What changed Federer from a top 10 player into the juggernaut of domination from 2004 onwards...was it because he played more from the baseline from 2004? or he just evolved as a player? I ask this as I'm watching Federer vs Philippoussis and he was serving volleying a lot.

He improved his fitness, his mentality and his baseline game to the point that he could stay at the baseline against the best ones.

did federer also serve and volley at all in wimbledon 04 or 05, or was his style completely changed in that short time?

how about at the uso in '03?

Footwork brought him into top 10 first before he even gets to the top spot.
The center of gravity got lowered compared to his rookie years.

The guy wasn't gifted like GOAT in terms of footwork.
He made conscious efforts and acquired beautiful and elegant footwork he has.

Then all the court surfaces got slowed between 2001 - 2004. And Federer
reduced S&V and won his 1st Wimbledon.

I would go with improved footwork and some stroke refinement along with a life altering event that changed and improved his mental outlook and fortitude.

He sorted his head out. Federer had all the talent, but the wrong mentality. In 2003, the winning mentality showed a lot of flashes, but it didn't come through fully until the 2003 Masters Cup in Houston, beating Agassi in the round robin match after being 1 point from losing. Once Federer sorted his head out, the pieces started coming together. When he had the right mentality and had banished his old demons, he was able to dominate the sport.

I also think that Peter Carter's death on the 1st August 2002 played a big part in his changed mentality.

    Pretty much this.

The game was already there, the footwork was there but Federer wasn't fully mature mentally.

In contrast, Hewitt was ready mentally from the beginning.

I think he saw roddick's jumping two handed back hand and visor at number 1, and new that he had to get him out of there. Unfortunate, roddick is a great player, and probably would still be great, but federer messed that up

At 4:37 he hits a backhand around the post, fitting it in the 2-3 feet between the post and the umpire's chair.

I had almost forgotten the days when I wouldn't hold my breath every time the ball went to his backhand side.

Yeah, that video says it all. That's the same guy who dominated in terms of shots...he just didn't play like those highlights consistently enough.

    Mirka!

She came to live w/ Fed in 2003.

An ambitious partner can do wonders to concentrate the mind . . . :)
