Federer - What is Left in 2013

What is left for him to achieve in 2013?

Win the ATP World Tour finals to extend his record there.

Finish the year with a winning percentage above 80% to have a winning percentage above 80% for 11 consecutive years. Only Connors had a longer streak.

I would like to see Federer make a push to finish the year in the top 4. It would be his 11th consecutive year in the top 4. Only Connors would have had more consecutive and total year end finishes in the top 4.

Win another singles title to break his tie with McEnroe for 3rd most all time.

At least reach the final at Basel, tying the record for most finals appearances (10) at one tournament.

Win 14 more singles matches to overtake Guillermo Vilas for 3rd most wins.

I don't think he does any of those, quite frankly. He's done, and I hate to say it, but it's true. He may fall out of the top 20 soon.

Is finishing in the top 4 likely ? What does he have to do for that ?

He has a final to defend at WTF and he doesn't look like he will.

He doesn't have a record at the wtf since Lendl and Sampras won more 'real' best of 5 set wtfs.

He is about 1900 points behind Ferrer in the race right now, but Ferrer has a good chance to make the USO semi at least which would put him closer to 2200 ahead.
Fed would probably have to go through Shanghai, Basel and WTF undefeated (maybe play Paris too) and hope Ferrer has a bad end of year run.

This is not the question posed, but because Federer had such a bad year in 2013, doesn't it him up for a good points year in 2014 (assuming he finds a little better form)? After AO '14, he really doesn't have many points to defend, right? Therefore, theoretically, he could have a pretty good points year next year which could help him rise up the rankings.

2013 is 2013, and 2014 is 2014. Your theory would suggest the lower you are at the end of one year, the more chance you have of being successful the next year. It's flawed.

In my opinion, being out of the top 8 at the AO would be disastrous for Federer because he may well end up playing one of the top 3 before QF stage. With present form he's not good enough to come close to beating any of them as well as half of the rest of the top 10.

We are witnessing Federer's decline and I hope that he manages it properly as most of us would not want to see such an amazing career tarnished in the last few months.

Particularly given seedings. You want to be as highly to get a favorable draw and thus have better chances at going deep in each tournament. I don't doubt Federer can still beat any player on the tour, but having to beat several such as Murray, Djokovic and Nadal back to back simply won't happen, and thats were being seeded low leave you.

Presumably, given how fresh he should still be, he'll play Shanghai and Paris this year. The indoor season should be his best time of the year anyway, so I'd expect at least some increase in form in the lead up to Christmas.

Talks of retirement and dropping out of the top 20 are probably premature. I would expect him to have a much better 2014, even if a GS is unlikely.

I will boldly predict he'll be ranked 4th by the end of 2014. I think Ferrer will fade soon and I still don't see any other major forces coming through. The likes of Dimitrov, Janowicz, and Tomic are all red herrings.

I guess so but it really depends on how Delpo and birdman play for the rest of the season

Del Potro is unfortunately looking at bit worse for ware. Even if they both outpreform him Gasquet is next inline I think? I think Federer will be fine, especially with Tsonga out.

I have come to terms with the fact that he may fall out of the top 4.

Federer already has the record for most year ends in the top 2, most consecutive years in the top 2 (don't see this ever being broken).

He is second for most year ends in the top 3 and top 4 and could never imagine him tying Connors, much less, passing him.

I would like to at least see him finish in the top 5 so he has the second most year ends in the top 5.

Again, Connors is King at this achievements.

People who say that Fed is done are naive.

Most will admit that this is atleast 90% mental....and as awful as that seems is better then this being 90% Physical.

This comes down to winning and confidence. I believe that Fed does need to make Physical improvements to his game, his conditioning etc., and I believe he will...he'll win matches and he'll get himself back to having more confidence. Once Fed gets that confidence back he'll roll through the First week guys again and be a contender at slams.

Just you wait, 2014 will be waaaaaay better then 2013

He needs to get back to work big time.
Actually dedicate the time to practice harder play smarter (trying to outhit robredo vs slicing and dicing him was insane)
And re arrange his mental sloppiness . Put all the pieces together and just go for it big time in 2014
If not prepared to do any of that retire at the end of this year.

I try to be a realist about his career at this point, but I too think he still has more to offer even if there are no more slam titles awaiting him.

My original point about 2013 points v. 2014 points assumes that he will pick his level back up next year to where he will win a few titles or at least make some finals here and there. Since 2013 has been a pitiful points year for him, if his level picks up, then so should the points and his ranking.

What really irks me is the sports journalists that have literally been writing him off since 2009. Garber from ESPN has written Federer's obituary many, many times over the past several seasons. He is always the first to hit the internet with a story about the latest death knell for Federer's career.

If there was any justice, all of those "journalists" would have to put disclaimers on their articles which say something like "hey, I've been proven wrong time and again regarding the junk I write -- for years even -- so you really shouldn't even read anything with my name attached to it."
