In a nice little piece of historical symmetry,:

2007: 3rd round of the Rome Masters, Italian player Filippo Volandri beats world #1 Roger Federer by the score of 6-2,6-4.

2017: 2nd round of the Rome Masters, Italian player Fabio Fognini beats world #1 Andy Murray by the score of 6-2,6-4.

Who says history can't be neat and tidyish? ;)

Both their names begin and end with the same letter. That is the most important pattern, no ? ;) ;)

Did it happen in 1997 as well?

Edit: nope, looks like Courier beat Sampras, who was the defending champion that year as well
