I know this looks like it could be an easy win for Federer, but can Brands play spoiler?
    We Know
. Federer is trying a new racket, can that affect him in any negative ways in his first match with it?
. Brands played Nadal very close in the first round of the French Open, can he play Federer the same way on clay?

Regardless of surface, Federer is better at handling heavy hitters than Nadal so I don't think Brands will be giving him the same headache he gave Nadal.

  4. Definitely, Tsonga, Berdych, Del Potro, those guys have all been beating Nadal lately, but never Federer.

    Definitely.

I'm so excited to watch this to see how he plays w/that 95. i wonder if its actually the hyper pro staff 6.0 95 paintjobbed to a blade... Also, it'll be funny if he has some of his 90s in his bag and when he gets frustrated will go and grab one of those, lol

Does anybody know what time the match starts in the USA? thanks

It's Federer in a 500 event, he probably won't play his first match until Saturday or something.

Either way I'm fairly sure he won't be playing til Wednesday at the earliest. Someone who can look it up will confirm I'm sure.

fed looks weird swinging a racket bigger than a 90, i guess 10+yrs of watching him use the same racket became the norm

It really does look weird :(
I'm not sure that he'll play better with a bigger frame, I guess we'll see in a day or two ...

If he uses Pro Staff 90, than Fed wins in 2. If he experiments with bigger frame, than the other guy (whoever he is) wins in two.

You should check the facts before making completely false claims. From 2011, Rafa is 2:0 against Tsonga. The last time Berdy beat Rafa was in 2006 and they have played 13 times since then with Berdy only able to take one set off Rafa in those 13 matches. Delpo has not beaten Rafa since 2009 and they have played 5 times since then.

Compare that with Roger who is 1:2 against Berdy, Delpo and Tsonga in his last 3 encounters with each of them from 2011.

I think the original post was sarcasm since tennisandmusic is a Nadal fan. And Fed lost to Stakhovsky as of late. Another big hitter. While Nadal lost to a more finesse player named Darcis.

Didn't get the drift. I'm still trying to work out who is who on TW.

I was going to vote in the poll but Federer is not in it and that's whom Brands is playing against. Not sure who the other guy is.

It's Federer who plays, but in the poll it says Nadal.

Could be an interesting match. Brands has been playing really well the last few weeks. Gave Nadal a pretty rough time at FO etc.

Yeah I don't know why Sampras was in the poll. The OP is confused.

  23. Yes, it was sarcasm and I am a Nadal fan. :)

I don't care if people don't like Nadal, but incorrect truisms around here bug the heck out of me. :)

It was pretty obvious that the post in question was sarcastic, and I have no idea who the poster is. You need to get your sarcasm detector fine tuned.

I don't think there'd be a poll option for Sampras to win. This is clay....

Your comment didn't make sense anyway considering that Federer is a greater player than Sampras.

There's another question for another day. Will Federer stop trying to return big serves on the baseline. Who even knows at this point.

You think Brands will get eight games? Even with the big serve i don't see it happening.

Agree with 1477 that Fed is better than Nadal on 'slow low clay' (read Hamburg) AND high-altitude clay (read Madrid, Gstaad).

    BUT

Brands also likes this stuff judging by how he did better while it was overcast,
until the sun came out and Nadal got the top-spin-motor rolling.

Its going to be a battle between maybe the greatest player to ever live and a player trying to make a name for himself on the tour. I like the more experienced one here, despite serve and altitude.

Sampras>Federer>Nadal. Sampras would own Fed at the US Open and Wimbledon. If Fed thought Stakhovsky was a tough Serve and volley player, he hasn't anything yet with prime Sampras serving bombs and Fed feeling helpless.

Thanks for the good laugh

Anyways, the G.O.A.T. will win this in 2, with one probably in a tie-break. It'll be exciting to see how the G.O.A.T. fares with the new racquet.

Funny that you mention prime Sampras when Stakhovsky only beat Federer in his worst year since 2002...Nevermind that baby Federer actually beat defending champion Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001. Sampras wouldn't 'own' Federer anywhere.

Like a 32-year old Federer is anything close to his prime/peak level. At the same age Sampras was already retired wanting to avoid further humiliation which he received at the hands of George freaking Bastl of all people.
