How many people think that right now Federer is really only the 4th best player in the World behind Nadal, Murray, and Djokovic, regardless what the rankings say? His performance overall this year thus far, even taking into account the Australian Open where he did play better than Murray or Djokovic clearly, really makes him seem like a weaker player than all of that trio overall right now.

Not only is Federer no longer the best player in the world, he's not even the best player in the tiny country of Switzerland any longer. Yikes!

I would say he is number 3, still ahead of Djokovic.

According to the ATP race, yes, he is the 4th best player this year for now...

Yeah, of course Federer is No 4 in the world. Murray is the # 2 imo, and Djoko # 3.

4th best player atm yes, the atp race is the only legit and actual way to monitor how well players fare against each other so far in the year

until murray proves himself at the biggest stages - the grand slams - i will not hype him. yeah he lost to a white-hot verdasco this year but champions find ways to win. and given how he's owned fed recently, i think he shouldve won the USO in 08 but he's lacking the touch of greatness -- so far.

You guys are too quick to write Fed off. I'd still put him as 2nd best, but this would be my top 4:

    1. Safina
    2. Federer
    3. S. Williams
    4. Demetieva

possibly, but the hardcourt season should give him a turn around, and on grass i think he is still a tough competitor

disclaimer: don't call me a fed or nad ****. read my other posts before you past a summary judgment...

i think roger is still second best. I think week in week out the listings above are accurate. the thing is, he seems to keep peaking at the majors and making finals. last year was a tough year for him, and even after the mono, he has made every single final (4 in a row, winning one of them).

Roger was sucking it tournament in and tournament out in between the majors too last year, and w/o murray as consistent as he is now (he really only has been since that epic gasquet win in wimbledon), we were rating the djoker and nadal better that roger last year too.

i donno...i dont think ive ever seen him so negative since the aussie open final. i think this french open is the real test. I really think roger should still be the 2nd best clay courter. murray while improved is still visibly uncomfortable moving as compared to roger and rafa. djokovic is right there, but i don't think he quite has the confidence or the consistency required.

so it's all down to roger's mental state. if he wants, he can still be the no.2 clay courter...but let's see if he wants it.

when sampras stopped giving a damn about everything else

he was still good enough to win the slams

Roger could be out of the top 100 and still have enough to win a slam

when Rafa starts to slip he wont even win a game on clay

It is certain that after 15 years Rafa won't be winning the French any more.

Question is: will Fed win even a single tourney this year?

Fed is #3 right now (in my opinion) - Murray has to win a GS for me to consider him better than Fed.
