Well, 2012 was pretty damn good, so I thought I might make a thread to discuss everybody's favorite (and least favorite) things about 2012

Also, link to a 2012 prediction thread made at the beginning of the year. Always fun to look back (http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=407701)

Favorites: Every GS Final, Murray winning a GS and OG, Fed defying age to win a GS, Nadal getting some revenge against Novak

Least Favorite: Murray losing the Wimbledon Final, Nadal missing half the year (hard to believe we haven't seen him play since June)

I liked Federer's resurgence, played so much better than in 2010, 2011. Wimbledon 2012 was my favourite moment of the year.

The AO was also memorable with Djokovic winning 2 5 setters in a row (5 hours vs Murray, 6 hours vs Nadal).

Murray's emotional win at the Olympics was nice to see and I'm glad he finally won his first major.

WTF was also entertaining, especially the final.

Clay season was pretty boring to me, Nadal is just too good and it has become too predictable, the only entertaining part was everyone whining about the blue clay :)

Fed getting Wimby #7, Murray finally getting a slam. Fed getting #1 back and smashing the previous record.

Going to Cincy and watching Rogi own in the 2nd round.

    I hope 2013 can compete! :)

The only thing I liked about 2012 was seeing Andy finally win a slam. He deserved it,and finally got it.

I'd just say that on the whole 2012 has been one of my favourite tennis seasons.

Finally having 4 different slam winners with all of them being great players in their own right was just awesome.

This year was a great year for tennis - especially Murray's first major and Federer winning Wimbledon again - but one thing that stood out was how utterly crap the claycourt season has become.

It is just monotonous, mindless tennis for the most part which is a poor spectacle compared to the rest of the calendar. It actually made the variety that random blue clay threw into the mix a refreshing change - if only because it forced players to adjust.

    Favorite parts:

-Federer winning Wimbledon and getting back to no 1, also winning 3 Masters which is almost as many as he won in 2008-2011 combined.

-The fact that we had 4 different major champions instead of 1 (or 2) which made the season very interesting

-Nadal missing 6 months of the season which pretty much means that he won't get back to the top 2 until 2013 is done and dusted

-a new face that could mess up in the rankings next year - that is Janowicz

-blue clay introduced which was a fresh experience

    -Nadal being upset by Rosol

    Least favorite parts:

-Djokovic being screwed up in the French open final, he was in the middle of an epic comeback before they had to stop

-Federer losing the Gold medal match at the Olympics

-The fact that players ranked 8th and lower have absolutely nothing to say against the top guys

-The fact that the tour is still mostly a grindfest. Is it too much to ask to have at least 2-3 big tournaments where you don't have to grind to win?

    1. Federer winning Wimbledon
    2. Federer finally edging out Sampras's 286 to get to an unprecedented 300+ weeks at #1
    3. Murray winning his first Slam. Been looking forward to it ever since AO, 2010
    4. Murray winning Gold for Britain at Wimbledon. Was hoping for a Federer win but this was the next best thing. And it's not like Federer walked away empty-handed
    5. Del Potro crying tears of joy after winning Bronze for his country
    6. Nadal putting Djokovic in his place at Roland Garros
    7. Djokovic backing up his insane year with another really good one

I liked this season. We got monumental upsets, great comebacks, and some epic matches coupled with the low points of people retiring.

My favorite things were the upsets. We got Rosol and his absolutely brilliant fifth set against Nadal, Marray/Nielsen shocking the entire world of doubles tennis and taking the Wimbledon crown, Patrik Rosenholm showing what potential he has defeating Monfils (shame so few people saw that match), Jerzy Janowicz' rise to fame at the Paris Masters, and Andy Murray FINALLY winning a slam. I almost forgot about the comeback kid (well, he's not really a kid anymore) Brian Baker, who went on to show that giving up is futile.

Also, BLUE CLAY, I WANT YOU BACK!!! Really, the best surface of the last few years. Beautiful and fast.

There are probably some other moments, like the Tsonga-Raonic match at the Olympics (liked that one for its insanity), and Team GB in the mixed doubles (too bad that Laura couldn't keep her nerves at bay at the end, but she played superbly)

Disapppointments were the retirements. My favorite players both said thank you and good-bye at the US Open, then another slam winner went in Ferrero, probably the last real flamboyant top player of the last few years in Gonzo (we lost two racquet smashers this year!) and finally Ljubo. A bit disappointed in Rosol aswell. He had every opportunity to capitalize on the second round victory against Nadal and promtly went away in the next round.

    Oh, the AO final. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

EDIT: HOW COULD I FORGET ROBIN? I hope he's back early next year and demolishes Rafa at the FO again!

