For all the talk about WTA girls just blasting flat balls, whom in particular actually hits so flat? I look at the top of the ranks and most of them put quite a bit of loop on their shots. I'll probably put together a poll, but need some consensus.

My list comes up with these girls so far:
    Dementieva
    Venus
    Azarenka
    Bartoli

I consider Davenport retired. No way she's coming back after being pregnant again.

although bartoli can get some great angles on her shots, i don't think she hits with that much spin. it's inherently harder to create topspin with 2 hands on the racket, because the player cannot whip the racket through with as much headspeed.

same with venus, both of the williams sisters seem to like driving the 2 handed backhand a lot. venus's forehand seems to have good top, though.

even nadal, who has a lot of topspin on the forehand, tends to flatten out his backhand and drive it hard. personally, i hit with more top on the 1HBH than the 2HBH.

i suppose it's hard to think about loopy shots in the WTA when we see the men of the ATP rip forehands with ridiculous amounts of topspin. maybe the girls are trying just as hard to spin, but they just don't have as much strength to do it like the guys.

Please have a look at David Nalbandian's 2 handed backhand. There's as much spin as he wants, and he generates insane angles with it. The Paris 07 match with Federer in particular is worth perusal.

OP your asking wrong question. Better question is who hits with a decent amount of spin on the WTA?

Of course when people comment on flat they dont mean 100% flat with no spin. All players put some spin on the ball to keep it in play but generally speaking they arent hitting shots with good spin on them.

None of them are flat, if you know what I mean, though all of them are good hitters.

You don't really see much for surface specialists on WTA. You might see women allergic to certain surfaces (i.e. Venus with clay, Safina with grass) but most of the events they play are conducive for flat/low-trajectory spin. Clay season isn't so long and drawn out on the WTA.

Despite that, I can only find a few ladies that actually hit really flat or low-trajectory. Most of the girls either hit a lot or moderate amounts of spin and clearance on the forehand. As for backhand, quite a few hit relatively flat.

Almost all of them hit very flat with only marginal topspin, mostly powerful drive shots. That is the WTA is so 1-dimensional and boring now. We need more Schnyder like racquet artists hopefully with more hunger and desire than Schnyder ever had, or some Navratilova or Novotna like net rushers, or some Hingis like point constructers. This would nicely balance out all the power sluggers who are right now mostly inferior, more error prone, less athletic and less mobile, and far mentally weaker clones of the Williams (even past their peaks).

She hits about the loopiest FH Ive ever seen...she's like the Donald Young of the WTA. Except she wins matches occasionally.

The same answer I gave on the other thread about flat hitters:

    Kimiko Date-Krumm.
She was known as a flat hitter during the 1990s. Even after her return to tour last year, she's still hitting with the basically same technique, only using the modern racket.

Amazing Schnyder gets so much loop from an 18x20 racquet. Imagine her with a 16x19 or even a POG....

Yeah her swing is like a dutch windmill. She could get insane topspin with anything!

Amazing that no one has mentioned Sharapova yet. Or Dokic. There are dozens, but those are pretty high profile to have left out.
