Has anyone here ever stood really close to pros to get a sense of their height, weight, size, muscles, body definition?

Like, gotten close to them for the express purpose of the OP, or just an observation?

The men range from about 5'5" (Rochus still play?) to 6'10" and are all slender with well developed thighs and forearms. Any particular anatomical area of concern to you?

Early round of the US Open I was right on the fence court side, saw Chardy, Kohlschrieber (sp), Janowiz, Stakhovsky (sp) guy who beat fed at Wimbledon. Jovanovski on the womens side.

Main observation was REALLY SKINNY. Tall for the most part.

Even skinnier than they appear on TV. Like shoulders are all bones. Chardy is a total rail. Jovanovski looked anorexic thin. I'm 6'1 and I was around 190 at the time and by no means fat, felt I'd tip the scales on almost every player I saw.

Carrying around extra weight is a no no for pros, especially men who have to play 5 setters.

Seen Rafa practice at Cincy...all I can say is he picked a good logo. The guy is a beast, especially for a tennis player.

Massive leg muscles. Very skinny but strong. Most of the guys are pretty tall.

    Yes, this.

Also they all (well, almost) have sculpted glutes, thighs and calves without looking like they're the product of a lot of lifting.

    "Callipygous" comes to mind.

Like, I think a lot of people think Federer looks fat and Nadal is just ripped, when the ATP Website lists both at same height and same weight.

Walked along side Falla once. I didn't expect him to be as tall and built as he was. Watch Clilc practice, went to get a ball by the fence where I was standing and I felt like I was 4 feet tall.

    Celic is around 6'4".
I haven't been around modern players.
VictorAmaya came into our stringing booth, was listed 6'6" and 210. He was taller.
ColinDibley was listed 6'3". Yes, a 6'3" tall person in a 6'9" body. His hands were beyond huge, his size 14 shoes, and the bone width of his wrist and ankles.
HaroldSolomon was a true 5'7" and some change, but he was solidly built in the lower body, had wide wrists and ankles, and big calves for his size.
Ever see KellySlater? While he's around 5'11", he has huge hands and size 12 feet, super wide.

Yes Federer is a fatty boy, but with skinny arms. Nadal's got more muscle, and muscles are heavier they always told me so ATP probably is right here.

    This.

I once sat at the Swedish Open with a friend and he told me to have a look at Berdych's calves. Those quads belong on a horse, not a man.

This summer I was arms length from roddick. His calves are insane, and his shoulders very broad. Those are what stood out the most

Nadal has a very slim upper-body overall, but his abs are not fat-free. He's always said that he hates the gym and avoids weight-lifting at all costs, and it shows. He's a swimmer (although there are swimmers with huge muscle mass, unlike Nadal).

Nadal's upper body is pretty thick and muscular as far as tennis players go, IMO.

As stated, they are all solid with their legs.

Imagine if he had a six-pack! Slam no. 20 would be in the bag already by now. Do you think Nadal will ever get a 6-pack so that he can win more Slams easily?

Personally I believe Federer consumes to many sickspacks.
He's got this protruding belly which you just don't see much with professional athletes.
But to compensate, he's probably snoring cocain like a maniac with these huge nostrils of him.

I haven't seen photos of Rafa lifting weights, but I have seen him using different strength-training equipment. He likes playing tennis more than to train in the gym, but he has worked hard in the gym.

It's Rafa's personal gym (men behind Rafa are Rafael Maymó, physiotherapist, and Joan Forcades, physical trainer):

    Know....
Most pro athletes want some fat around the midsection, and some over all the other body parts.
Helps with resistance against germs, helps with a more even level of play, and is always better than the "ripped 6 pack" guys, who only look like that for ONE day, posing for pictures and doing nothing.

At the AO it's pretty common to have them walk past you on the way to a match or to practice (especially in the first few days).

My first impression was that they should all be playing basketball (I'm 5'11). They looked just like normal people, but bigger!

Pretty much all the guys have very unbalanced forearm development.

