What do you eat to have enough energy to play long matches? And when do you eat it?

My theory is to just fill up on whatever (mainly proteins and carbs) 2 hours before I play.

Yah, mostly some good, whole grain carbs with a bit of protein a couple hours before. Maybe some fruit right before hand and a banana during the match if its intense enough.

You want protein and sugar in your system about 15 minutes before match time. Keep it down to a small portion, you don't want to play on a full stomach. I usually just stick to a protein bar, then a banana mid-match. I also bring along whole grain sandwiches, these REALLY work for me, in terms of giving me that "full" filling. Make sure you drink some water as well.
