I saw the last few games and the backhand winner in the last game mentioned in the report was just outrageous. After he hit it, Federer just turned around with a huge grin on his face and then the camera cut to Lopez and he was grinning too. Genius at work.

Fed has been S+V nearly all the time in his Doha matches - wonder if he'll keep doing it in Australia or he's just trying to finish Doha off without having to play too many long rallies.

Or maybe he's just practicing it in a match situation - he knows he'll win easily anyway, why not practice things he's not as comfortable doing? ("not as comfortable" in this case is only relative to his baseline game)

...whatever the reason, it's nice to hear! Suddenly I'm looking forward to the AO much more!

I think Federer is trying to copy his childhood hero, Sampras. Did you guys see him attempt the Sampras smash last year, totally shank it, and grin hugely? That was a dead giveaway! I think though that the pupil is going to surpass the master...

Yes, I saw that attempted smash...looked great, but didn't go in. Have you seen him hit that two-hander against Moya? It wasn't actually "in" a point, but once it ended he hit one just for fun. It looked pretty smooth and textbook, plus he added a legkick. Wonder if it went in...

Damn, missed that one - I would have loved to see Federer do a two-hander!
