We always see the mulitude of famous people who are very good golfers via pro-am events, but what about tennis?

What high-profile people (actors, musicians, politicians, business titans, pro athletes in other sports, media figures, etc.) regularly play tennis AND are pretty good at it (maybe strong 4.0 and above).

Actor John Lovitz is huge tennis enthusiast and player, but don't know how good he is.

I saw some Tennis Channel thing with singer/actress Brandy. She seemed to love tennis, but didn't seem that good at it yet.

I can't think of a really good famous/celeb tennis player off the top of my head (other than ex pro tennis players).

does 'film star' Minka count? not joking, she was part of some winning USTA league a while back(there was a deleted thread on it)
apparently she was a highly ranked junior in Vietnam or something.
google her name(if you're not at work)

I think the girl from Big Bang Theory was nationally ranked as a junior(but I would think her tennis days are over after shattering her leg in a horseback riding accident)

the best celebrity tennis players are probably people that used to be really good at it before giving it up, which is not uncommon(have encountered many former D1 players or ranked juniors that haven't hit a ball in many years)
The most passionate rec players are generally people who were never that good or found it later in life, so that's partly why tennis channel can only find crappy celeb players to profile.

isn't there a member from the 'metallica' band who was good at tennis when he was young ?

(i guess it's not allowed to answer 'movie star vijay amritraj', right ?) ;)

Certainly, there are many more hack celeb golfers than non-hacks. I guess watching something like the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, I always see a decent number of celeb golfers (even if it's just 7-10) with decent handicaps. True, they are very much in the minority, but I guess I see this as a decent number when compared to tennis because I've never even seen 3 good celeb tennis players together at one time.

well, his dad was a pro player(Lars Ulrich)

but like I said, I doubt he plays it much anymore. though he probably could destroy Dr Phil & Jon Lovitz with no prep.

There's Bode Miller (skier), who tried to qualify for the USO wildcard ... failed spectacularly though.

    Lars' dad was Torben Ulrich.

I remember reading an interview with Lars where he said he was a top 10 junior in Denmark but then when they moved to California he wasn't even the tenth best player on his block

Actress Maeve Quinlan played pro tennis as a teenager.

Matthew Perry was nationally ranked in Canada as a junior.

Former Congressman and Seattle Seahawk Steve Largent played a lot of tennis since retiring from the NFL and in the mid-90's went to 5.0 Nationals.

And I recall reading a story a while back about Drew Brees playing against Roddick as a junior.

One of the guys in Iron Maiden (Adrian Smith) is pretty decent

There is some footage on one of their tour videos of him playing with Pat Cash. Cash was asked how good he was and replied 'a lot better than I am at guitar!'

Cash is actually a pretty decent guitarist, too..

    anyway, here you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOgnhkNEuFY

Wasn't there a thread on Dirk Nowitzki a while back? IIRC he looked pretty decent although his technique wasn't exactly pretty.

Actor, Dick Van Patten, and his son, Vincent Van Patten (also an actor) are/were avid tennis players. Vince was go good that he was ranked as high as #26 on the pro tour in 1982. He beat John McEnroe and other top 10 players:

Singer/actor (and military pilot) Dean Paul Martin was a very decent tennis player. He was the son of noted singer/entertainer, Dean Martin. Dean Paul was apparently very athletic and played at Wimbledon as a junior player.

He starred in a film, Players , with Ali McGraw in 1979 as a pro tennis player. The movie featured Pancho Gonzalez, as his coach, as well as quite few other notable players -- J McEnroe, Vilas, Nastase and others. Dean Paul displayed some excellent athleticism in this film -- diving at the net for the ball a number of times. This may have inspired a young Boris Becker to do the same thing some years later.

I play tennis with Geddy Lee of Rush, and occasionally with Alex Lifeson his guitarist. Both are quite good, Geddy plays more consistently. Geddy is very competitive.

I knew there was some reason I liked her, and not just for her looks.

    Bazinga!

But seriously that's pretty cool. I guess she made the right decision going for acting. Probably get's paid several million per season of Big Bang Theory. That's much better than grinding it out on the WTA Tour.

Dirk Nowitzki was like a junior national champion in Germany. He played Tommy Haas when they were growing up.

Here's a video of him hitting now. He still has pretty impressive racket head speed, considering he probably hasn't played consistently since he was in his teens.
