I don't know if I like this. He should be ok, but I hope he doesn't wear himself out. Other than that, he can pick up some more ranking points, but I doubt he'll go all out. Don't think he should really. I could see him playing/winning a couple matches and then losing.

I like it, Rog is ready to take the fight to the big dogs this clay season. Old man's still got some hutzpah.

Federer is looking for points, quickly climbing up the rankings. Soon to be a solid #3 in the world, very impressive at almost 33. His new racquet should be a huge help on clay, more pace and more spin.

Wow, I never expected this. Like President said, he must be going for points like mad. Expecting to skip tournaments after the kids are born maybe?

Yup that sounds more like it. Maybe he might end up skipping Rome/Madrid and considering he's defending 600 points at Rome, he needs to secure that No.4 ranking for Wimbledon!

I don't love it as I give him about a 0.1% chance to win the tournament... but like others have said.. makes sense to get some points before the baby comes and he has to miss a few.

Berdych had a chance to earn more points than Federer before Roland Garros and take the #4 ranking. Fed won't let that happen now, I guess.

That's the only thing that makes sense. Especially with him defending finalist points in Rome. He wants to secure a top 4 ranking for the slams with Berdych knocking on the door.

Well he could have picked up points at Madrid since he went out early last year.

But i doubt he is going all out as well. He will probably play 2 matches and lose in the QF. I doubt he wants to meet any of Djokovic/Nadal now so early

That sounds like he feels very healthy and confident otherwise he'd surely skip it. Interesting and unexpected development.
    Good luck Rog.

Lets go Federer, he needs to hold onto that #4 ranking. I think the old man can take it. He'll have a couple weeks off before Madrid anyway.

I think this is more of a case of his body feeling well, rather than a point chase. Fed doesn't seem like he'll put his body on the line for a few points.

Yep. It's all about the top 4 rank. He doesn't want to play Djokodal in a Q at slam. Smart.

The dues paid in December Dubai CampFed are paying dividends. He wouldn't do this for points unless he's firing on all cylinders physically and mentally. I think it's great...a little more prep for Madrid and beyond!

A Nadal-Fed SF is fine. Predictable SF's are ok. Predictable finals suck. In that case, it's probably better he lands on Nadal's side because he has a better chance to beat Djokovic than Nadal.

With Fed on Nadal's side of the draw, we are guaranteed a lopsided match.

With Fed on Djokovic's side of the draw, we are not. It's more likely we'll get two good matches in Fed vs Djoko and Nadal vs Djoko.

Wow, this is unexpected. Probably the worst court of the whole tour for him to face Nadal, but it shows that the GOAT has no fear.

I'm loving this! MC is probably my favorite masters tournament and I always hated the fact that Federer skipped it. Now we get to see the most beautiful player at the most beautiful location :D

Why are some people so negative? Saying he has no chance of winning... How does he have less chance of winning here than at any other clay M1000? Or do you want him to skip the entire clay season including RG? Jeez, what kind of an obsesssed fan would only want him to play tournaments where he's guarenteed to win?

Suddenly a light appears for Hafa in the finals.

    A bright light. :)

It's been a while since we've had a Fedal at MC.

Wonderful to see Fed playing. At the same time, hope he skips Rome and Canada this year to conserve himself.

He also has davis cup this year.

But that's my point. His chances to beat Djokovic are slim, but possible, in which case the final would be ruined in the high likelihood that he had to play Nadal. However, if Fed played Nadal in the SF he'd have virtually no chance which leads to a much higher likelihood of a Nadal-Djokovic final, although it is pretty likely no matter what side Federer ends up on.

The point is, I'd sacrifice a guaranteed lopsided SF for the preferred final rather than run the possible (albeit still pretty slim) risk of Federer beating Djokovic. Of course, I would prefer Federer won the tournament, but that is a VERY slim possibility. Looking at it from a perspective of a Djokovic-Nadal final though, Federer landing on Nadal's side makes that an even better possibility than the other option which is still pretty good.

In truth though, it wouldn't really bother me if he played Nadal and lost here. I've long gotten over the H2H thing. One more win for Nadal on his/any surface (besides maybe indoors) against a past his prime Federer doesn't mean a row of beans to me because each win that he gets doesn't inch him closer to Federer in the grand scheme of things. He needs GS to do that. The H2H could finish at 30-35 to 10 realistically, but if Federer finishes with more slams and more weeks at #1 he'll be the more accomplished/"better" player.

Just take the 2013 WTF, or even better the 2014 AO as an example. In 20 years the important point won't be that Nadal beat Federer, it will be that Nadal didn't win the title, particularly if he doesn't tie/surpass Federer's GS count. Hell, that's the important point now.

I just don't see the point. He's almost guaranteed a top 4 ranking at RG and especially Wimbledon where he'll get his points from 2 years ago added. And he has a lot of points to gain at Wimbledon, which should secure top 4 for USO.

Does he at least get his 4th seed?

Well lets see what happens. Federer lost every match to Djokovic at the Masters level since 2012. So even if he is in Djokovic's draw, Nadal has no reason to celebrate as Federer isn't winning. Federer has played this event 2 times in the last 5 years and was knocked out by Wawrinka and Melzer.

CRACKPOT: He's retiring after 2014 and wants to do a proper, yet unannounced, retirement tour.

In reality, Monte Carlo has become a spot where the top guys seem to experiment with new clay techniques. It's the ugly red headed step child of the other masters events.

Honestly I don't think he has much of a chance against Nole or Rafa, but it's still nice to see him play. Always a joy to watch Roger.
