Hello fellow TWers! I would like to propose an idea for a Fantasy Tennis league for all on TW. I know many of you already participate in the various games we have around here, I'm hoping this can be something different and something similar to the Fantasy Football (American) and Fantasy Football (European) leagues some of you may have participated in. Here is my idea:

    RULES:
-This will be a 10 person league.

-Each person picks 10 ATP players for their team through a rotating selection process where if a person gets to pick first one 'match' and 10th the next; the person that picked 2nd then picks 1st; and so on.

-Each 'match' you pick one person from the top 10; one person from 11-20; one person 21-30; and so on until you complete your roster of 10.

-For each scheduled 'match' as listed below, a person would designate 5 starters for each match (more on that later).

-For 'matches' with multiple weeks of tourneys, you can change your starting 5 before every new week.

-These players would be scored based on match wins in certain events, and the score would go towards your team in a head to head matchup against another member's team, similar to the aforementioned Fantasy games.

    -SCORING:
    250 Match Win = +2.5 points
    250 Title = +3 points
Davis Cup Match Win = +3 points
    500 Match Win = +4 points
    500 Title = +5 points
    1000 Match Win = +5 points
    1000 Title = +10 points
GS Match Win = +7 points
    GS Title = +15 points
    Bagel Given/Eaten = +/- 2 points
    Breadstick Given/Eaten = +/- 1 point

Here is a rough outline of what the schedule for the 'matches' would be for the 2012 season.

    Match 1 - Jan 1-15 (Doha, etc)
    Match 2 – Jan 16-29 (Aussie Open)
    Match 3 – Jan 30-Feb 19 (Davis Cup 1R, etc)
    Match 4 – Feb 20-Mar 4 (Dubai, etc)
    Match 5 – Mar 5 – Mar 18 (Indian Wells)
    Match 6 – Mar 19 – Apr 1 (Miami)
    Match 7 – Apr 2 – Apr 15 (Davis Cup QF, etc)
    Match 8 – Apr 16 – May 6 (Monte Carlo, etc)
    Match 9 – May 7 – May 27 (Madrid, Rome, etc)
    Match 10 – May 28 – June 10 (Roland Garros)
Match 11 – June 11-24 (Queens, Halle, etc)
    Match 12 – June 25 – July 2 (Wimbledon)
    Match 13 – July 9 – July 22 (Hamburg, etc)
    Match 14 – July 23 – Aug 5 (Olympics, Washington, etc)
Match 15 – Aug 6-26 (Toronto, Cincy, Winston Salem)
    Match 16 – Aug 27-Sep 9 (US Open)
Match 17 – Sept 10-Sept 31 (Davis Cup SF, etc)

Semifinals (Top 4)– Oct 1-21 (Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, etc)
Finals – Oct 22-29 (Basel, Valencia, Paris)

Given this schedule you would play every person in the league at least twice, and one person 3 times.

This is my brainchild and as such it might be a little rough around the edges, hopefully at least some of you would be interested in something like this as well as helping work out any kinks that may arise. If this interests you, feel free to respond, or if you think this is a god awful idea, feel free to respond as well. :)

Thanks for the feedback (good and bad lol) on this guys. Hopefully we can hold the draft sometime next week, just got to figure out how to set it up. I could start a separate thread on here or we could pull the old TW Chat out of retirement. It would be a snake style draft, random order of course. And if someone doesn't make a pick in a certain amount of time they would get the highest ranked player available, something like that. Like I said, still working out the kinks, so if you guys have any ideas feel free to post them.

    Sounds nice, I'm in.

    One thing though:

So the top four posters who go to the semi's will face off based on results in the Asian Swing/European Indoor Hardcourt tourneys listed above? Wouldn't that kind of skew everyone's draft choices if the whole shebang comes down to indoor hardcourt events at the end of the fantasy season?

I'm confused, does that mean that one really needs to get one of the top 4 slots? I'm not sure that it would play that well where the top 10, and particularly the top 4 are so strong. I think the hard part is that unlike football, soccer, or baseball there just aren't that many players and it could easily be a done deal given the initial draw.

Not necessarily. Just like in the NFL you take all things into consideration, but still want to pick who you think will be most consistent throughout the whole year in order to get to the Playoffs. Just picking indoor specialists wont matter if you don't have a good enough record to make the playoffs. I really want the entire season to matter, and I know that the end of the season is when guys go lame, just like in the NFL/fantasy football you have injuries and guys sitting out at the end of the season.

So far this is the list I have (note - not the draft order):
    1. jbf
    2. TopFH
    3.Eternity
    4.joeri888
    5.JayChu
    6.gramdacious
    7.PSNELKE
    8.kishnabe
    9.Walenty
    10.wings56
    Alt: FEDERERNADAL13, flyinghippos101, jhutch

Also, as far as trades, you are only allowed to have 10 players on your team max at any given time. So if you trade away 1 of your players and get back 2, you have to drop 1 of your other players in order to make space on your team. Max 4 trades in a year.

