I'm glad the Miss Teen USA contest is just a beauty contest.
Ahh, I've seen this passed around on a different forum. Given your name, I might be able to guess which ones.
They should stick to asking these beauty queens their shoe sizes.....
i can't get enough of that. "and such as"
but i posted that a couple days ago and it got deleted for some reason???????
Funny the first time, and deeply depressing the second. Kind of like the movie, "The War of the Roses."
I thought the answer was great. I hope she won the competition.
OMG. a four year old would be able to give a better answer
intersting what kinda ppl there ar in this world.
LMFAO. Can not believe what I just heard coming out of her mouth.
Iraq and South Africa are the reason Americans suck at geography. Huh. Interesting.
Her logic is just way over my head. She must be some kind of genius!
Now, the question is, did I not understand that because it was too complex and logical as an answer, or because it was pure idiocy. I think the former!
(And I can't think of a rude three letter anything starting with W :?)
What the......... you know the final 4 letter word
I love how the host manages to keep a straight face throughout - I wouldn't be able to.
Did she even come close to saying anything that might have to do with the aswer?
in regards to the deleted version, i believe i said something like...
"dang that girl dances around questions like a true politician.
Miss Teen South Carolina for President '08!!"
I didn't think so. Man she is really, really dumb. It's kinda sad because she is really, really good looking.
or say something you thought was off air but really not - like "what a ditz" and everyone heard you, excpet the ditz. she just kept on smiling without a clue.
Don't feel sad. Fortunately for her women with her looks can get by in this society just fine. She will probably end up marrying some rich guy looking for a trophy wife. Now if she were dumb and ugly, you may have a problem.
clearly we don't have a genius on our hands here, but I deeply hope that her answer was mainly about really bad stage fright. She's clearly lacking some brainpower, but come on, she can't be THAT stupid, right? well at least she is unfairly hot...
Thank God for make up.
I hate to mention this, but does anyone else think our president sounds very similar to her when he holds a press conference?
ha ha. she should have done the fool me once routine that Bush did a few years ago. that was classic
Here's what's even worse: She told The State (Columbia, SC paper) that she misunderstood the question:
"I didn't do anything wrong. I wasn't expecting (the question). I lost my train of thought."
The only way that isn't more pathetic would be if the contestants were told the question in advance, but she wasn't asked the question she was expecting.
COLUMBIA, S.C. - This time, the question was a little easier for Miss Teen South Carolina. After being stumped by a Miss Teen USA pageant question on live television Friday night, Lauren Caitlin Upton's confused, mangled response has been drawing a lot of attention.
The 18-year-old got a chance to redeem herself Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show when she was again asked why one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a map.
"I would love to re-answer that question," Upton said. "Well personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don't know anyone else who doesn't. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography."
That was much better than her previous response, which included "U.S. Americans" and mentions of South Africa and "the Iraq."
A YouTube video of Upton has drawn a couple million hits and thousands of comments, many of them with harsh remarks for the Lexington High School graduate who plans to attend Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
Upton was taking her flubbed answer — and the attention — in stride.
"Everything did come at me at once. I was overwhelmed and I made a mistake. Everybody makes a mistake. I'm human," she said Tuesday. "I seriously think I only heard about one or two words of the actual question."
Upton's former principal Creig Tyler remembered her as a well-rounded student.
"She took college-prep and honors courses and performed well," Tyler told The (Columbia) State newspaper.
Miss Teen Colorado Hilary Carol Cruz won the crown. Upton was third runner-up.
I'm not as concerned with her "answer" as I am with the question. If it's true
1/5th of Americans can't find their own country on the map then that's truly sad.
I hate to sound like a dinosaur but maybe if our schools spent less time pushing a social agenda or trying to make sure every kid's self esteem was treated with kid gloves, maybe we would have students that actually know something when they get out into the real world!
School administraters do kids no favors by treating school life like a non competitive game of Candyland.
How would any of you reply to that question? I'm trying here, but I can't really think of anything.
I might say that, in addition to the lack of geography study in public schools (thanks to the emphasis on testing), our society in general is too obsessed with ourselves to give serious consideration to our place in the world, both literally and figuratively, or to those who share that world with us.
Edited to add: ...and stuff.
I would actually like to see how they collected the data that shows 1/5 of America can't find their country on a map. I seriously don't know any adults that would not be able to do this. I could see someone asking a person not speaking english not being able to do it because they didn't understand the question. A lot of these surveys can be easily skewed by the population selected and the methodology of data collection. If you asked people in a mall or shopping center who were busy and in a hurry- alot of them may not want to be bothered and just say "I don't know" and walk on.
I gave my daughter in kindergarten last year a globe and asked her to point out the USA and all the continents and a couple states which she visited. She was able to do it.
I don't think the title of this post is fair to Ebonics. Ebonics is a vernacular dialect; if you understand the dialect, someone speaking in it makes perfect sense to you.
Maybe only beauty queens could understand the logic behind her answer?
Regardless, I'm starting to feel genuinely bad for this girl. This is all over the internet now.
Well, I wouldn't use the term "US Americans", but I'm not an American. Does anyone actually use that term?
As to how I would, I'd take a silly-patriotic angle and then finish with an education spin:
"America is a great land, a land of contrasts and a land of such amazing people. America is also a phenomenally large country, and with so much for people to focus on within america, perhaps some people tend to take less of a world view. Of course, it is undoubtedly true that education is the solution to prosperity, and I feel we should be focusing on education in the schools to ensure, at a younger age, we learn as much as possible about the world we live in".
OO - who thinks that perhaps she knows so little about education as she skipped a whole lot of hers chasing boys and doing her make-up
Call 1/5 of Americans beyond dumb and lose < Pretend you're beyond dumb when asked a really stupid question and get your 15 minutes of fame, and then lose
took her the weekend to come up with that
OrangeOne - You definitely beat me in the Q/A round, although you lose points for no mention of world peace. I will have to settle for Miss Congeniality!
looks can only get you so far when you a complete idiot
I wouldn't mind having her as my girlfriend for a few months.
ha! :-D that's a great pulled out of your arse answer.
but seriously this is just plain sad. another example of the mediocrity of America.
Perhaps, but brains won't even get you that far if you are a complete dog.
Separate names with a comma.