    Highlights of 2012:
    - Longest and most dramatic AO final ever
    - Nadal re-owns clay in style (and with panache).
    - Fed defies his age and wins a slam
    - Murray wins his 1st slam and Olympics in front of home crowd.
    - Djoko gets POTY for the second consecutive year.

    Favourite (in chronological order):

    1. Nadal almost winning the AO, narrowly losing to Djokovic instead of previous year's beatdowns.
    2. John Isner making his first Masters final (at IW).
    3. Nadal regaining his clay dominance over Djokovic at MC,Rome and the FO.
    4. Djokovic making his first FO final.
    5. Murray making his first Wimbledon final.
    6. Federer winning Wimbledon, his first Slam title in 2 and a half years.
    7. Murray winning the Olympic gold medal.
    8. Murray winning the USO, his first Slam title.
    9. Kei Nishikori becoming the first Japanese player to win Tokyo.
    10. Del Potro winning Basel and recording his first win over Federer this year in 7 attempts.
    11. Jerzy Janowicz becoming the first qualifier to make a Masters final since Harel Levy in 2000.
    12. Ferrer winning Paris-Bercy, his first Masters 1000 title.
    13. Djokovic winning his second WTF title in London.

    Least favourite (in chronological order):

    1. Murray losing first match at IW.
    2. Murray losing final of Miami.
    3. Nadal and Djokovic losing early in Madrid and then saying they wouldn't play it again unless the blue clay was changed back to red.
    3. Djokovic losing final of FO.
    4. Murray losing opening match at Queens.
    5. Nalbandian kicking a linesman in the final of Queens and getting disqualified.
    6. Nadal losing in 2nd round of Wimbledon.
    7. Nadal disappearing from the tour indefinitely since losing at Wimbledon.
    8. Murray losing Wimbledon final.
    9. Murray losing to Chardy in 3rd round of Cincinnati.
10.The weather delays at the USO.
    11. The retirements of Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters at the USO.
    10. Murray's failure to convert 8 match points in 3 consecutive tournaments especially 5 in the final of Shanghai.
    11. Murray failing to make the final of the WTF.
12.The stupid decision of the ATP to play the Paris Masters and the WTF back to back for the first time which meant that most players either pulled out of Paris (Federer) or tanked early to get ready for London (Djokovic, Murray, Del Potro, Berdych, Tsonga?).

One of my favorite moments was when Halle had four one handed backhanders through to the SFs... I thought that was interesting to me. Great to see that they aren't a dying breed.

Also I was happy to see Tommy Haas make a comeback. I wasn't sure he was gonna beat Roger in Halle but he surprised me and others for sure.

I should add that one of the interesting facts about this year's WTF was that it was the first time since 2004 that all 4 semi-finalists were GS winners!

I loved watching Federer win Wimbledon again. It was perfect.

I also loved Rosol beating Nadal at Wimbledon, Murray nabbing his first slam, and Janowicz taking down several big names in a row to make the Paris final. I'm very glad Del Potro's back in the top ten, qualified for the WTF, and made it to the semifinals there. There's probably more - it was an exciting year for tennis - but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Really? Sometimes I think Federer is a lot of what is wrong with tennis. Not a fan of the whole elitist aura that he exudes. Though I can see how some see it as more of a classical look.

I thought it was perfect. Nole was the most consistent player and deserved number one in the end. I loved Federer getting his seventh Wimbledon, even if he had to cut out Murray's heart. But Murray rebounded well with the Gold Medal and U.S. Open. And I'm not a big Rafa guy, but seven RG is ridiculous. Del Potro reasserting himself and some nice runs from Ferrer and Berdych also made it a great year.

    1. Federer getting back to #1 at 31 years old
    2. A new star in Jerzy Janowicz
    3. A new grand slam champion(Murray), and a new Masters 1000 champ(Ferrer) after so long.

    4. Speaking of that...Ferrer winning a 250, 500, and a 1000 in one year, seven titles, which lead all of tennis, four semis, and getting to at least the quarters in every grand slam(and two semis there), not to mention a hair away from medaling in doubles. After the Davis Cup, he will also lead all of tennis in wins, and titles and third in win percentage. This is what hard work is all about.

    5. Michael Russell, at 34 years old, getting to his first ATP semi. That's also what hard work gets you.

    6. The up and coming talent of Japanese tennis. Kei Nishikori(25 to 19), Go Soeda(120 to 58), Yuichi Sugita(235 to 122) and Tatsuma Ito(117 to 66). Love watching all four guys.

    7. Tommy Haas resurgence

    8. Watching Serena Williams light a firecracker up her ass and become invincible again after losing to someone with the worst serve in history, and flabby legs. When you see that kind of dominance, it's called work ethic.

