    Hi,

OK.. April 2nd. Fed has 492 points and has one major under his belt. If he takes off the rest of the season, does he still make it to the top 8 in China?

I say yes... That is like having a payoff spot locked-up. (In NBA) before New Years?

    Regards,
    Steve

You get a spot for winning any Grand Slam event. If you win a Grand Slam event but don't finish in the top 8, then you get the 8th-ranked player's spot.

excepted if you're out of the top 20,
OR if there is a guy [in the same situation than you] AND [ranked in front of you]...
cf 2002 : albert costa was directly qualified but not thomas johansson...
(by the way, how is his eye ?)

roger wins his matches in the locker room anyway. doesn't really need to play. the depth of mens tennis is questionable, at least among the top 15, contrary to popular belief. even agassi maintained a top 10 ranking while missing the majority of the year.

    Hi,

Was 492 points enough to make 8th place last year? I think it was right around 500.. anyone recall?

    Yes, he has.
With the AO under his belt, he can rest the rest of the year, and he still will be inside the Top20, so yes, he has secured himself a spot in the Masters Cup.

    Hi,

Part of what you say to true regarding this "rep". Most players must feel a "good showing" is a victory vs Fed. Having sat courtside for a Fed match or two.. I can say IMHO.. no one I have ever seen on TV or in person has the skill he is blessed with. He has about 5 gears and A-G games to take on the court with him. Sorry Pete..he was a great champion.. but only had one game... (which was excellent) Big Serve and FH.

    Regards,
    Steve

if you win a GS but are not in the top 8, you may not be in the masters cup,
unless you are in the top 20 in the world

I think thats rite, pretty sure i read it someplace else

This is because Fed and Nadal won 11 titles each and 3 GS between them, taking up a huge chunk of the available ranking points. This means that the other top 10-20 players could maintain their rankings with fewer points than before, because it was harder to get those points.
