Her racquet looks like an n3, but is really an n5. The beam on the n5 is about 25mm and the beam on the n3 is 30mm. If you look at her racquet, it seems way too thin, especially on top. Plus the headshape has got more of a tear drop shape (ie n5) and not quite as round as the n3. Well, whatever it is....it has 18 mains drilled in, that's for sure. Then again, it does have powerholes, so I could be wrong.

If you look closely, the n3 and the n5 have the same sculpted head shape. And all of the nCodes with the "guitar pick" throat have thinning heads at the top.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Serena uses an n3 because if you look at the picture of the Wilson n5 Oversize, you will see that the throat of Serena's racquet is a lot longer and thinner than that of the N5.

I know what you're saying, but there are 2 reasons supporting my theory:

    1. Serena has always used an 110 sq. frame throughout her career. Switching to something 3 sq. inches bigger is a pretty big difference.

    2. This picture is misleading compared to Serena's n3. The beam looks way wider than the one she uses. [IMG]

Whatever it is, it's custom made because it has 18 mains, and not 16 mains like any stock Ncode "hammer" stick....

Well, everybody thought that Serena would never switch from her powerholes, but she did, right?

    I'll get a picture.

There look at the above picture. It is clear that the throat is a long thinner and longer than the N5 Oversize.

I mean, you might be right. But the only thing you can base your opinions on is that Serena wouldn't change from a 110 sq. in. headsize. Nobody knows that for sure.

And also, you're only looking at the picture to see if the frame width is the same. You're saying that if the N3 was her racquet, "it seems too thin, especially at the top". I am yet to find a picture where that statement is clear enough.

Why would she need to paintjob a racket that's currently being offered already anyway?

It is a new nCode, the n3. Venus uses the N4. It couldn't be the n4 because it doesn't have Triad technology.

I've already established that it's custom made. That's all. It's nothing you can buy in the stores.

I have watched all of serena's matches at the australian open and her racquet has powerholes. I believe she is still using the hammer 6.4 stretch oversize which also has 18x19 pattern as well as powerholes at 12 o'clock, 3 & 9 o'clock. I have seen the camera close ups and her racquet still has the powerholes at those locations. None of the ncode racquets have powerholes at all three locations, at least none of the ncodes that I know about. As far as the throat changing shape or the racquet being thicker or thinner than before-no. The way the racquet is painted can make it seem that way especially on camera or in photos. Even head size can look different depending on the angle. Look at some of Sharapova's photos. Sometimes her racquet looks larger in some photos than others but count the string pattern and you know she uses always the midplus!

    Nooo,

you said that it was a custom made n5, which could be very false. And the only thing as of right now that anybody knows is that it has a different string pattern. So it could be very similar to what you could by in stores.

String patterns make all the difference. Venus racquet is not that light either...Some of the stringers on here at pro events weighted Venus' racquet heavier than 11 ounces...definitely heavier than the one you can buy in stores. I can tell you're new at this.

^^^, I'm not interested in knowing what Venus' racquet weights.

I just have a hard time understanding how you seem to "know" everything about Venus and Serena's racquets. It's not like you personally talk to them. You talk like you're best friends with them.

If Serena's racquet is custom-made, she could easily say that she wants a 113 square inch head, and she could easily say that she wants a heavier racquet. You make stupid accusations.

For example, somebody earlier asked why they would change racquets. Your reply was something along the lines of, "Wilson wanted them to and paid them, and they wanted to change, and Venus didn't feel comfortable with her new racquet until this week....."

You wouldn't know for sure half the things that you say.

Why would Serena use a paintjob for a racquet that is currently being advertised?

