried about a small sponsor
