Eagnas Starting Clamp slipping

I was using it to bridge a short last main. String was Topspin Cyberflash. It just kept slipping out of the clamp. It is brand new. Would the more expensive brands hold better?

I just bought a new one from Grand Slam Stringers. Only used it twice, but I like it so far. I read many good recommendations on this board before purchasing.

I've gotten some good use out of my GSS starting clamp as well. It's great, easy to use (pretty easy to open. I've heard alpha is a bit cumbersome), and doesn't slip or mark up the string. Well worth the cash.

The alpha one is a little cumbersome but really you only use it what a maximum of 5 times per string job? It's not that bad.

Others on this forum have received bad starting clamps from eagnas in the past.
I have 3 starting clamps,(one from TW(it's a little wider than others), one from ATS, and one from gss),and all 3 hold real well. My favorite is the gss clamp, and it is very reasonable priced as well, somewhere around $36.00, I think, and is a great clamp!

Some floating clamps work great as a bridge.

I use a Silent Partner but, I figured how bad can a clamp suck. It either holds or it doesnt. When they made this they tested it and it slipped and said perfect lets start selling! I've bought some cheap diagnol cutters before but, they still cut. I am assuming the Eagnas ones dont even cut. As far as I am concerned Eagnas = junk!

I have a blue babolat set of tools that I got when I got my Sensor. the starting clamps hold incredibly well. They will hold at 80lbs, straight from the tensioner to the clamp.

I have an older red babolat clamp that will max out the sensor, no problem.

My $15.00 Eagnas starting clamp slips too! Haven't bothered to complain, figured I wouldn't get anywhere. Just use my floating clamps from the Klipper. Everything else including the stringing machine (Plus 6500) works well though.

You should call Maxline and complain! I would love to hear what the nutjob down there is going to say.

I always tie on a scrap string in a situation like this. I wouldn't trust a clamp to hold two pieces of string like that. I'd be worried about a failure with any clamp. Of course I have a drop weight, so failure for me could be a disaster. If you have some other type of machine, it's probably not nearly as bad.

What is the best way to tie the strings?

I always use a starting clamp, and it always holds fine, as I would not trust a knot to hold in a situation like this. After all this is one of the intended functions of the starting clamp.Get a cheap one from eagnas, and you don't even get what you paid for, get a good one like the one on gss, and you will be set for a long time, using a quality clamp.

So the one on GSS never slips? Wow what is that like. Alright after the holidays I will invest in a quality one.

I remember tying the strings together years ago, before I had a clamp. I would just make as many loops and ties as possible, so that it wouldn't slip. You need to work fast, after you see it's going to hold, before the knot slips.

^^^^ GSM46T, I'm about to order one as well....after reading this thread I might go for the more expensive one. hmmm...can you tell me how it goes??

im hoping eagnas sc arent bad. i just orderd one :(.

It has been on these forums for a while that others here have got bad starting clamps from eagnas, as I recall someone posted a couple times about getting a rusted shut one from them, and he had to pay shipping to send it back, so it is not even economical, and you get one that wont hold properly, so why bother. For a $30.00 range, you could get an alpha from TW, a gamma from ats, or a gss clamp that all work fine as intended.I have one from each. I keep a scrap string always looped through the gss clamp, as I cut things close at times, and that clamp is always ready, and always held nice for a bridge, without slipping.

Dont even think about it. It started slipping from the very first use. I am going with GSS you should think about the same.

Just ordered my GSS. 46 more dollars. Add that to the 24 for the Eagnas piece of crap. I really hope it works.

You will not regret it. I love my GSS clamp, has not slipped once! And, it's easy to open.

I'm in Australia and couldn't order the GSS one. So instead I went with the Mutual Power starting clamp. Is that bad? They seem to have good quality machines so I hope its the same with the stringer.

I don't own a starting clamp since I've never really seen a need for one, but if I had one I might try it for this type of situation. I do have a question though. Has anyone ever done this with two different strings, and is it safe? I tend to string from a reel, and while I could cut more string from it, I often have scrap of a different type. At least that's what usually happens. I would be worried about trying to join those with a clamp since they would probably be slightly different diameters or have differing hardness.

As for the type of knot I use, I normally use a couple of bowline knots with an extra half hitch on the on the tail. I'm sure if there are fishermen on here they probably have a lot of good knots that would work. The bowline is just a really useful knot that I've known and used for many years. It worked well the first time I tried it, so that's what I've used since.

I have been using Eagnas Clamp for years. The only time it slip is when chemical has built up on the jaws. This can be done using alchohol and a toothbrush to clean it.

You must have gotten a "good" one. Mine slipped right out of the package. Unless they sold me a used or dirty one? Got my GSS and it works great! Very happy! Your one of the lucky few!

I knew that you would be happy with it. GSS does not have a great # of items, but what they do sell is quality.
I remember a while back someone on these boards said that they got a starting clamp from eagnas, and it was rusted shut when they received it, and then had to pay postage to send it back! Seems like you really get what you pay for with just about everything.

I forgot to add, I am using Eagnas start clamp solely for tie off and bridging purposes. I wouldn't use it to for starting clamp as it is too rough and damages the strings. I used my friend's Alpha starting clamp before and it is way much better (in terms of strings damage)
