What planet are you on? She's lost weight (and muscle), btw. By that logic, Serena's too fat to be winning majors in both singles and doubles. Or Woz is too good to lose 3 Fed Cup doubles matches so far.

Pavy is a set down against Cornet, what is wrong with the Russians?

Also, Pavlychenkova needs a fitness coach asap.

Mattek-Sands deserved the set for attacking the net like Chuck Norris.

She plays in the team for the right to participate in the 2012 Olympics. One match is enough for that.

Kuz up a set and up a break 3-2 in the 2nd.

Kuz having a headcase moment... 2 UEs while up 40-0 to now deuce... but 2 strong serves gets her to hold 4-2.

Kuz getting a little mad, but she's been the steadier player so far.

    Razzano 37UE
    Kuz 25UE

If Kuz wins this its likely to be Safina and ??? in the doubles?
    Can't see Maria playing doubles.

If Kuz wins in straights I would put her in doubles. Pav and Ma$ha don't strike me as suitable doubles players, though Pav would be the lesser of two evils in such a case.

Kuzzy blew a 40-15 lead and gets broken. 4-4 Razzano to serve. "Bad Kuzzy" coming out, so Kuz had better win this set.
Razzano is broken at love. Kuz to serve for match 5-4.
    MP....DEUCE!
    MP 2.... Kuz wins!

France and Russia are tied 2-2 with the doubles deciding it all...

^^^ You can make changes 1 hour prior to the match. But yeah I'm surprised by this move.

Safina came here for nothing. I wonder how Dinara feels... Then again both Sveta and Nastya won their matches. Dinara probably would have played if it was a dead rubber. Still Nastya and Sveta haven't really played doubles together which could make it interesting.

Parmentier got replaced by Cornet. Basically 4 singles players playing doubles to decide it all....

Pav is just sloooow and chunky. But she's packs a punch with her groundies.

Good bad and ugly from Kuz in the 1st game. They had 2 BP chances, but France somehow holds for 1-0.

    On serve. France up 2-1.

Pav's and Cornet's serves will be attacked quite a bit, I suspect.

France breaks Pav's serve to lead 3-1. Consolidates the break for 4-1.

Kuz hasn't been that great in doubles in a long time. I forgot Kuz won the 2005 AO double's title. Pav is only #61 in doubles.

Safina's pulled through for Russia in doubles before so I'm really surprised she got left off for this one. Marat actually came to this Fed Cup tie. Maybe he came to see Kuz as well. Rumor was he was dating Kuz back in 2009.

I just got back. I assumed the French would take the 1st set. I forgot this is WTA we're dealing with...

6-5 France. Russia serving to stay in set.

Safina is 5-0 in Fed Cup doubles and got left off.... SMH! Both Kuz and Pav look a bit awkward at the net.

If I were Tarpischev (sp) I would not have played Safina, but it was quite possibly his biggest decision of the weekend. However she has obiously proven herself in deciding rubbers so it must have been tough to decide. Im glad Masha is not playing as she is Russia's weak link as far as doubles. She played with Miryni at the USO one year, and has no net awareness whatsoever.

It would have been good for her (Dinara)if she were able to get a win though for her confidence.

A weeks training in Russia with Masha/Sveta & Nastya (x2) would have been good for her too.

EDIT: Russia has taken the 1st set on a Tiebreak.

Russia is jumping all over the French in the 2nd. On the verge of going 3-0. Won 15 straight pts.

5-0 Russia. The French team is pulling a Vichy France.....

    2MP.....
    1MP....
DEUCE.. France trying to make this a Waterloo...
1 MP.. Cornet muffed an easy volley.
PAV smashes it away. Russia advances!!!

7-6 6-0. Russia went 3-0 today to move on.

Well the USA got thrashed 4-1...saw that coming. If Kim hadn't been playing for Belgium they might have had a chance, but even then who knows. Mattek-Sands actually didn't play terribly in the singles rubbers, she got a set off Kim and played a little tight against Wickmayer. She wasn't great, but she was amazing compared to Oudin, who just had nothing really. Huber and King winning, I called that as our only point to. Even without Kim the way Oudin played, I still don't think we would have won.

Given that the USA is out, it puts the Williams in a bit of a bind for the Olympics, I don't think they have made themselves available to play Fed Cup since the 2008 Olympics, unless I'm wrong? Were they actually at the tie? If they weren't they are going to need to be present at the world group playoffs and this time next year if they want to meet Olympic Selection Qualifications

I'm suprised that Italy thrashed Australia 4-1, while I was thinking Italy would probably win I was also thinking it would be closer and that if a shocker was gonna happen it was going to be in this tie, instead the France Russia one was the dramatic one. The matches were close, but I am surprised Pennetta pulled it out against Stosur and the Italians won the doubles...wow

Russia v France...Soy did a great job summarizing that one up.

the Czechs vs the Slovaks...I wasn't even following that one..I am a little sad the Czechs one, I was pulling for Slovakia. Looks like Kvitova was the hero of that one with 2 pretty convincing looking wins. What happened to Cibulkova...did she quit after realizing they couldn't win? I have never even heard of Cepelova, but she appeared to give Safarova a tough time before she retired then her and Rybarikova beat Peschke and Strycova????? That I can't believe either...that was the one match I was sure the Czechs would win no matter who Slovakia put up

Hello all. No one be as stupid as me and buy a daily pass from the FedCup site in the future. The dbags charged me twice (site froze on the credit card screen and then reloaded after a message about their servers), and after all that, they didn't have the link active to the Australia-Italy matches because they were asleep at the wheel (which were the reasons I paid and wanted to watch), and kept it inactive and listed as 'upcoming' while all those matches were going on. That's what you get for trying to go at this the legit way I suppose.

More WS controversy. Going into the Fed Cup final, the US claimed the WS made themselves available for the final but that injuries forced them to miss. Team USA claimed the WS participated with the team in a way that qualifies them for the Olympics. Hopefully the olympic Committee will call BS on that claim. Venus and Serena weren't even in San Diego during the time of the Fed Cup final.

Well actually if they were on the roster but not selected by MJ Fernandez then it technically does count as having fulfilled the requirement. However I don't know if they were ever officially on the roster, the USA would have to prove that.

However if the argument that is actually being made is that injuries forced them out at the last minute, then yes, it should not count because they were not in San Diego. However...the Williams still need to play either the World Group Playoffs or Fed Cup this time next year to qualify even if that counts, because you need to play twice in a 4 year period and 1 of those times must be either the year of or the year before the Olympics.

    http://www.onthebaseline.com/2010/09/16/williams-sisters-fed-cup-commitment-under-scrutiny/

that link goes to an article written last year before the final where it explains all the rules about Olympic selection. The US would have to prove that the Williams officially signed up and were on the roster. Or the Williams could just go through the motions in the only 2 available chances left so they are officially allowed to be qualified for the Olympics.
