... according to the analysis he has to win the AO and Nole has to lose before the semis.

    http://www.tennistonic.com/view_tennisnews?nid=1670

    Can't really see it.
1st because Federer has a really tough draw and winning this AO seems very tough for him.
2nd because Djokovic has a good draw and he should lose before the semifinal (???) probably either to Querrey or Berdych.
3rd can't see both conditions happening at the same time.

That said, if Federer gets to the semis, loses to Murray and then Murray beats Djokovic in the final he'd still catch up to Djokovic by 500-odd points.

Murray would be in contention for the #1 ranking if he actually pulled that off.

It didn't even occur to me that Fed could regain #1 in Melbourne. Stranger things have happened, that's for sure. The above scenario is definitely within the realms of possibility.

So if Federer or Murray win, Djokovic will (probably) be number 1 without holding any slams? Must be a while since that happened.

If Nole retained the #1 without winning the AO, the same people who criticize the wta ranking system will do the same to the atp.

Nole has made 7 finals out of the last 9 slams he played, so I think he deserves his ranking no matter what.

Don't think so - even though he will stand without a major, he's made three of four major finals plus he's won the WTF - (and has bagged five slams so far in his career). That's a whole lot more than any of the WTA girls, who were being criticized.

All that makes him a legit no. 1 - slam or no slam.

That said, there might be some voices given that either Fed or Murray probably would have two slams then (+ Olympics in Murrays case).

Let's say Murray beats Federer, and Djokavic wins the touranment.

How are things looking moving forward as regards to the top 3 guys... is Murray a threat to get to #2? Djoker doesn't have that much to defend.. actually less than Federer right?

But the point is he's doesn't have a slam in the past 12 months. It's a double standard if you criticize Safina/Jankovic/Wozniacki but not Nole.

See my post above with regards to what Nole still would have that the girls didn't - 3 RO's plus a WTF.

But as I also wrote, with either Murray or Fed sitting on two slams, that may not be enough to make it legit in some peoples minds.

First of all, he does have a slam in the last 12 months and even if he didn't defend AO, he would still have won 4 slams over the last 2 seasons (on top of his 7 finals). You see any ATP player who's done better? How does that compare to Caroline who has never won any slam? It doesn't.

Unfortunately slams from 2011 don't count towards the 2013 rankings.

So your point is moot. If either Federer or Murray wins the AO, they will have won 2 of the last 4 majors, and would be more deserving of the ranking than a man with 3 finals, no wins, and a WTF.

Ha ha good trolling. You forgot that Djoko also has 3 master titles and Murray 0. As for Fed, I don't see him winning this AO but keep dreaming. Of course if Djoko lost in early round, you would be right...

Let's keep in mind that this is a pretty unlikely scenario -
almost all of us expect Djoko to win it with Murray as the second favourite. So probably there's no reason for this debate.

haha. She forgetting the system is based on 12 months, not 24 months which Nadal demands the ATP to change.

If Fed won AO, then he would probably deserve #1. But that wouldn't make Djoko the equivalent of Woz, no matter how hard you try to twist it.

Depends, actually. Quite a few people here were talking about a Wozniacki-like scenario should Federer have gotten #1 back without a slam win in 2011 (which those of us who thought he would likely get it back said wouldn't happen, as he needed that Wimbledon win for things to fall his way). So if these people were able to sustain that line of trolling for a (then) 16-slam winner, they probably shouldn't be surprised should they get it back with interest about a measly 5-time winner... ;)

Every player is in the ranking he "deserves" or has earned. There are significant events other than Grand Slams in tennis..........

I don't think it matters....since Federer is defending 2000(Rotterdam,Dubai, and IW) points after Australian Open.

Federer winning Australia is good enough.....Djokovic losing early would be boring.

Rios was the last to be #1 without a slam I believe.

Fed getting #1 would be great, but I don't see Berdych beating Djoker and that's the only prayer for him losing prior to the final.
