Was wondering what Federer's win/loss record in a season over the last 12 years has been when he loses the first set of a best of three set match.

2003 - 8-10
2004 - 4-2
2005 - 6-0
2006 - 6-1
2007 - 2-6
2008 - 4-7
2009 - 1-6
2010 - 3-7
2011 - 0-6
2012 - 8-7
2013 - 7-11
2014 - 5-2 (updated to include 2nd round of Basel)

Shows how hard he has fought to take matches to 3 sets last couple of years.

At his prime , he had 7 or 8 matches a year with 3 sets, last couple of years it has gone to 18.

Those stats show that he only rarely lost the first set in his prime, and even on the occasions he did, he usually won anyway. So much for "mental weakness".

I think Roger has regained some of the "toughness" and willingness to work hard for a win this season, and this is reflected in these numbers.

It's been great seeing him fight more these last 2 years. It's really why I find him more watchable than ever.

Yeah I agree, I loved watching Federer in his heyday for the level of play and the shotmaking. Before he had this confidence where he just expected to go out there and win. But watching him scrap and fight is quite endearing. Long may it continue. You can tell he loves playing the game.

It looks peak Federer was the best fighter. Till 2007. Then he became mentally weaker. Then last three years he has become more of a fighter again.

I suspect he was also a bit complacent about Masters titles in the past and for the sake of his legacy would like to add few more.

43 Masters 1,000 finals and counting...

This. Seeing him brush off everyone save Nadal, while looking like he was casually practicing just isn't my thing. I need to see the work! Now I can see it :) Nadal always laid it all out and made his effort easy to see.

In 2012 and 2013 there were plenty of matches where you could easily see Fed going down as soon as he lost either of the two first sets - it usually ended up with him losing the match, even in case he simply managed to win the first. It seems that he's managed to reverse this pattern in 2014. :)
