Call it a gut feeling, but within the next three years, I think le Fog will get Roland Garros

I'd say he's the 3-5th best clay courter behind Novak and Nadal atm with maybe Fed and DelPo in front or between him.

    Anyone else agree?

Well, if Gaston Gaudio could do it....who knows?

(Although I suspect Rafa and Novak would still have to be out of the running).

Wat? Where is Ferrer? He completely owns Fognini on clay (and every other surface I guess).

Ferrer, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Berdych, Del Potro, Wawrinka, Tsonga, Gasquet, and probably even Murray are better than him on clay.

He made the Monte Carlo semis last year along with winning Hamburg and Stuttgart, taking out both Gasquet and T-Bird.

But as I said, gut feeling ;)

But when he actually tries, the man can pull off some great shots consistently.

Fognini is good on clay, no doubt. Good enough to win the FO? Not a chance in hell. Lets leave out the fact he would get destroyed by Nadal/Djokovic and assume he has a run to the final and plays only 1 big member of the top 10 (lets say Murray)

Murray would fustrate him, he would have a mental break down and smash raquets/ moan at the umpire/ get booed by the crowd / get more fustrated and eventually implode.

No. Not because he's not a good clay courter but because he's got no fight in him when his opponent is playing better than him. Can't see him winning 7 Best of Five matches in a row for a Slam title.

    Wanted to post something similar.

I'll just add that he can also lose to anyone on a given day when he's not in the mood (which happens pretty often).

A 36-year old Federer is more likely to win the FO in 2017 than Fognini.

Some Fognini when he's on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYhgnStv0tg

That should be the match vs Gasquet haha

But damn, bloke was ripping winners left and right, great at the net and the depth he was getting some of those strokes were amazing

Kinda what made me take notice, of course his mentality is trash, but maybe it'll improve

I think he is one of those players crying out for a coach who can help him with the mental side, if he finds that he has limitless potential.

Fabio is a very good clay court player, but his inconsistency won't let him win anything big anytime soon !

A fine player, but I can only see him getting to the Quarterfinals, maybe the Semifinals if the draw works out for him as THESEXPISTOL stated.

If he got to the final I would love to see him troll his opponent into submission like he did to Montanes at RG a couple of years ago.

Only if a whole lot of ATP players go on strike, come up with evil food poisoning in Paris,...

Having said that, good job by him to improve and get into the top 15.

Fabio is super talented. Lots of potential...but he's almost as gutless as Tomic. If he can fix that then maybe who knows. Once Djokovic and Nadal decline who else is there really.

He'll probably make a few quarters at the French and pick up a selection of 250 level events

LOL Seth. That was a good one.
During last year's FO i was playing a regional event on the middle saturday and Fognini was playing Nadal. One of the girls was saying Fognini could stand a chance against Nadal (that couldn't possible happen in a 5setter at Nadal's backyard). I promised to everyone there that i would throw myself from the balcony where we were if that happened. I would gladly do so.
Needless to say i that i ended the day without single scratch...

Or I hope he does at any rate

Beating Nadal at FO is hard enough. He'd have to also deal with Djokovic. I doubt it.

If you remove Nadal and DJokovic he has a decent chance to do it. Before the Nadal there were manny guys who played at least a final there.

Yeah if we named every player who had thrashed Murray on the dirt as French Open contenders there would be a very long list.

Impressing way to win it today because Muzz gave us the feeling that he's back on track in Miami.

    Doesn't Dolgo own Fabio?

Nadal, Ferrer, Dolgopolov and Djokovic would be huge favourite against Fognini on clay.

Murray was playing quite well today and Fognini just crushed him. He'd push Nadal and Djokovic on clay on todays form (doesn't mean he'd win), he chased everything down and was pulling winners out of the sky.

He's starting to grow up and he's got top ten potential....nobody takes him seriously, I doubt he takes himself seriously until recently.

Thankfully there's someone who can carry the can for Italian Mens tennis...it's been years since Italy had a legit talent who isn't a one trick pony like Volandri....you can't play on a reputation of "I beat Federer in Rome in 2007" then do nothing.

    I'm on Wynter's side!!!

Fognini gave Nadal a good match at last year's French Open. Nadal won 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

I think that was a long time ago. Considering he spent 2 years in Spain as a teenager practicing on clay, it remains an eternal enigma why it became his worst surface!

On the other hand, the headlines would surely point out that he was the first Italian to win RG since Panatta back in 1976!

Clay is the best surface to practice on when growing up, even if clay turns out to be your worst surface.
