Say you have 2 identical rackets, like the aeropro drive and the plus version - where is the extra .5 inches? Is it in the handle? If it is, would an extended length be advantageous if you have big hands and a two-handed backhand?

Yes, it's in the handle. I've heard from multiple sources that it gives an advantage to the 2hbh.

The nice thing about XL is that you can always choke up on it if there's a particular stroke that you prefer with an SL frame

I wouldn't say it gives two-handers an 'advantage', but it is most definitely more comfortable for those who don't like their index finger wrapping around the frame as opposed to the handle.
