All I know is David Ferrer would never have gotten to #5 in the world (or #4) in the years Federer dominated.

The top 4 is obviously stronger than when Federer dominated, but after that, Federer's domination era takes a giant dump on the present in terms of depth, especially in the Top 20.

And what the heck is veroniquem talking about with the "Davydenko wasn't good until the late 2000s?" Huh? The late 2000s are when Davydenko started falling off, with the exception of a short spell in late 09/early 10 where he returned to his 05-07 form.

05-07 were Davydenko's elite years. He was a much better player than Ferrer.

Exactly! Fed didn't have to play himself and he was playing Baby Nadal (and noone of Murray's caliber really)...

Federer was the one who set the bar in the first place, Djokovic is just his replacement.

Of course he wouldn't have been able to be ranked so high; he isn't great on faster hard courts, and they weren't an endangered species back then.

I don't know about the rest of the top 20 though, will have to actually find out who they were to figure that one out.

Anyway the question is whether competition is tougher where:

    a) the top 20 are all roughly as strong as each other but only one is GOAT material; or
    b) the top 4 are GOAT material

For your average top 20, a) would be tougher, but players like Federer and Nadal may find b) tougher, IMO.

Federer is still winning on grass at 31. I would argue comfortably that Roddick is the best grass player of the last 10 years besides Federer.

Difficult one. I think Djokovic had more difficulty in winning HC tournys than Fed, but the way Fed beat people even when they were peaking is scary.

Fed beat people when they were Rosol'ing. That is something Djoker doesn't do.

    Federer obviously.

Nadal, Davydenko, Blake & Ljubicic >>>> Nadal, Federer, Murray and Del Potro, it's not even close.

But luckily the greatest human being ever decided to play tennis and was able to overcome such legends of our sport.

There may be compelling ways to present the argument, but he definitely chose the most self-defeating.

So all of a sudden old man Federer is good competition? Then wouldn't 24-25 year old Federer be GOAT? Just saying...

I think Nadal has the toughest competition.
