So we have all seen the racquet master do his thing and some incredible shots. The question is what do you think is the one match that he has been his most flawless in, and you know what I'm talking about its when a player is in the zone and shooting winners from every part constantly. I have seen to many clips of Federer and cannot decide if he is just always in the zone or if he is never in the zone and is just that good that he need not be in said zone.

Against Roddick in the AO 2007, Fed could do absolutely no wrong. That is the best I've ever seen him play.

Runner up is the 04 US final against Hewitt.

    Some great choices so far.

I would say the best I have seen him play is when he beat Roddick in Wimbledon (2004).

Roddick was on fire, and Fed was abel to hold him off, and blast ungodly fh's all over the place.

Funny, I've always thought that Roddick makes everyone look better when he plays. :p

Not hating on Roddick, but his stellar track record against Fed-ex says otherwise.

2004 US Open final. He was moving like a ghost, looked like he was just strolling, but covering the whole court like it was nothing. Hitting shot hard. I remember Hewitt had break point, and Federer served 3 aces in all different parts of the box to deny the feisty Australian yet another chance to make in roads during the match.

SF Australian Open 2007. It wasn't that Roddick was playing badly, it was that he could do nothing to contend with the Swiss maestro seeking his 3rd Australian Open. The champion Federer was in sublime form on serve, forehand and backhand. In the second set, Federer performed a highlight reel in just one game to break Roddick's bamboozled serve. The break of serve featured the famous overhead to running backhand flick winner. A performance for the ages indeed.

Wimbledon 2003 semi-final against Roddick. Whilst he's been excellent in so many matches since, that one was the one that took my breath away.

  24. I remember watching that 07 Oz match vs. Roddick and realizing that Fed was outrunning the ball. It didn't matter where Roddick hit it or how hard, Fed was there with time to set up it seemed. It was boggling.

That said, I watched the 05 USO against Agassi recently (or was it 2004? The better match is the one where it was NOT continued the next day in the wind.) Anway, Agassi was a much tougher customer off the ground obviously, and the court was faster, and the velosity, variety of shot off Andre's balls was stunning. Making offensive shots seemingly out of position, seemingly behind the ball, seemingly late to it, off Andre's shots, and making winners. Crazy. Really effin crazy.

Can someone post up their vid of the Federer vs Hewitt match in '04? Break it into multiple parts and upload it onto mediafire, megaupload, or rapidshare would be fantastic! thanks.

Yeah, that's more impressive to me than beating Roddick or Hewitt, because Agassi was hitting the ball as well as I've ever seen anyone hit it. He ran out of gas in the 4th but I can't believe Federer won the 3rd set and shut Agassi out in the tiebreaker. After that match Agassi officially anointed Federer as the GOAT.

to me, his aus. open match against roddick was the best he ever played, but the wimby final last year was probably his best match.

The last set of the wimbledon final in 07 was Fed at his very best, but for a match the Hewitt one in 2004 was the best, he bagled him twice

    I second that.
The start of his match against Safin in the semifinals at TMC in Houston 2004 was also very impressive.

    2007 AO vs. Roddick

I loved that match also because Roddick just beat Fed in a tournament that didnt count and said he felt that he was closing in on Federer. That set the perfect atmosphere for the beating.

SF AO 2007 against Roddick. It wasn't just how well he played, he could do absolutely no wrong in any stat!

    7/7 on break points
    7/7 on challenges !!!!!

He played a great match against Safin then and overall it was some great tennis from both but there quite a few times Roger played significantly better tennis then that in my opinion.

    I actually agree with this.

Nothing shows your character more than when you're put to the test.

....and no, I don't dislike Federer.

He won me over in an instant when he lost match point and was willing to throw his whole body into the ball just to get the ball back, especially on Rebound Ace.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=fPICTxZRVpA

I felt the same way when Sampras lost to Forget in the '91 Davis Cup final. Not only losing the match, but losing the tie.

04 USO final was the cake, but in 07 QF against roddick was not too shabby either (2 really tight sets with super high level). also great turnaround earlier in the tournament against lopez (he was down a set, returning at 4-5 30-30. lopez absolutely crushes 2 forehands to opposite sides of the court and comes to net. fed glides over and hits a bh pass. couple of points later he breaks to win the set - game over - and cruised the next 2 sets something like 3 and 1).
