I thought it was interesting to observe that of the 17 men who won 4 or more Grand Slams in the open era, Stefan Edberg is the only player who did not have at least one season of winning two Grand Slams in the same season.

He came close a few times, though. His best chance was probably 1990 where he had to default in the AO final to Lendl, a final many believe he would've won. He won W that year. In 1992 he was in the final of the AO again, lost to Courier, but won the USO later that year. He was 2 matches away in 1989 when he reached the final of both the FO and W. Lost both, though.

Question for historians: Was the WTC finals really all that important at the end of the 80s? I don't recall paying it much attention myself. I don't recalling hearing much about it from anyone else either. Masters, Key Biscane and the slams was what people were taking about as the big ones as I recall.

While declining a bit in regards to former years, late 80 Dallas still was one of the top 6 events and best players tried to get there and win
Much bigger of course than Lipton
Fi 1989 Mac win was extremely hyped around and considered his last major win
Nobody would have thought that way if he had won Miami instead
So still top 6 but certainly below the amazing success it had known few yrs before

Ok. I was pretty young around those years and my interest in tennis started around 1988. My memories might be more from the early 90s when I was in my mid teens.

Hunt and his very professional team gave tennis a definitive boast since 1970 with WCT tour and finals
A big part of Golden Era
