We all know that if Federer finishes 2009 ranked number one, he will become only the second male player in history (with Ivan Lendl) to finish a year ranked number one after losing his number one ranking.

But, did you know that even if he finishes 2009 ranked number two, he will become the first male player in history to finish in the top two for seven consecutive years. The man and his records. Unbelievable.

To the guy above: not yet.

Nadal has to finish in Top 2 for 2 more years. Maybe, but it's not guaranteed.

Unless Nadal wins Paris and London, too lazy to do the math, in which case Nadal would retake the #1 position.

    Nope.

Currently, Fed has about a 950 pts lead on Rafa. Rafa winning Paris would bring that down to 300 going into London

it's not guaranteed, but very likely.

Hopefully Djoker will take him out tomorrow and end this matter.

Nadal will break none of his records.

All he can break are bones and tendons.

If Nadal wins Paris, he only has to go one round further than Fed to reach No.1.

It still wouldn't end the matter.

He could still end as #1, then, if Fed only wins 1 round robin match (guess how many he won last year?) and Nadal wins London (allowing only 1 match lost in round robin play).

If Fed somehow wins 2 round robin matches but doesn't advance to semifinals (highly unlikely scenario, but possible), then Nadal would have to win London undefeated.

If Fed doesn't win a match at all, an undefeated run to the finals would be good enough for the #1 spot for Rafa.

    So, it's a possibility.

Only if Nadal makes the finals of Paris.

Um....he does have some incredibly records....but these are examples of rather asinine ones that fanboy extremists make up and pay attention to. Sorry if that sounds harsh...but seriously, are you able to really see what you're saying?? He has much more significant and recognized records in acknowledged areas....we could spent endless time making up odd "records" and bantering them about....it's like mutual self-gratification for fans!

That would be an epic match if it happened. I really hope Nadal makes the final.

Let's not forget Davis cup has points too and Nadal will surely play in it. As far as I am concerned he will surely get it back this year.

Nadal, if he participates in Davis Cup, could stand to earn up to 150 points (every singles rubber win is awarded 75 points in the final).

It's possible that Nadal could be 145 points behind Federer (or even 5 points in some very unlikely scenarios) at the end of the season.

I think, in that case, he'd play the Davis Cup.

Can 150 points really change anything?

You just edited your post. What;s the scenario in which Rafa ends up 145 points behind Fed?

Well, if depends on how Nadal does in Paris, really.

It's possible that Nadal wins Paris and then goes on to win London beating Federer in the final, and he could still be in a 5 point deficit against Federer.

Nadal is currently 945 points behind Federer.

Assuming he loses against Djokovic in Paris, he could, theoretically, make the final of London and lose it while Federer only wins 1 round robin- and Nadal would be 145 points behind Fed.

Participation in the Davis Cup would greatly increase his chance to become #1. If he wins both singles rubbers, then, he would lead Federer by 5 points and end 2009 as #1.

And then a troll war of epic proportions will overtake TW causing the server to crash for weeks on end.

There are points for David Cup too so maybe since Rafa did not play in last year finals of the davis cup?
