Federer's backhand return of serve - What is it?

    It kind of a chop shot that imparts backspin. Whould it be considered a volley? eventhough it not taken in the air? It doesn't reall look or act like a true slice. Maybe it's just a "chop" shot?

    What is the proper name for it?

    Sorry if this has been answered before.

    i'd consider it more of a "punch", its short with a slightly open face, but frim wristed. Yes, "punch" fits, i think.

    Federer hits flat returns and slices from his backhand side. I haven't seen Federer hit many topspin returns except on weak second serves.
