I guess I'll find out, just bought 22 sets of 2 year old VS 16 gauge for $100. The guy has a daughter who was sponsored by Babolat but she switched to Luxilon. The packaging has a picture of Andy Roddick on it, so it can't be that old. Craigslist is awesome.

It's probably fine. If stored, cool, dry, and dark, the gut goes bad quickly. The foil package is dark, but if stored wrong, it's gooey and snaps.

I've got three old wood rackets from the late 60's that have the original VS gut in them for 45 years and they still have only lost about 10-15% of their tension, so you could say that gut lasts a lifetime if it doesn't break.

I've got some old gut, from the 90s. I got a deal on it. Not a problem with any of it. Quite frankly, the older it gets...the better it gets.

The only concern is whether the person stored them in good condition otherwise the gut may become brittle.

anyway at $4.55 a set you cant really go wrong unless they are really gone bad... even if partially "expired" its still pg value4 money. Or you could resell them at $10.55 each - $4.55 cost = $6 profit /set x 22 sets = $132

Gut lasts a lot longer than that.

In a sealed package, it should be good for 2 decades at least.

I have a wooden racquet that I strung with Bow Brand gut back in 1971. The strings are still intact after all these years. I even hit with it last year and it was still very much playable. This is almost 4 decades!!

Gut in a foil packet should last some time, it's whether of not it will play to its full potential.

When opening a packet of sealed VS gut, hold the set in the palm of your hand and touch the thumb to the fore-finger. Then remove the restraining clip with your other hand. If the gut springs apart then it's gonna play just fine. If it doesnt move, then it won't play to its full.

You'll still be able to string and use it, but you may not get the best out of it.

    Regards

    Paul