Hey, as good and as popular the Williams sisters are, Wilson is their sponsor. They have a huge endorsement with them. They are 2 great marketing strategies. I bet if Venus and Serena didn't endorse the H4 and H6 paintjobs that they've used for about 2 years now, they would have not sold NOTHING NEAR as they sold thanks to them. Have I asked Venus about her racquets? The answer is YES! I asked her on a live chat she was doing before the French Open last year. I talked to her during a practice session at the 2002 Bausch and Lomb (Amelia Island). Plus I know alot about her and Serena's racquet specs, because I've talked to Professional stringers who string at Grandslams and other WTA events, as well as ATP tour events as well. How did I know that it took a while for Venus to get used to her new NCODE racquet? Easy, there were SEVERAL pictures of her switching back and forth from her NCODE to her old racquet (h4 paintjob). Even a day before her match, she was still practicing with her old ones and constantly switching out with her new ncode stick.

One more thing...I never said I was sure, but Serena COULD be using a paintjob of a current racquet for simple reasons....One being that THE N3 IS ALOT MORE EXPENSIVE than most racquets. Wilson will get more money in the long run marketing her using a more expensive frame. This also could be why although it may sound odd, but it could be a possibilty.... Serena has been playing with a light colored racquet paint scheme for years now, it's sort of become her trade-mark...so she could have requested a bright colored paint scheme.

Andy's right danniflava..... Serena very much has a Custom racket as well as Venus... There are only a handfull of Players that use a "Stock Racket" and if they do... it is Customed with lead tape, etc.

    I knew that before tennisflyboy,
but I don't know how he could assume that she uses something that might definitely not be true. Pictures can't tell the different between and n3 and n5.

You should know that she has always used and still uses the hammer 6.4 w/ powerholes at 3,12 & 9 o'clock positions.

it's all a paintjob to make the racquet shape look different. It's her old racquet.

I saw close up images of the racquet she used at this australian open and she still has powerholes at 3, 12 and 9 o'clock. That's the 6.4 hammer powerholes racquet repainted to look like an ncode just like it was painted to be a 6.3, a 6.2, and an H6. at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock she has 13 powerholes at each location and at 12 o'clock there are 12 powerholes. Try to find the images and you will see. There are plenty of photos on various internet sites and some you can enlarge- also 18x19 string pattern! That is the hammer 6.4 and I own 3 frames of my own. Believe me- I am certain.

It is nice to have finally acquired the same racquet that she has been using all these years but it would be even nicer to know how she customizes it. I am trying to find out how much lead tape she uses and how much the racquet weighs...not easy.

All it is a frame just like her old racquet but used one a ncode mold. BTW, I was looking at Venus' racquet, and hers looks similar to her 6.2 stretch. The beam width is identical, etc. It is also similar to her previous racquet. I know it's frustrating that we can NEVER have access to what the pros use (unless they personally give it to you or win a charity auction), but they have needs in their equipment and Wilson is very accomidating.

Okay, I'm starting to understand a little bit more, Andy. But I have one question. Could it be possible that the specs are the exact same (H6-n3), just with the frame of an nCode? I think that's a pretty easy thing to do. But if this correct, why wouldn't all pros just get "real" racquets with the same specs?

Like I said. Serena doesn't use an H6, she really uses or used the Wilson Hammer 6.4 Powerholes OS. It has 18 mains and 19 crosses as well as powerholes on both the top of the frame and at 3 and 9 o'clock. This process is really quite simple, especially if you're a huge corporation like Wilson. Basically they took all the components of her old racquet (stiffness, material it is made of, powerholes, headsize, length, gripsize, etc) and molded it into an Ncode "hammer" racquet. My guess the reason Serena endorses the n3 and not the n6 is because there is something similar like powerholes are on the n3 but only at the 3 and 9 positions....(but what else you don't see is that Serena's racquet has powerholes on the top hoop as well which DEFINITELY do not come stock on an n3). So in the end, Serena's racquet is basically the same, but with Ncode mold and cosmetics. I was mistaken with the n5 idea to begin with because I was thrown off with the beam width...then I noticed the powerholes and then it became obvious that her frame is from Wilson's Pro Room.

It does make sense. Serena still has powerholes at 12, 3 and 9 positions ala Hammer 6.4 Powerholes OS on her new ncode...

this post is now becoming dead and redundant....this will be my last post on this topic, it's getting really old.
