She keeps going off about the Challenge system, and what's most annoying is that she keeps repeating herself, she needs to shut the hell up so we can all just watch the match peacefully.

jeez, alright already. yeah, she's repeating herself. but so are we. there's another bash mary carillo thread on this very same page.

let the woman whine. she's got good reason to. the challenge system is lame, like she keeps saying . . . and saying.

I am not a Carillo fan either. She is lame. I wish Johnny Mac is the commentator. :(

I like Mary, and I agree with her 100% about the challenge system. And someone has to counter Cliffy's over the top enthusiasm about it. He's been whining about implimenting hawk eye on every fricking broadcast or years now.

Let her feel good about it because it's what she's wanted for 2 years. I remember a time when TW members wanted SS/HE and now that it's actually there, I see the complaints already. At least Mary knows what she likes and is sticking to her beliefs.

i kinda wish there was unlimited challenging too, i really dont think teh players would absue it, but there were a buncha times where players were right and didn't challenge becasue they wanted to save their challenges for later in the match. it doesn't take long, just let them use it. if im right gilbert agrees with me.

The challenges are unlimited as long as you get them right. I think they should get 1 challenge per game as opposed to 2 per set with no carry over, but let them keep the 1 challenge as long as it's correct.

What she keeps saying about the challenge system is how the line judges are so good. Yet they only get 1/3 of the close calls correct (according to the statistics) and I personally don't think that that is a very good number. I think its a pretty horrible number actually.

She generally annoys me, but she was wayyyy outta control during today's matches -- and I assure you, it wasn't just about the HE stuff.

At one point during the third set tiebreak she was rattling on about how Ljubicic (or "Loobie"... wtfe Miami!) got out of Bosnia and I actually screamed out, "Shut the $#!^ up Mary Carillo!!!"

    I even surprised myself.

You've got your facts wrong Zorg. on CBS today they said the numbers for the tournament were:

    169 challenges.
    53 overturned calls.
    106 times call stood.

    That's 1/3 of the time the call got reversed. 53 = 1/3rd of 169.

Even still, if I have a 66% first serve percentage, it's not 'pretty good,' it's 'spotty.'

    AMEN BROTHA!:p

You know I hate the comentators

Why? Well I watched a broadcast out of Japan or something of a tennis match, you know what kept surprising me?

They only some times talked right before comercials after, switch overs, you know those aprpriate times to be speaking

And I also am tired of them saying the same thing over and over and over, Finally I just turned the volume off as they ruin the game.

I mean they are in the middle of ralleys and she will talk though the whole thing, or just pop in in the middle and say stuff.

And people wonder why things in tennis is going in the tubes?

Time for new blood my friends, they are working on politics and putting friends and family members in there in stead of those that are most qualified

When you do that with a business that lives on viewers it all goes down the toobs, same thing has happend with other sports.

    What other sports? Exactly!

Watching matches peacefully. YES! That's all we ask. Watch an old match, like McEnroe/Borg at Wimbledon. Commentators will only speak when they have a shrewd observation to make. Otherwise it's silence. None of this bickering and talking about totally unrelated subjects. There will be a great rally going and the commentators will be talking about something, "PMac, you're not going to be here next week?" "No Cliff, my wife is having a baby." "Ah, tending to more important things." "Exactly." "Well congratulations on that." "Thank you sir." "Brad, anything to report?" "Yes Cliff, the temperature has got to be 52 degrees out here. It's freezing cold. People are in blankets out here." "Don't get hypothermia, Brad." "I won't." "Good. Cover your ears." "Thanks for the advice Cliff."

    ahahhahahahh:mrgreen:

The sad part is that is not an exageration, it is like they want their own talk show so they try to be the center of attention.

    Tennis is dooming it's self:(

Somebody said tenis is dooming itself. Dooming itself? Maybe but, I think the commentary is being pushed into a direction that satisfies most Americans and young people all over the world.
They know the tennis purist will not enjoy the cute, BS commentary, but the purists are going to tune in for the sake of the tennis anyway...so why please the purist? No incentive! Let tennis be tennis, sure! But why preach to the choir? Why not expand the base and make a buck or two?

I can see why they are trying to make things more fun for the casual observer. The dilettante. The person who is going to spend time and money on some other sport if not tennis. So they promote tennis with the info-tainment ethos. But it backfires. IT comes off dorky.

I'm for the understated, simple Japanese and the old school BBC approach. Even the 1970's PBS approach with old Bud Collins from the Globe! But I do see why they are trying to sex things up for the pop kids.
All we can hope for is a wider bandwidth and more coverage options for this great sport. More coverage, please.

The purists spend a buck or two, too.... on equipment, financial services, luxury automobiles, Bulova watches and whatever else Madison Avenue wants to shove down our throats.

I fully understand your points, and they are valid for a first time viewer at best.

I have heard from people many times that are either new viewers or those that are forced to watch due to a spouse ect complain or make comments that they dont' understand why the don't shut up.

Could you imagine in a golf tournament, Tiger is about to tee off and the anoucers start talking out loud about their bab?

Them talking like that is fine for a first time viewer but anyone that watches tennis with any kind of consistancy or are interested in watch always complain about them talking too much, them going off in tangents, talking too loud, talking at extremely inapropriate times.

jackson vile, we basically agree. I sorta made like three conflicting, rambling points there. I was just thinking aloud, trying to figure out if we are crazy or if the programming directors are listening to Madison Avenue.....or maybe they don't know much about tennis and they get totally baked before staff meetings.

Interesting comment about the first time viewers you know.
ANyway, man. Maybe some tennis-head from this forum can get an internship in Bristol...make a difference in tennis coverage...end up doing a GREAT job next to Rafter or Agassi on the air one day. That would be nice.

Love your signature, by the way. Sweet how proud of your wife's tennis you are. Just don't let the Spelling Police see that last line, though.

I love Mary. She usually has something constructive to say, and if you don't like the commentary, there's the mute button. Works on most TV's.