    9. The fun week of Michael Llodra.

    10. Nadal breaking Borg's record.

    Worst
    _____
    1. DY having a coach and getting to 39 in the world, then for whatever damned reason, he goes back to Mommy and Daddy and goes all the way down to 190 and losing in the first down on Challengers.

    2. Lukas Rosol. Not because he beat Nadal(congrats to that), but he didn't follow up and he got whacked in the next round.

    3. John Isner getting to 9 in the world by actually playing something resembling an all around tennis game(including the net), then going back to being the amazing serving giraffe and nothing else. It's like he accepted the Djoker and Federer wins and got complacent.

    4. Jack Sock's one year body transformation from lithe and lean to FAT!

    5. The amazing amount of retirements from players that retired just because "they didn't have it that day". I'd say there's a number of those every year, but it feels like there were a lot more this year.

    6. Bernard Tomic's amazing technicolor tank job at the Open.

Cvac is a different player now,and Nadal is a lot worse. Cvac blew it because he should have won that match, especially with the way he dominates Nadal on all surfaces. That's why I feel it was a one off,and won't be repeated.

Not to be hating, but Nadal-Rosol actually was one of my favourite moments of the year. It was 1) a great match 2) the biggest upset in years 3) finally something REALLY unpredictable (probably only Clarky picked that one). That Nadal was out for that long afterwards wasn't one of my favourites though.

i actually cheered louder when Rosol beat Nadal than I did when Federer beat Murray.

Is it possible I hate Nadal more than I like Federer?

    2. Ferrer winning a masters shield
    3. Delpos strong indoor season, Olympic Bronze and WTF Semi
    4. Nadals 7th French Open
    5. Haas's resurgence back to the top 20 after a slow start
    6. Fed winning Wimby (altho I was really pulling for Murray it being wimby), and reaching #1
    7. Isners Davis cup victories over Switzerland (epic Fed match) and France
8.Berdych making US Open semis (not that he beat Fed really, but after his Wimbledon loss itwas a nice bounce back for him)
    9. Nishi winning his home event
    10. Fishs recovery from heart surgery and 4th round run at Wimby after the layoff
    11. Venus Williams road back and winning Olympic gold in dubs after her diagnosis and getting to #25
    12. Bryan Brothers Olympic Gold
    13. Bakers minor breakout on clay

    Least Fav
    1. All the players who retired: Kim, A-Rod, Gonzo, Ljubicic
    2. Blue clay (just weird and random in my opinion)
    3. Murrays clay season slumping
    4. Nadals injury (him being out makes draws a lil less dramatic to follow)
    5. Donald Youngs horrible play (I am not a fan but a lot of hype and time went into him)
    6. Bhupathi and Bopanna being told they cannot play DC for India
    7. Berdy being his usual Yoyo self
    8. Weird/Stupid scheduling decisions (you know what I mean)
    9. Nalby being over emotional and costing himself a match
    10. Bryans bombing at the WTF

Federer winning Wimbledon, Murray winning his first slam and Nadal missing half the year.

Hard to say which is better. Murray winning the Olympics and US Open or Nadal missing half the year. I also liked Djokovic owning Fed in his favorite tournament.

Favourite: (not in order but so many):
Nadal's 7th FO and great clay season (excluding Madrid :) )
Murray's Olympic Gold and USO win
Djokovic winning AO, Shanghai (great match) and WTF as well as ending the year no.1
AO Final (Djokovic is a beast)
Any Djokovic match where he saves match points
    Nishikori winning the Japan Open
    Serena dominating the WTA tour
    Vika winning the AO
Federer winning Wimbledon (I could have just said 4 different slam winners lol)
    Jerzy Janowicz
    M&M winning the WTF doubles

    Least Favourite:
The players who retired this year, I'll miss you A-rod
Nadal missing half of the year :\
Murray and this trend of losing matches whilst holding match points
Flukas Rosol, he deserved the win but has shown us nothing since then
Tsonga, he has disappointed me this year :(
And Wawrinka's epic tank in the 3rd set of that Shanghai match with Roger, as a fan I had to stop watching at 4-0

You mean Federer 'owning' Djokovic in his favourite tournament right?

My favourite part about the old prediction thread - Breakout player: Bernard Tomic.

Federer getting to #1, breaking Sampras' record and winning another Grand Slam, which happens to be Wimbledon! Also Federer winning an Olympic singles medal is nice, although gold would've been better... Nishikori played a good tournament in Japan. Too bad he keeps getting injured. Loved how Janowicz surprised everyone at the Paris masters. I guess it's a good thing that top 4 each won 1 GS this year, you don't see that happen often. Ferrer winning a ms1000 is nice too. Czech winning the davis cup, beating Spain, which is the most dominant tennis nation at the moment.

Also, it was nice to see Nadal out for half a year because you could see how the field looks without Nadal there.