The same rule applies to 'free agents', guys who aren't selected in the draft but may have a surprisingly good season like Boggy, Raonic, or Tomic did this year. If you want to pick up a player, you have to drop one, and the teams with the worse records have priority.

OK, so I would like to have the draft before the New Year (obviously). If everyone's a go on this, we can have it sometime in the middle of next week. What is everyone's (mainly the 10 guys listed) availability?

I'm kinda interested but given the much smaller size pool of players it seems like a straight out draw would be unfair. It seems like a random selection for all peeps would be best. That way, it would be fair to all.

Hmm...that sounds interesting. I just don't want people to feel like they got gipped, plus just like the other fantasy leagues have drafts, this one could as well. The main difference I guess is that in tennis the top 4 are pretty consistent year in and year out. What does everyone else think?

I just seem to think that if it's a round robin choice, then one of the top 4 draws will win. Like I said, tennis doesn't have the pool that any of the other sports that do this do. So it seems almost like it's random for each of the top "x" that equates to the number of folks in it. The same for each successive grouping. Sure someone could randomly get the 1, 11th, 21st....(given 10 people entering), but not as likely.

But you're forgetting, just because you have 1 strong player you still have to get contributions from the other 4 or else someone with 5 good players can beat a team with 1 great player and 4 losers. Now that I think of it, I may take down the bonus for winning tourneys because of this. Reward depth over strength at the top of your team.

I think that the idea is good, but that tennis is just a slightly different beast than other sports. I do like the idea of making a team effort of every tournament.

I've given fantasy tennis a lot of thought in the past (because I'm trying to develop a website around it) - and if you're going to do it like fantasy football (a roster with players on it) - you're going to need to limit the roster size so that it works with the size of draws that exist at the tournaments throughout the year. Doing it like football, with 16 players (8 starting/8 bench) would be too many. You'd need to do something more like 4 starters/4 bench and also figure out if you'd want to include doubles teams or just singles players.

The easier (and more competitive) way is to let all teams select from all players each week (or 2 weeks for a major) and create a roster for each tournament and track prize money won. Prize money won by your players = prize money for your team.

The kicker? You can only put any one player on your roster a certain number of times/tournaments per year. Something like 5 or 6 times. So you couldn't choose Fed/Nadal/Djoker/Murray every week - you'd have to save them for the majors.

OK so I've thought about it and here are some tweaks I've thought of:

-Instead of a draft, we could do a rotating selection process where if a person gets to pick first one 'match' and 10th the next; the person that picked 2nd then picks 1st; and so on.
-Each 'match' you pick one person from the top 10; one person from 11-20; one person 21-30; and so on until you complete your roster of 10.
-For 'matches' with multiple weeks of tourneys, you can change your starting 5 before every new week.

    Thoughts?

You might want to think it through a little more - draft order is usually something that's randomly set (picking names out of a hat sorta). Rotating it just seems confusing to me.

I guess by your "match" definition you're limiting this league to 10 teams?

What do you mean by "matches with multiple weeks of tourneys" ? the 4 majors?

I think it's inherently harder to do a draw like this in tennis since there aren't a lot of top guys. The choice of folks is pretty small compared to other sports.

Look at the proposed schedule. Some of the match 'weeks' have only one tourney, i.e. the 4 slams, IW, and Miami. Others have multiple weeks of tourneys, like Toronto one week and Cincy the next week, within a match. So if a player wanted to switch their lineup of 5 before the next week of tourneys within a match, they could.

It's not like the top 4 are going to do well at every tourney. Yeah they usually do well at the slams, but remember, it's a lineup of 5 PLAYERS. Just because you have one guy that does well, you can still lose if your other 4 players flame out early compared to the person you are playing.

I really want to do this, and feel like it would work out ok. It seems like everyone else thinks it's pointless since apparently it's tennis and the depth isn't there, even though guys pop up all of the time and make surprise runs in the slams from outside of the top 4.

Those who posted earlier and said you were interested, post again if you're still interested and I'll start getting the draft set up over the next few days.

+1. This should be run like an F1 fantasy - you get a budget, the drivers each have a price; the pricing is tiered based on the drivers' past performance. So many people can own Vettel (who won almost everything) - the winner would be the guy who spent the rest of his money the best.

The other option. Just like the Draw Challenge, except do ALL tournaments - or maybe all the majors, 1000's, and 500's. All the players have to be ready to make their picks in the limited time before the matches start - and the host has to spend the time to keep score.

But good luck to those going with JB's game.

I'm still interested in doing this by the rules I last amended. If the interest is still there, we can make our choices as soon as Friday for the first few tourneys of the year. Just everyone who's still interested, post here and I'll throw your name in the hat for the draft.

6 spots taken then, 4 left. I'll set the draft order up once the league gets filled, start a separate thread for you all to place your selections in the Pro Results section with all the other games, and get things rolling within the next few days.

Just so you know this is above the board, this is the site I'll use to randomize order. Remember, if you pick 1st this time, you pick 10th next time (AO) so you might wanna hope to end up in the middle of the pack for the first few matches.
