Feel Sorry For Federer

Anyone else feel sorry for Federer. The guy wins 3 Grand Slams in 2004 (an achievement that had only been achieved three times in the previous 35 years before then).
Then a great challenger, Nadal, emerges and defeats him to win his first French Open in 2005. Federer responds by winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
In 2006, Nadal wins one Grand Slam, and Federer wins three Grand Slams.
In 2007, Nadal wins one Grand Slam, and Federer wins three Grand Slams. Then, in 2008, Nadal wins two Grand Slams, and Federer wins only one Grand Slam.
In 2009, Nadal wins one Grand Slam, and Federer wins two Grand Slams.
In 2010, Federer wins one Grand Slam, and Nadal wins two Grand Slams. Now, after having four out of five better seasons than his rival, Federer at the age of almost 29 has to prove yet again that he is better than his rival. Understandably, maybe he is burned out from the battle for supremacy.

No one should feel sorry for this guy. I hope more bad luck to him personally. Same with Rafa. I hope players that are hungry for a slam get their chance.

There is no need to feel sorry for a guy who won 16 majors.

Only two. Federer directly has only denied Nadal two Grand Slams - 2006 Wimbledon Final and 2007 Wimbledon Final. Nadal has directly denied Federer five Grand Slams (more likely six).

you are probably right about this one but i still dont feel sorry. I would though if Federer only had like 6 slams and had the potential to win 14+.

I just visited ATP.com and they have an article there about how there is a great debate whether Federer or Nadal is the greatest. I'm becoming quite exacerbated by these claims. 16>8. If anything, they should be comparing Nadal with Agassi. It is pre-mature to ordain Nadal the greatest player. He's not even in the top three yet. I don't feel sorry for Fed. I am however annoyed for him.

They're just trying to hype up the current players.

It's just like when Federer had about 12 slams and people were already saying, "is he greater than Sampras?", despite the fact at that point, Sampras was still clearly greater.

That's what the media does, it's a hype machine.

I agree. Look at a guy like Connors, who had a few weapons and a few weaknesses. He scraped and clawed for his 8 majors. Connors was burned a few times early in his career, by veterans who used tactics that did not allow him to play his game. In the middle and late portion of his career, Connors became a veteran who was able to outhink and outwork his opponents. He was willing to try a new gameplan, change things up if plan A was not working. Connors never had the prettiest game, but it was the sum of his parts that made him great. He had heart, he had guts and he wanted to WIN!

I do not feel sorry for Federer, but I am confused by how stubborn he is. This guy has every shot in the book, moves better than any player i've ever seen and can play virtually any style of tennis. If there is any player in the history of tennis who should be unafraid to take risks in order to WIN, it is Roger Federer. The pressure is off. He is the GOAT. But, he has to make some changes in order to regain some of what he has lost. Federer needs to desperately fight to gain a measure of revenge against the players that have soundly beaten him. He is not going to outwork Nadal, so he better outhink him. Federer still has a chance to redeem himself. If he gives it everthing he has, regardless of the outcome, he will still be thought of as a fighting Champion.

I will never ever feel sorry for a guy who made $56,249,204 on court. I mean unless he or his family go through a tragedy or something like that...

16 slams , $50 Million + , a loving wife and kids.

There are about 2 billion people who struggle to put food on their plates. Yes, I feel very sorry for Federer.

That's one unnecessary piece of writing.

If anything that just goes to show how outstanding these last 7 years were for Federer, and how he has been the best player of his time. Can't figure how you can feel sorry for that kind of excellence.

This is the point. Federer's have nothing to worry about for next few generations.

If we feel sorry for federer, then what would he feel about us.

How can anyone feel sorry for him? He's done more than most can even dream of.

It is unrealistic to be surprised when he starts losing and losing him dominance. Nobody wins forever.

You want to feel bad for an elite player. Feel bad for Andy Roddick or Lleyton Hewitt. Both were seen as the next big guns in the game. They were the two youngest players to gain the no 1 rank, and both ended years no1. Both guys would have at least 4 slams a piece if Federer was less dominant

Fed feels so sorry for himself that he doesn't need anyone else to do it! He is the perfect definition of a self-indulgent egomaniac and of course his reputation of sore loser keeps growing. A few more interviews like the one he gave after his W loss to Berdych and it should become legendary. :)

Well one would have to understand how it feels to be really good at something to see his perspective. The common folk of course see such greats as arrogant.

If Nadal were 29, it might be that simple, but he's not. Considering Nadal is only 24 and has more slams and titles than Fed did at this age, and considering he owns Federer 14-7 head-to-head, it's more than appropriate to ask whether Nadal is the greater of the two players.

For all Rafa's achieved he's pnly halfway there though and Federer is still playing. It will take a helluva effort from Nadal to get there. I wouldn't bet on him doing it.

Of course that's how things go in the world of sports when you have two great legends going at it against each other. Federer has achieved it all, and Nadal has achieved so much success at just 24 years of age. Quite scarry.

Federer has himself to blame. In the last months he has played tentatively and been arrogant enough not to try and change up his style or get a coach or something. It's time for a second comeback.