Individual observations - Andy Murray is taller than he looks on tv.

Kei Nishikori is another one who seems taller than his listed height.

Tommy Haas has extremely low bodyfat. He is quite a skinny guy with bodybuilder level muscle definition.

    Serena Williams is enormous.

Sabine Lisicki is much more attractive in person than she appears on tv.

Nobody can wear a pair of tights like Andrea Petkovic. She is a very pretty girl with a flawless figure.

I saw djokovic in a Davis cup match last year and looks even thinner than on TV. As the other posters mentioned already his forearms are developed immensely compared to other body parts.

Nadal looks taller in the flesh than he looks on TV. Murray is the tallest of the Big 4 and Djokovic doesn't look quite as skinny as he looks on TV. It's amazing how close they all are to their TV image.

I'm not just saying this because I'm a fan, but Nadal is the most imposing of them all. He is the guy you would turn round to take a 2nd look at if he walked past you. Murray also has an imposing presence. The others would blend easily in a crowd if you didn't know who they were. I've seen many of them close up in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. AD is a small venue and has easy access to practice sessions etc. And autograph sessions are arranged for fans at both AD and Dubai. Last year, in Abu Dhabi, I had a media pass so I was in their pressers and had a very good close up view of them. I was also in Doha in January.

I have been close to a lot of pros at the former world team cup. saw roddick, haas and some spanish guys too.

it's true that they all have massive calves. I have also been quite close to some MLB players. the most impressive I have seen from close were some discus throwers. just freaking HUGE, they where like 6"7 and probably close to 300 pounds of solid muscle.

Have sat court side a couple times. Nishikori definitely looks taller in real life.
All the players look skinnier than on tv. The old 20lbs phrase I guess. Serena looks ripped. Venus looks rail for example.

Spent the night with 4 ATP pros.

They all had really big ....................................feet. No, I am not talking about Pam Shriver.

Didn't notice much else as Jenny Fleming was sitting opposite. And Pete divorced her? Seriously? How is that possible? She takes your breath away.

You think people have perfect lives, McEnroe's double partner, married to Jenny, but it all ends in sh*t. You see something perfect, and you want the dream to be real, but that's life I guess.

Yes, stood next to Federer and Djokovic. The thing that struck me about Federer was how EXTREMELY skinny he looks in person. Dude has very little body fat compared to normal people (though normal people in America, even "thin" people are quite fat, so my perspective might be skewed). His cheeks look quite bony and his arms are like sticks. Djokovic looks quite muscular in person (especially his calves), at least moreso than on TV, and he's also stick thin. Both are pretty much exactly their billed height, Fed looks a bit taller than 6'1, Novak looks taller because of how thin he is.

Just fyi, don't hate Fed fanboiz: Fed comes off as kind of a jerk in person. He just got out from the ESPN booth at Cincy, so I heard the end of his tv interview with Pam Shriver et al. He definitely puts on a false air of humility for the camera, in person he's more gruff or aloof in a regal kind of way. Though maybe one can't really blame him since he has to deal with hordes of fans wanting his autograph all the time.

Novak is definitely more "chill" in person, warmer and more affable with his fans. Not sure why people say he needs to work to get attention, there were also swarms of autograph-hunters around him wherever he went.

No. Federer is miles broader across the shoulders than Nadal. If you stood next to Federer you would be amazed - he is almost freakishly broad across the shoulders compared to the vast majority of people.

He is also a lot bigger than most people think... His legs especially. People always talk about what a beast Tsonga is.... well check his legs out compared to Federer's. Tsonga has skinnier legs.

Muscle weighs heavier than fat, all boils down to bodyfat % you could have two different guys with same height and weight but different physiques depending on bf% look at bodybuilding, prime example.

The most striking feature about tennis players is the broad shoulders.

TV close-ups of Rogi while receiving serve really emphasize that broad shoulder feature of him.

BTW, which Aussie vet is that standing between Rafter and Rogi? Sedgman? He's looking good for 86 if that's who it is!
