Fognini has had his 'Verdasco AO'09' moment beating Murray on his weakest surface. Let's see if he goes on to win anything else meaningful. Doubt it.

Considering how well he has just shown he can play on clay, there will be little excuse for him if he fails to replicate that form when competing at the big clay events this year!

  3. Great thread op, good to see someone make a brave prediction.

Regarding Fognini, I think he has a shot. We are currently in a top heavy era which means we don't go into slams talking about 10 contenders but still he has to be considered a legitimate threat.

His tennis is a joy to watch so I would love it if he wins.

You could definitely make a case for him being 3rd favourite for the French with delpo out although maybe I am not showing enough respect to Fed and Ferrer.

Fognini has such a beautiful clay game, too bad he can be, more often than not, a head case when it matters.

Last year he pushed Nadal at the French Open and was actually serving to take the first set, but got broken. Then, he had a chance to equal the score in second set, but missed an easy volley. Overall, very good performance.

And today's match against Murray was phenomenal. He just have to improve mentally...

his recent clay record looks rather good... the upcoming clay season would be a good time to improve his 4-29 record against top10 players.

Best 5 Clay courters in the world are:
    1. Rafa
    2. Novak
    3.Federer
    4.Ferrer
    5. Fognini

The top 4 remian the same for chance of winning the french but fognini must drop to like 10 or so. Hes not the kinda guy that has. 21-35 sets of mental grit in him.

Id have Wawrinka, Robredo, Murray, Tsonga, Gasquet maybe even dimitrov ahead of him for chance of winning

    Murray's stats by surf:

    Gr 73-14 83.91%
    Ha 304-87 77.75%
    Cl 55-34 61.80%

Yeah, he probably liked his time in ESP as a teen - warm and sunny compared with Scotland/England. But as far as what surfaces his game translates to the best and most importantly which majors he has the best shot at, clay and RG are way down. Making a statement about his commitment to the spring clay season is just tennis' version of pc-speak.

All thought I'm Italian I don't see it happening. He is powerful, talented, great technique but he does not have the will to fight that much....he needs some of what Nadal has, mental strength, focus, fighting spirit. However, today vs Murray and the two recent tournaments won show that he could make it to the Quarter final

Well you have these kind of stats for a reason.
    1. On grass there are only two events for a short time span which helps him to maintain a good%.
    2. On clay he never plays small events >>> he never wins a title to gain some confidence (like Brisbane or London for example) and he only plays the four/five bigest events with the most dominant player on one single surface in the history of tennis + another guy who actualy is very close to overtake the first one (Djokovic). I always fint it hard to believe that with his game Murray has such a mediocre record on clay but with the upper mentioned two I think that Andy has accepted that he would not have a breakthrough on the red dirth and because of this he let himself to be out of shape for the spring. I remember in 2012 that he gave a good fight to Nadal at MC and Paris, he just needs to be more concistent.

A friend of mine conducted a university study on gut feelings. A study of 250 subjects (tested on 10 gut feelings each, directed at a choice of 4 scenarios) showed only 12% of gut feelings were correct. Also, Nadal beat Fognini 6-2 6-2 at Miami this year.

Miami is Hard-Court... FO is Clay ;)

And Fog was quite competitive vs Rafa last year, should've got the first tie break and missed an easy volley to level the match in the second set.

Of course, he didn't but he can play very well when he wants to.

Yesterday was impressive but it was at home, on very slooooow red clay, one of only 3 (1 was dubs) best-of-five matches and vs the weakest of the Big 4 on the rebound from back surgery. Add all of that together and I still say "no" to an RG title.

His '11 run at RG before he pulled a WD from the QFs vs Djok...Istomin, Robert, GGL (only seed at #30) and Montanes was fairly easy yet the R16 11-9 in the 5th win vs Montanes so crippled him doctors advised the WD. You need more in your tank to win all seven matches @RG.

    Fognini?

Hmm, if Djokovic and Nadal slow down/lose form and Fognini gets his mentality issue in check, then he has a shot.

Fognini certainly has great skills, and he could beat players like Tsonga/Berd/Gassquet/Delpo/Murray on clay if he gets his attitude right. Ferrer would probably have to retire first too actually.

Fognini is a natural clay court player. He has all the right shots and movement for clay. Much better than on hardcourts. With that said, it will be tough to get past Djokovic and Nadal. But I think he might be their biggest threat.

No, because Djokovic is incapable of winning Roland Garros. At the slams, his mind, is gone. He can have that long non-slam winning streak at the end of 2013, and a long non-slam winning streak this year. But he hasn't won a slam since January 2013. So Djokovic can win Monte Carlo or whatever, but he has no chance at Roland Garros. He can make it close, but he can't win it. Doesn't have it upstairs.

Roland Garros has higher bounce than the other clay events. So, its a specialist slam. Not a clay specialist slam. A Roland Garros specialist slam. Even when Nadal was in awful form last year at Roland Garros, he still beat Fognini in straight sets.

Djokovic has a couple more years than Nadal. Once Djokovic is ineffective on clay, than who knows. But Fognini will likely not be effective anymore as well when that happens. French Open is up for grabs in 2018. lol

it looks that way but djokovic's best time on clay is behind him......he made his first semifinal seven years ago and had a couple of chances to win the title.......they are all gone......from now on there will be young players single handers in particular like dimitrov who will be ready to give him plenty of headaches......

federer too blew his best chances in 2002 and 2003 but he was lucky enough to find just one roland garros without nadal......not sure djokovic is as lucky as luckerer......

Djokovic has a couple more years of what? Choking at slams and going on long winning streaks at non-slam events? Djokovic can keep that crap, while Nadal takes a couple of slams each year. Nadal is currently the defending champion of TWO slams. Djokovic, has nothing.

I think a finalist is realistic. Saw Fog play at Cincy in 2012 and immediately found him compelling. His talent doesn't shine through on tv. He has effortless power and shotmaking ability, combined with the worst patience and mental game I've ever seen. Again tv doesn't show how bad his attitude can be, he must have tossed his racquet ten times and had fits during hange overs, etc. they edit much of his live bad behavior out for tv.

As for the Miami match with Nadal I saw that in person also and Fog wasn't trying for whatever reason. It literally looked like he only started playing 3 games in and then only for patches so as to not get bageled. I would say that the crowd deserved their money back but at least it wasn't the semi's no show.

If he could get his head together Fog is pretty amazing. He can turn any point into being played on his terms in my opinion. So while I don't think a FO win is in the cards, a finals appearance could be.

Him getting routined by Ferrer pretty much makes me believe that he is not a contender for the title. Ferrer isn't even looking that sharp this year, but he got it done so easily over fog.

Mmmm no, he lost to Robredo last year and this year he lost to Ferrer and Dolgopolov so 3 losses since the French.

Quick question, is it worted to start answering some stupid posts of some people who would never ever admit that they are wrong no mather the facts?

Hey guys, sorry to say but even a guy like Tsonga is better on clay than Fognini.

and until Fognini reaches the quarter or the SF of the french player, it will stay this way. Tsonga > Fognini on clay.

He definitely has the talent and the game but, unfortunately, he's the most ill-disciplined, inconsistent and clownish player I have ever come across!

Unless he undergoes a total brain transformation, I cannot for the life of me see him staying disciplined and focussed enough to win 7 tough matches in a row against some of the toughest competitors in the world!

    Be honest now....can you??
